Around Hollywood Las Vegas (U.FO Wall Street worries about recession, but the world's most' fabulous gambling - . resort boomed ahead today with plans for two more multi-million dol lar hotels. ' .Though trade may be off around the country, this land of cactus and dice isn't eWawKosle., worried that any minor depression will slow down the slot machines and roulette wheels. Business here is two and one- half times over last year, when 7.000,000 visitors spent $122,- 000,000 in the town. Now two more gambling edi fices have been licensed, the; $2,500,000 Sunrise and tha $3,- SC0.000 Casablanca, each with the inevitable swimming pool, lavish caaino,. rooms, bars res taurants and suqper clubs for big-name floor shows. Skyscrapers ; The Casablanca will tower eight or ten stories, the first tall hostelry in town. Both ho tels will be built on the "strip,' stretch of county wasteland on the highway outside the town. This desert land, useless for anything but gambling, al ready has been bought up for 40 miles out of Las Vegas, all tha way to the "California line. Tha asking price is from $1000 to $1290 a front foot TwoHnillion-dollar shopping centers of smart stores will be sandwiched among the sprawl ing hotels and 24-hour-a-day wedding chapels. Even the existing seven hotels on the neon-crazy strip are ex panding. The Flamingo is put ting up a new million dollars front with a huge lighted silo- shaped structure to light up the desert. The El Rancho Vegas, Last Frontier, Desert Inn, Thun- derbird and Sands talked about new rooms. The Sahara, claims its expansion to more than 200 rooms will make it the largest note! in town. Some Los Angeles sources pre dict a recession would leave Las Vegas the most expensive ghosi town in history. But you don't bear one pessimistic comment bare. - Sands casino boss Ed Levinson points out not even Monte Carlo, Mew York or Miami Beach can offer what Las Vegas has RESTORE BEAUTY TOJOUI FLOOU WITH A RENTED SANDER Easy to Oparare Cleaa ami Ohesties Low taatal Rate icms 1 QQiaftfrjttffibi by AUNE MOSIY swank but inexpensive rooms, swimming, gambing in plushy casinos where you get free liq uor and cigarettes, and free en tertainment by big-name stars. Even opera singers like Lauritz Melchlor and movie queens such as Shelley Winters and Marlene Dietrich are flocking to per form for big money at the ho tel. , - yAs one nightclub entertainer says, "there's more show busi ness here than in New York or Hollywood." "TWA has started 'direct flights from Vegas to San Fran cisco and Chicago and this year we're also getting the New York and eastern business that used to go to Miami Beach," beams Levinson. ' And an executive at the Sa hara sighs, "Recession? Our big gest headache is not annoying the people we have to turn down.- If you don't know some body at the hotel or have con nections,: you can't even get a reservation. We've been sold out for New Year's for months. "And we already have 40 room reservations for Donald O'Con nor's .opening January 5!" Unionists Shy Away From Cabinet Post Denver (U.R) CIO President Walter Reuther says no union man wants to succeed Martin Durkln as secretary of labor un til there is "a clear understand ing' 'about the Eisenhower ad ministration's labor policy. Reuther arrived here by plane last night to address the 23rd an nual convention of the CIO Oil Workers International Union this afternoon.' The labor leader told report ers that "Durkin had no choice. He couldn't do anything but re sign. ' - . "No labor person would want to serve in that position unless there was a clear understanding on the administration's policy," he said. Oregon Youth Dies In Hotel Room Fall .
