Hardtop Auto Races Here Today; Point Race Close Hardtop racing starts its Sun day afternoon shows at the Jacx son County Speedway in Med ford this afternoon. With the end of the current season drawing to a close, point leaders will be hard pressed to keep their top positions. Bemie Miller in M6 will have to keep his speedy mount in the front row all afternoon if he is to hang onto his number one spot. Cecil James, M9, is only seven points behind and Jack McCoy is right behind Cecil so there will be plenty of hard, fast driv ing this afternoon. Barreling Bobby Wilcox says he isn't sat isfied with fourth place but in tends to climb on up and Elmer Sisemore figures that he belongs t the top, too. There's only one number one position and the track may be a little crowded if everyone tries to get in that spot. Honorary President Bud Beachwood is expected to com pete for the first time on the Jackson County speedway today, and will no doubt be a formida ble contender. Bud has been watching the boys in Yakima, Wash., do their stuff on a mile and an eighth track and has some ideas about speed on this one. Speed, spills and thrills will be on the program this after noon at the speedway located at the Posse grounds and there mayl be some new track records when the sun finally goes down on the Rogue valley. Klamath Has Good Backs Klamath Falls Good backs, Inexperience in the line and green . reserves is the general picture of Klamath union high school football this fall. Backfield lettermen are Quar terback Larry Yarnell, a good passer who moves well from the T-formation spot; Jim Dougherty, hard running half back and full back; Greg Schulze, a fullback and also a hard runner, and Jim Bevans, a dipsy doodle boy. Another halfback is Don Dex ter, a scatback up from the jun ior varsity. Only line letterman on hand is Ben Lawver, huge tackle, weighing 276 pounds. Guy Mun sell, a letterman end, is out possibly for the season with a shoulder ailment, a recurrence of an old injury. .With him shelved, leading end candidates are Elvis Mitchell, Jay Dearing and Bob Smith, all rising from the jayvees. Jack Himelwright has the in side track along with Lawver at tackle. However, Kei Mar tin, transfer from Dunsmuir, Calif., is a boy to watch. Para do OSCAft FKALIY llaMad Ptwa New York (UJ- Little Phil Rizzuto, the sparkplug of the New York Yankees, peered hesitantly into the future today and asserted that the Brooklyn Dodgers will be tougher to beat in the 1953 World Series than they were in last year's full seven-game battle. "Understand, I'm not claiming the pennant yet," : the scooter insisted cautiously. .nThis is all 'if because I don't want to put the, jinx on us." But, "if the Yankeets and Dodgers do square off in the World Series, the little short stop who already has played in seven of the baseball classic has nothing but respect for the Dodgers Tough Barters "I saw them in four game over the Labor Day weekend, when I was sent home from St, Louis because of heat prostra tion," Rizzuto explaintd,rMand that lineup is murder. "They will be tougher than last year, too, because they have more confidence, ha added. "They have better pitching and they are hitting well, and that batting lineup, phew! Any one of them, all the way down the batting order, can put it out of the park." Strangely enough, the scooter is rooting for the Dodgers to walk off with the National League flag as quickly as pos sible. 4 May Be Cocky "I hope they win every game, right up to the end; he grinned. It was a JDJ League hassle and marked the debut of Glen dale into the small Class A school circuit. The Eagles struck for one touchdown in the first quarter, two in the second one in the third and two in the fourth. Two Eagle Point jaunts to the end zone were nullified in the open ing canto by penalties. . , End Frank Reich was on the receiving end of three touch down pass plays.. The first was on the opening scrimmage play of the game. Reich took a sleep er pass from Charles Eccleston and ran down the sideline The pass and run was good for 57 yards. The conversion buck failed. Masoa Intercepts A 55-yard drive wound up in another touchdown for the Eagles in the second stanza. The pay-off was another Eccleston to Reich aerial good for 19 yards. A pass conversion try was incomplete and the count was 12 to 0. Eagle Point's Eldon Mason intercepted a pass on the Glen dale 30 and romped to the one- foot mark. The next play lost ground. Then, Wayne Gillaspey punched across the goal and bucked the extra point try. Half time score was 19 to 0. A Gillaspey to Reich pass gained 77 yards and third period TD. Jack Greb booted the extra counter and Eagle Point's mar gin was 26 to 0. John Fox plunged one yard for a fourth quarter score but ' Greb's kick failed. The concluding TD re suited from a bad Glendale cen ter snap. John Bunker scooped up the ball on the 18 yard stripe and went all the way. Eccleston converted. Back Bob Stewart was lost to the Eagle Point team in the first quarter when fie suffered a bro ken leg. Back Gene Eccleston was also disabled in the first quarter and was unable to re turn to the Eagle line-up. HOT ROD RECORDS SET Wendover, Utah U.R Mai Hooper, Los Angeles hot rod en thusiast, has six new interna tional Class C speed records, aft er putting his hand built stream liner through its paces on Bon neville Salt ,Flats. He sped through the speed traps at 236.36 miles per hour for a new record in the one mile flying start, top ping the previous record by nearly nine miles per hour. Oth er records he set are: 235.87 mph for the five kilometer run; 232.58 mph for the five mile; 231.95 mph for the 10 kilometer. and 215.97 mph for the 10 mile run. That probably would put them into the series as the favorites and maybe they'd get a little cocky." Little Phil knows how dis astrous that can be, because that's what happened - to the 1942 Yankees when they were beaten by the Cardinals, "That's the only answer to us losing that 1943 series," he re flected. "We won the pennant by a big margin and we simply relaxed. We thought we had the Cards beaten and then 'boom' We looked up one day and the series was over and the Cardi nals had wen it." Going Easy The Yankees today are what you might call a relaxed ball club- There is a lot of light- hearted joshing in the locker room and good natured ribbing during pre-game practice. But once the game starts, the Yanks look like a lot of hungry ball players. "I'm a worrier," Rizzuto ex plained. "I feel good now and everything is going fine, but I'm the kind who worries because things are going too good. That's the way with this ball club. We won't consider we have this pennant until it's locked up." Thursday, Healey drove the car to a new measured mile speed record for production cars of 142.638 mph. The Brit ish driver said it was only by accident that he set the measur ed mile record. American Auto mobile association timers were checking their equipment and decided to clock Healey. It was found he had averaged more than a mile better than the pre vious flying mile record for pro duction autos. On Monday, Healey will un dertake the first of two 24-hour assaults on international and America records for stock and sports cars in a dawn-to-dawn run.
