Local and Stdu Stolen A 1941 sedan owned by D. R. SUckler, 1098 Iowa st, Ashland, was reported stolen at 8 run. Auk. 30. State police checked the state line and discovered that the car is re ported to have been driven south. Pleads Guilty Robert Lee Stnr1tnn 54. South Front St- pleaded guilty in municipal court to driving under the influ ence of liquor and was fined 9100, given a suspended sentence of 30 days and his driver's li cense was suspended for 90 days. He was arrested after a collision between his car and one driven by Dr. Earl L. Lawson, 40 Cra ter Lake ave., at East 12th st. and South Riverside ave., at 2:10 p.m. Sunday, Obiluaries BENJAMIN GILES Benjamin R Giles, 81, died today at the V. A- Domiciliary Center, Camp White. Conger Morris funeral home is in charge of funeral arrangements. LEO SANTERRE Services for Leo I. Santere, 59. who died at Camo White Thursday, will be held in Camp White chapel Wednesday at 9 ajn. with Chaplain John Cum- iskey officiating. Interment will be in Camp White cemetery. The remains will lie in state in Conger Morris funeral home's Gold room until time for the services. The deceased was born In Michigan, Aug. 4, 1894- He was a former third baseman for the Portland Beavers baseball team and was emoloved for a number of years at the Portland Labor temple. He was a veteran of World War I. serving from Aug. 14. 1918, to March 4, 1949, as a corporal. Company "I". 12th Battalion. Replacement Training Center. He was a member of the American Legion and Disabled American Veterans. Survivors include a brother, f. C, San Diego, Calif.; a sister, Mrs. L. Gingras, Phoenix, Ariz ; and twin daughters, Mrs. Nora Robinson and Mrs. Leonora Swanson, Houston, Tex. Minor Damage No citations were issued by police following a collision of two automobiles at Stewart ave. and Whitman st. at 10:55 a m. Sunday. The vehicles were operated by Philip Thomas Young Jra, 1319 Stewart ave., and Allen Leroy Whitehead, 334 minear rd. Police said Young failed to signal for a left turn from Stewart to Whitman and his car vas struck by the White head auto. Damage was minor. Youth Escapes A young driver drove off at a high speed after being stopped by Rogue River police at 8 p.m. Aug. 29, according to the state police. The car he was driving was driving was found by state and Rogue River police shortly after ward abandoned on a ranch near Rogue River. The car, which had a California license, was stolen from Caluso county, Calif., they said. The driver was not found. Man Asks Information To Aid Family Decision Charleston, W. Va. (U.R) H. James Carter, of Washington, D- C, wrote the West Virginia Industrial and Publicity Com mission as follows: "My family is interested in spending my vacation in West Virginia; please send me infor mation so that they can make up my mind." The commission dropped its usual form letter reply and wrote back a letter beginning: "You could do worse, Mr. Car ter." Plane Lands Safely As Firemen Siand By Perl ambudance and a Med ford city fire truck were sum- monded to stand by while a West Coast airlines plane land ed at the Medford municipal airport about 3 p.m. yesterday. The airlines reported that a micro-switch was out of adjust ment and the green light which indicates the landing gear is locked, was not working. The gear proved to be locked, how ever, and the plane landed with out incident. Education Investment Return Unsatisfactory uarbondale. 111. (U.PJ Amer ica is not getting a fair return on its investment in education because gifted high school stu dents are not prepared for col lege, Illinois educator says. Douglas E. Lawson, dean of the college of education of South ern Illinois University, criticized teachers who fail to encourage competent students to take basic courses in high school to prepare them for college. But he added that all high school students should not be encouraged to seek higher edu cation until "colleges make more adequate provision for technical training substantially different from typical present-day callege piograms." Mrs. Niles Edin Winner In Dot Guessing Contest Mrs. Niles A.
