North Africans in France Are Serious Social Problems Paris (U.R) The death of even Algerians from police gun fire during Bastille Day rioting focussed new attention on the serious social problem of 300,000 North Africans living in sub-marginal conditions in France. Most of them are French citi zens since Algeria was made part of the French homeland after World War Two. They come to the capital looking for work, and a better life. Instead, most of them find themselves stranded, broke, un employed, living in the most squalid conditions in France's largest cities. Because of their French citizenship there are no special services set up to pro tect and guide them in what re mains for them a basically fore ign land, and no means of con trolling their entry or move ment. No Exact Figure There is no exact figure on the number of Algerians in France, but most authorities agree that the 300,000 figure furnished by the Family Aid Office is a reli able estimate. Almost all are adult males. The Ministry of Labor lists only 137.600 Algerians as gain fully employed. The rest are largely reduced to begging, ped dling merchandise of dubious quality on the streets, or living by illegal means. Employers say those who have jobs are good workmen, get along well with their fellows, are punctual and well disciplined but markedly slower than native born Frenchmen. Only one in a 1,000 rises to the level of fore man. With less than one in two working, and nearly all low paid, sharing with less fortunate tribesmen means pack ing several persons in a single room lacking even elementary necessities in the worst quarters of the city. The Reds have moved in where they found conditions worse and organized Algerians into "shock troops" that have little to lose in supporting the Communist prop aganda line. The Communists, of course, have everything to gain in stir ring up a natural discontent and in setting up situations in which the Algerians can become public martyrs. Police charge that the Bastille Day rioting at Place de la Nation had all the earmarks of being well-organized in advance. (U.R) Un beaten Fort Leonard Wood Mo., 1952 national semi-pro runner up, can win the crown tonight with a victory over the home town Wichita Boeing Bombers. Wichita advanced into the finals of the 19th annual National Baseball Congress tournament last night with a 5 to 3 victory over defending champion Mili tary District of Columbia. Because it is a double elimina tion tournament, a victory for Fort Leonard Wood tonight will mean the championship. But, should Wichita win, a playoff will be necessary. The Bombers have been defeated once in the tournament. "Everytime I think of the Rams, I get a headache," he said. He had a second in Curly Lambeau, coach of the Redskins who lost to the Forty Niners by a score of 7 to 0 in yesterday's game. "The Forty Niners should lose to the Rams unless the Rams are way off," he said. "If the Forty Niners get Tittle back, they may have a slight chance." Team Let Down . DEMPSEY'S DAUGHTER WED Los Angeles (U.R) Joan Dempsey, 19-year-old daughter of former heavyweight boxing champion Jack Dempsey, was married Saturday to Dennis O'Flaherty, 21-year-old Loyola university student. The bride' mother is former musical comedy star Hannah Williams, who is di vorced from Dempsey. O'Flah erty, son of a retired Santa Mon ica, Calif., Army colonel, met Miss Dempsey seven months ago.
