M., a pris oner of the Reds, was returned to freedom in the POW exchange Aug. 20. He won the nation's highest decoration for valor while serving with the U. S. 3rd Division. On the night of April 24, 1951, Miyamura killed some 40 Chinese singtehanded after ordering Us machine gun squad to duQ back. Jacksonville Boys Working On Civic Betterment Tasks Jacksonville A Junior Police Patrol, for boys between the ages of 10 and 14, has been or ganized here by Police Chief John Ysunza, it was reported Saturday. Enjoy Projects "Betterment of the commu nity" is the objective of the organization, but it was pointed out that the boys get a great deal of enjoyment out of their work at the same time. Among their projects has been building and painting two benches for bus riders of the city, which were completed and put out Sat urday. The boys are civic-minded in their work. Chief Ysunza report ed, and receive instruction in traffic rules, then teach them to younger boys. It is planned for them to purchase bicycle re flectors, and to conduct bicycle safety - inspections. They also plan to build a bicycle rack so that parking of bikes on side walks will be eliminated. Use Chief's Office The group is using the chiefs old office as a meeting place. He now has quarters in the new fire hall. FIRST.FISH Portland (U.R) Mrs. Roy El kins of Portland Friday caught her first fish a six-pound steel head while angling in the Co lumbia river with her two sons. Mrs. El kins is 60 years old. 22 Suits Started For Recovery of Welfare Payments Portland (U.R) The Oregon Public Welfare Commission re ported Saturday it has filed 22 suits in 13 counties seeking to recover $15,809 from persons the Commission claimed had refused to support indigent parents. John W. Brugman, special as sistant attorney general, said the suits average about $714 in claims sought One case, he said, represented a person whose monthly net income after de ductions was $1,130 but who had a parent on state relief rolls. Based on Now Law The suits are based on a stiffer relative responsibility law pass ed by the 1053 Legislature. Com mission Administrator, Mrs. Lola Howard Mason, said legal action is brought only in cases where cooperation was refused. The Commission at its month ly meeting here Friday approved a plan increasing state payment to nursing homes by about $20 a month for state patients. The increase would amount to about $500,000 per biennium on the basis of 1750 patients. Fair. Warm Weather. Forecast for Oregon Br UNITED PRESS The weather bureau Saturday suddenly reversed its prediction of a wet week end in Oregon with a forecast of fair and warm er weather through Sunday. Forecasters said movement of a low pressure trough to the east and absence of any new dis turbances behind it was credited for the improved outlook. Return of sunny skies cheered farmers in many parts of the state whose mid-harvest opera tions were hampered by unsea sonal rains. All weather reporting stations in Oregon except Ontario had precipitation in the 24-hour pe riod ending Saturday morning with amounts ranging from a trace at Pendleton to .22 of an inch at Portland. . Western old-time or swing is set for five evenings and square dancing for two. There will be no dancing on Sunday. Square dancing will be the nights of Sept. 9 and 12. Sauare dance callers from sev eral sections of Oregon will par ticipate on Saturday, Sept. 12, in the Willamette valley's first fall jamboree. In a statement inserted in the Congressional Record, Aug. 3, last day of the session, the Wisconsin Republican said the "basic accomplishment" of the recent session in foreign affairs was "to preserve and strengthen the free world defense against Communist aggression." "We have not been taken in by the changed tune the Krem lin sings," Wiley said. "We have continued to build our strength but at the same time we have reaffirmed our support of the principle of disarmament as a basic tenet of American policy." Slop Work Meeting Set at Bend Mill Bend (U.R) Officials of the CIO International Woodworkers of America said Saturday they have scheduled a stop work meeting at 3 p.m. Monday at the Brooks-Scanlon Lumber mill here to vote on contract renewal. Brooks-Scanlon has offered to renew the present contract with the IWA while the union has of fered to settle for a 5-cent hourly wage hike, retroactive to April 1. A. J. Glassow, general man ager of the firm, said he does not believe the pay increase is warranted because of "the eco nomic and market factors facing the lumber industry." The union cited five-cent in creases by Weyerhaeuser Lum ber Co. as a precedent for their request. Four Jail Escapees Said Still at Large Vancouver, Wash. (U.R) Four prisoners who escaped from Clark county jail here Fri day were still at large Saturday and sheriffs officers said there was no clue to their where abouts. Th mpaiwm were Peter T. Molera, 33, scheduled for ar raignment on a burglary charge; Richard Charlev Foreev. 17. and Ralph A. Chyles, 22, sentenced to 15 years in state institutions for burglary, and James R. Hull, 28. narole violator. The four broke out of the fifth-floor jail by picking a con trol box lock and then slipping through a hole in the floor to the county clerk's office below. Pair Found Guilty of Near Perfect Burglary Aschaffenburg, Germany (U.R) Two United States Army ser geants who spent $18,000 in a 20-month spending spree were found guilty Friday of commit tine an "almost perfect" safe cracking job. Sgt. Lloyd D. Eidsor, 29, of Racine, Wis., and Sgt. Arthur F. Schneider, 21, of Milwaukie, Wis., were convicted of stealing $73,415 and 4,000 German marks from the American Express com pany branch here. They cracked the American Express safe on the night of Nov. 21, 1051, and American Army investigators said the Job was so slick the technique could not be revealed lest other safe crackers use the same methods. Ilo Easing Expected On 66 Requirements Washington (U.R) The Pub lic Health Service decided Sat urday against easing require ments now for communities to get gamma globulin for mass in oculations of children. The service considered the possibility of lowering the num ber of cases rquired for a com munity to bo eligible for an em ergency shipment of gamma globulin.
