He says that Peru claims to have developed the Irish potato. "Some visit ing Chinese." he said, "is be lieved to have invented the Irish stew, al though I under- sand there are few challengers on this from other parts of the world." All of this was interesting to Wheeler, whose business is to know all about things that come from the good earth. He has spent the last two years in Peru with a field party of the Bureau of Inter-American Affairs. His job has been that of a dungaree dip lomat, a representative of the State Department who helps Peruvian fanners to help them selves in an agricultural and natural resource development program. The program has been under way for 10 years and will continue. Wheeler, who will return to his Peruvian assignment shortly made it clear that the project is not a giveaway." "We're just there to help," he aid. "The Peruvian farmers buy their own machinery. We help them to improve their grazing lands and their herds and flocks. W are getting them away from the oxen and onto tractors and threshing machines. Our main object is to help the farmers to Increase their food production." Peru provides most of the funds for the work, while he U. S. representatives "stand by nd give advice, and even de some of the work in dungar ees." The program embraces just about everything that grows there. Cattle, sheep, poultry, and in the fields, sugar cane, cotton, corn, potatoes (Irish, of course), beans and many kinds of pro duce. There also are fruits, like ! bananas and oranges, plus coconuts. American's Editor To Enter Hospital Central Point L. J. (Tick) Malarkey, editor of the Central Point American, will leave for Portland by plane Monday where he will undergo medical treatment at the Veterans Ad ministration hospital, he said Saturday. He plans to return and resume editorial direction of the Ameri can as soon as his health per mits, he added. Malarkey purchased the circulation and advertising rights to the Ameri can from Publisher Kenneth Powell earlier this year. He has not resigned as editor, he said. Malarkey, a veteran of World i War I has been a member of the Camp White Veterans Ad ministration domiciliary from time to time during the four years he has been in the Rogue yauey for health reasons. Dur ing that time he was originator I and writer of a .column, Pickin' j Pears," for the Mail Tribune I from Camp White.
