(International) Unseasonal Oregon Rains Bring Gloomy Predictions From Farms By UNITED PRESS . Farmers and extension service farm experts Saturday made gloomy predictions concerning the damage of unseasonal August rains to Oregon crops. Continued light showers over much of Oregon Friday and pre dictions of more of the same Sunday presented no encourage ment to farmers in the middle of their harvests. i Grain growers in Polk county faced serious losses because of the week's unseasonal rains. With hundreds of acres of vetch, wheat and barley in the process cf harvest or nearly ready, rains have driven crews from the har vesting machinery. Fall Wheat The whole picture was com plicated by late spring rains which delayed beginning of the harvest. Fall wheat was disap pointingly light and much of it fell while still green. Barley faces discoloration or overripeness if rains continue, resulting in downgrading or loss. ; , Dr. Don D. Hill, Oregon State college farm crops department feead, estimated that one half of the Willamette valley's haan chen malting barley crop is in danger "of discoloration and sprouting, with consequent downgrading. He said he sees similar weath er damage possible for large amounts of oats, wheat and vetch. Vetch also is (threatened ny moid, ne said. , Dr. Harry O'Reilly, extension plant pathologist, recommended immediate -anti-blight spraying and dusting of potatoes in the Portland area and along the coast. O'Reilly also noted an outbreak of flower and leaf spot in gladiolus. A bright spot in the weather picture was pointed out by Rex Warren, extension farm crops specialists. Pastures are getting a late summer boost, certain weeds are germinating in time to be destroyed by fall tillage op erations and the weather is fa vorable for pasture seeding on non-irrigated lands.' 500 Volunteers Searching For Missing Berry Picker Government Camp U.R) About 500- volunteer searchers Saturday fanned out over the wild Mt. 'Hood area in search of 60-year-old Ralph C. Day. missing on a berry picking ex pedition since last Sunday. , Search operations Friday were a, disappointment. About 150 men combed a 15-acre, brush covered area on the mountain in vestigating the possibility that Day may have fallen from a bluff above. Search Difficult Jim Ralph, assistant ranger at the Summit ranger station, said the search was conoentrat- 'Trouble Shooter' Sought in Slaying 01 Union Organizer New York U.R) Police Saturday sought a former $2,000-a-month "trouble shooter" at Yonkers Raceway suspected of engineering the ambush slaying of powerful union organizer Thomas L. Lewis outside his Bronx apartment. The strong arm "trouble shooter," a man with a long criminal record, was said to have been fired from his lucrative racetrack post last June at the Insistence of Lewis. Lewis or-! ganized the tracks employees and represented them as presi dent of Local 32 A of the AFL Building, Service Employees union. Shot Near Home The 38-year-old union leader was shot to death near the door of his fifth floor apartment Fri day by a professional gunman who then was killed by a traffic- policeman in a blazing gun bat tle that forced bystanders to drop to the ground. The assassin was Edward (Snakes) Ryan, 45, a prohibi tion days hoodlum with a long criminal record whom police be lieve was hired to kill Lewis. - Lewis, who organized , em ployees of the Yonkers raceway two years ago, was shot four times as he stepped from an el yator and walked toward his apartment. The killer raced down four flights of stairs and into the street. Officer Hears Screams Patrolman Vincent Langan, attracked by a woman's scream, began chasing Ryan through nearby St. James park. Ryan fired five shots at Langan and the policeman fired nine in return. Pedestrians duck ed into doorways or threw themselves to the pavement to avoid the bullets. Ryan was hit four times by Langan's shots, but fell only when a bullet pierced his skull. Plenty of Idiots on Road, Judge Declares Baytown, Tex. (U.R) E. W. Buelow, acting corporation court Judge, lectured a traffic violator as' follows: . "You've heard it said that the good lord looks after little chil dren and idiots- We're all a part of the Lord's scheme of things and we must help him in his work. So it behooves us to look after the idiots and, goodness knows, there are plenty of them on the roads." The witnesses cppeared on be half of Prof. Alex B. Novikoff. 40-year-old biochemist of cancer expert who was suspended be cause he refused to answer cer tain questions before the U. S. Senate Internal Security sub committee. . .They testified before the Uni versity's 29-member Board of Review which granted the hear ing at Novikoff 's request. Thou g h Novikoff originally asked for a public hearing, he changed his mind Saturday and asked that the press be barred. The board,' however refused and Novikoff s attorney said he would not allow his client to be questioned. Dr. William B. Roberts, an other biochemistry professor, said he had known Novikoff since 1948 and had "no evi dence" indicating his colleague was "disloyal." Asked by board counsel Louis Lisman if he thought, Novikoff ever was a Communist, Roberts said: "I think he probably was." Rabbi Max B. Wall, spiritual leader of Novikoff s congrega tion, said in answer to a ques tion that he thought Novikoff once was a Communist but was "positive" that he is not now a Red. ' Alert Baby Sitter Saves Lives of Four . Portland y.R) Four chil dren were alive Saturday thanks to the alertness of a baby-sitter who smelled gas in their apartment. ' The sitter, Patty B. O'Brien, 14, was credited by Officer Elm er A. Loos with saving the lives the children of Mrs. Lenora Ad ams, Portland. The children, Lewis, 2; Brian, 3; Bruce 7, and Brady, 8, were playing in a bedroom when Pat tey, sitting in another room, smelled gas, turned on, in a cir culating heater by one of the children. . She took the youngsters-downstairs to the home of Mrs. Paula M. Yankey, who tele phoned the gas company and the police. . - - . Brought irive vnaraes Aga i nst Gory; Cou rt Sets Bail at $39,509 Roseburg (U.R) - Five counts ranging from illegal possession of a firearm to kidnaping Sat- Operating Limits Set for Air Lines Washington (U.R) A Civil Aeronautics Board official said Saturday that some feeder-line airports, particularly in moun tain areas, may have to lengthen their runways or lighten plane loads by Oct. 1. That is the effective date of new operating limitations for DC-3 and Lockheed Lodestar planes operated by scheduled airplines. The limitations were approved by the CAB last April. Feeder airlines gather passen gers from small, remote airports and carry them to trunkline air ports, mainly for transfer to trunk-line airlines; The feeder airline fleet is made up almost 100 per cent of DC-3's. The hew regulations require longer runways or, as an alter native, lighter plane loads than are currently required for DC-3 and Lockheed Lodestar planes operated by schedule airlines. New Navy Policy Set For Doctors, Dentists Washington (U.R) The Navy has announced a new pol icy designed to make a Navy career more attractive to young physicians and dentists. , . The policy permits Medical and Dental Corps officers to re sign from the service after four years of active duty. Jones against William Frank Corey, Roseburg, who is accused of forcing Jones' wife to accompany him against her will. , $39,500 BaQ Set' Bail set by Judge A. J. Ged des totaled $39,500 for all the counts. Corey, who police said has a prison record, was charged with kidnaping, assault with a dan gerous weapon, assault and rob bery with a dangerous weapon, ellegaf possession of a firearm and larceny of personal prop erty. Corey pleaded innocent of the larceny charge and asked for preliminary hearings on the oth er counts. He said he had no attorney and Deputy District At torney Warren Woodruff asked the court to appoint counsel for the defendant. Judge Geddes said no dates for preliminary hearings would be set until an attorney had been named to rep resent Corey. Corey was arrested by Med ford police Wednesday night on a tip fromjthe proprietor of a Shady Cove restaurant who told officers the woman made known her plight while she and Corey were eating. Mrs. Jones told police Corey I entered the place wnere sne was employed Wednesday and forced her at gunpoint to enter his car. The larceny charge involved theft of a revolver belonging to Jones.
