WILLIAM sheuld mi n KlrTETEEirTH CENTURY BLUNDERBUSS In the eighteen years I served In more or less honest practice as a family doctor, before I took to quacking it in the public prints, as we doctors called the newspapers before we learned hew to get into them without too ob vious intention to do so, I loved tn nlr. n r v and snoop. While puttering about the house waiting for a primipara to get down to business, or washing my hands, or making sure my hair was properly brushed I did toot I had plenty of opportunities to inspect the family medicine cabinet. I can't tell you some of the things I found there, not in a family newspaper. I do tell what should and what should not be kept in the med icine chest. In Little Lesson No. 14. THE MEDICINE -CUPBOARD, for which booklet send 25c and stamped, self-addressed envelope. One thing I found in too many such medicine cabinets was a box or vial of pills or tablets known as A B & S a nineteenth century shotgun mixture of horse medicine (aloes or its ac tive principle aloin), belladonna (deadly nightshade) and strych nine. There were several varia tions of the formula perhaps mix vomica (the crude drug) in stead of its alkaloid, strychnine; or atropine, the alkaloid, instead of crude belladonna; or dashes of mastic, ipecac, colcynth, cas cara or what have you. The tab lets or Rills were chocolate or candy-coated, which made them attractive for children who hap pened to get hold of them. Now the striking feature of nux vomica (strychnine) poison ing is restlessness, twitching movements, stiffness in the fin ger muscle muscles or in the muscles of the face when the vic tim laughs, jerking of arm or leg and finally general convulsions. The mind remains clear and the spasms or convulsions are ex tremely painful. Death occurs within two or three hours after the strychnine has been taken. When such death comes to a child, the responsibility rests heavily on the person who keeps the poison in the medicine cabi net or in any part of the house. One who is reasonably well in formed, not misinformed, will not take any such medicine in any circumstance. Ignorance of the law excuses no man. Ignor ance of physiology and hygiene is no excuse either. The blunderbuss "aid" to reg ulation of the bowel came into use in this fashion: The old timers recognized that aloe was a cathartic (for horses and other animals), so they applied it in human practice. But it caused pretty severe griping, so they added an antispasmodic drug to lower the intensity of the grip ing belladonna or its active principle atropine. But, darn it, the antispasmodic checked sup pressed secretion throughout the alimentary tract, causing dry ness of the mouth and throat, impairing digestion in stomach and intestine. So the hammer and tongs men added a good dash of nux vomica or its active principle strychnine, you know, to stimulate the secretory func M Motoring this weekend?
