Bob Atkinson Will Defend Southern Oregon Mantle Sogu Valley Country dub officiaia reported today that Bob Atkinson, Portland, defin italy will defend his Southern Oregon Golf tournament champ ionship. ' The tourney Is scheduled here September 3 through 7. Atkin son, Columbia-Edgewater club ace, won the southern Oregon toga both In 1951 and 1992, de feating Eddie Simmons, Med ford, six-time champion. Word concerning Atkinson's entry was brought by George Harrington, who nosed out At kinson by one stroke last week end in the Oregon Golf associa tion medal play tourney at Os wego. Harrington said that Dick Hanen, Coos Bay, . four times southern Oregon titlist, will also 'compete here this year. He has not participated for several years. Other entries include Bennie Hughes, Portland, finalist in the national public links tourney a few years ago; Sid Milligan, leading Eugene golfer, and George Beechler, Ontario, Sal cm high -school star of many years ago. He is a member of theiocal club. The Southern Oregon champ ionships are being held for the 25th time this year. Qualifying play for local high handicappers got underway here today. For Rogue Valley men not aiming for the champ ionship flight qualification play will last through next Wednes day. Local women with handi caps of 13 or more will make their 18-hole rounds through next Tuesday. Rogue Valley ladies with handicaps of 12 or more will qualify next Wednes day morning. Rogue Valley men shooting for championship play and all out-of-town men and women will take their prelim rounds on Thursday, September 3, offic ial opening day of the tourna ment. White Sox Plan To Drop Dobson Chicago U.R) The Chicago White Sox today asked waivers on 26-year-old pitcher Joe Dob son In order to make room on the squad for Infielder Connie Ryan who was purchased from the Philadelphia Phillies. The Sox said they were ask ing waivers on Dobson, who has a record of five wins and five losses this season, for the pur pose of giving him an uncondi tional release. Ryan has been batting .296 for the Phillies, but had been sel dom used since rookie Ted Ka zanski was called up from the minors several weeks ago. It was primarily the efforts of two former University of Oregon stars which gave the Rams their win in the annual Times Charities game, which at tracted a crowd of 83,000. Norm Van Brocklin, recently featured in a story in Collier's, set up a Ram touchdown with his passing and Woodley Lewis came through with one of his patented and spectacular punt returns, going 73 yards to score. Meet Browns The Rams meet the Cleveland Browns in Los Angeles Friday night and the San Francisco Forty-Niners next week before heading for Portland and their rematch with the Cardinals. Chicago heads for the North west this week, meeting the Green Bay Packers at Spokane Saturday night. Then the Cards will come to Portland for a week of practice prior to the clash with the Rams.
