The vivacious young redhead began her film career at Uni versal International when she was 17 and had never made a picture elsewhere until she was loaned to RKO last month for "Rangers of the North." "Vic Mature, my co-star, really goes out of his way to help me do a scene. He's a perfectionist. "The gowns," she smiled, "are out of this world. U-I wouldn't let me wear them, even if the part called for it. The ward robe department here kept ask ing for lower cut bodices and tighter sweaters. I really feel 21 for a change Makes Suggestions "I can make suggestions as we go along, too. At Universal people would listen to me, then go ahead with things the way they'd planned them. At U-I I'm still just the little girl who grew up on the back lot." The youthful acress returns to her home lot in a few weeks to co-star opposite Tony Curtis in "Johnny Dark," but looks for ward to being loaned out again. "What I'll miss most," Piper sighed, "is the little man here at RKO who spends all his time in a corner just making coffee. tA U-I we have to use the vending machine. Teacher Inservice Training Program Slated Sept. 34 Seven Jackson county elemen tary schools will hold a two-day inservice training meeting at Howard school Sept 3 and 4, according to county schools of ficials. Participating schools will be Applegate, Griffin Creek, How ard, Lone Pine; Oak Grove, Ruch and West Side. Principals Bruce Metzger and Harold Boner have arranged the program for the meeting. ' It will open Tuesday morning with Henry Kammann presiding. Lawrence Butler, of Southern Oregon college, assisted by rep resentatives of the Corvallis Tape Center, will discuss effect ive use cf visual aids in the class room. Max Manchester of the Oregon Public Employees Re tirement system, and County School Superintendent Alf B. Mekvold will discuss the retire ment system and the new social security program. Mrs. Bertha Haskins will act as chairman. Plan Section Meetings Metzger will preside at the Friday morning session, when the theme will be "Teaching Chldren to Read." Miss H. Irene Hallberg, state department of education supervisor of elemen tary education, will act as con sultant. Sectional meetings will be led by Dorothy Arney, pri mary; Audrey Berry, intermed iate, and Una B. Inch, upper grades. Viola Laird of the Cen rtTrT Point schools will assist. . Boner will preside Friday afternoon, when Jennings Pierce, manager of radio sta tion KMED, will discuss the im portant of public relations in education. Rollie Davis, Howard school will direct the program for cus todians and Mrs. H. W. Crock er will conduct the program for cafeteria cooks. Both will run concurrently with the teachers program. Paneling Design Covers Joints Here is a paneling design for fir plywood that gives a wall an individual architectural ef fect, concealing almost all joints. It consists of a series of rec tangles and squares of plywood applied to the wall in a wain coting effect. You can develop any pattern you wish. One that works well consists of a -series of panels 48" high and 12" wide beveled at the edges and nailed against a plywood background surface with edges 2V4" apart Beneath that row is a hori zontal panel 6" wide applied the same way, 2V4" below the bot tom edge of the longer panels. The area between this one and the floor is handled with hori zontal panels spaced the same way. This creates an effective pat tern of wainscoting that covers all but a few inches of vertical joints in any wall. Jet Fighter Speed, Bomber Range Joined Washington (U.R) The Air Force apparently has found a way to combine jet fighter speed and heavy bomber range for atomic attacks against dis tant targets. It announced it has successful ly turned the B36 Superbomb- er into a flying aircrait carrier a jet fighter-bomber in flight, which can release and retrieve Successful experiments have shown, the Air Force said, that an F84F Thunderstreak jet can be launched from the belly of a B36 several miles above the earth and then recovered, still in high altitude flight, by an in tricate set of "sky hooks" and lifting apparatus which hauls it back to the "mother" ship. This kangaroo-like combina tion would have both the inter continental range of the B36 and the speed of the fighter, the Air Force said. Educational Grants Given South Korea Seoul, Korea (U.R) The Korean-American foundation, a privately endowed mission, to day announced grants totaling $133,000 to improve educational and nursing standard in war ravaged South Korea. The foundation awarded nine educational grants amounting to $100,000 and 10 grants worth $39,000 in the nursing educa tional field. Warning Given on Keeping Dangerous Souvenirs of War ' Salem (U.R) Twenty-four war souvenirs in the form of high explosives have been dis covered in various parts of Ore gon during the past year, State Civil Defense Director Col. Ar thur M. Sheets said today . Sheets said persons finding explosives of any type bombs or small ordnance should give this information immed iately to the local civil defense organization or police agency. Dangerous explosives uncov ered recently range from a 27 millimeter anti-aircraft shell and rocket found in King's val ley earlier this month to a 2000 pound sea mine found at Cape Meares in April. Col. Sheets said: "With Kor ean veterans returning home, people should be on the lookout for supposedly harmless war souvenirs. A dud is apt to be dangerous and should not be moved or jarred." Because paprika pods are tough, as many as six or eight grmaings are necessary to re duce them to proper fineness. Vest Side School Registration Set September 1st Registration of pupil attend ing West Side school will be held Tuesday, Sept. 1, it was an nounced today. The pupils will be dismissed by noon. Regular classes are scheduled to start Tuesday, Sept 8. Children who are six yean of age on or before Nov. 15 will be eligible to enter the first grade. Others may -take school readi ness tests at the county schools office in the courthouse by con tacting Mrs. Una B. Inch, sup ervisor, for an appointment. Parents of first grade pupils are requested to bring their child's birth certificate and health certificate with them the first day of school. Cafeteria Open First Day The school cafeteria will begin serving meals Tuesday, Sept 8. The price of lunches will be 25 cents day. Until completion of the new West Side four-room building, a class room will be set up in the school gymnasium. . The teaching staff this year will include Mrs. Dorothy Laws, Ashland, first and second grades; Mrs. Bertha Haskins, Medford, third and fourth grades and fifth grade girls; William Croucher. fifth grade boys and sixth and seventh grades. Eighth grade students will be transported to Medford junior high school and Central Point junior high school. Mrs. Pauline Konopasek 1s cafeteria cook. Mrs. Hag kins is school principal. Durkin Expects Plan For T-H Amendments Washington (U.R) Secre tary of Labor Martin P. Durkin said yesterday the administra tion may shortly propose am endments to the Taft-Hartley law. Durkin said administration officials are "still working" on a message to Congress calling for changes in the labor-management law. Durkin declined to say what the message will contain.
