X MFPFOHP (ORZGOK) MAIL TBXBTJHE Tuesday. August IS. IMS Mental Treatment Program Credited For Patient Cut Topeka. Kan. (U.B The Topeka State Hospital, where a reorganized treatment program haa achieved substantial results, believes it is the only state men tal Institution in the nation whose patient census has de creased radically in recent years. At the start of the new fiscal year, the hospital had fewer pa tients than at any time since 1912- This was true even though more patients were admitted during the last twelve months than at any time in the past 20 years. Nearly 1,800 patients were In the institution when the reor ganization of the hospital was undertaken in 1948. The patient roster numbered 1,392 on July 1. Dr. Clark Case, acting superin tendent, said the ratio of patients discharged as recovered or im proved to those admitted hit a gratifyingly high 66 per cent in the 1st year. Prior to 1948 the average was closer to 40 per cent. Admissions during the year totaled 396 and discharges as re covered or improved 263. In ad dition to those discharged, 285 other were placed on con valescent leaves in preparation for discharge. Hew Treatment Credited "These striking results demon strate the effectiveness of the treatment program which was begun five years ago," Dr. Case commented. "The new program Is paying off far beyond the ex pectations anyone had when it started." The program of increased treatment included many factors, but the emphasis was on better qualified psychiatric personnel, with the famed Menninger foun dation of psychiatric research here playing a big part through. Its assistance- "More people are getting real treatment for their mental dis tress and more are getting well than ever before," said Dr. Case. The hospital's administrator added that patients now are able to enter the institution almost Immediately after a formal ap plication is received. This is in contrast to the long periods of waiting required previously when the hospital was over crowded. It, too, has been a help in restoring many patients to a normal life. BMW' UT.
