August 25. 1953 Telephone Negotiations Locked; AT&T Workers Attend Meetings a UNITED PRESS Negotiations in telephone strikes affecting seven states were deadlocked today as union official! charged the Bell Sys tem with pursuing "high button hoes" labor policy. Meanwhile 1,000 American Telephone and Telegraph Com pany employees In four eastern cities walked out for four hours yesterday to attend union meet ings. They charged that the com pany was using "dilatory tactics" In the long lines contract nego tiations in New York. At St. Louis, where govern ment mediators worked to end strike of 53,000 Communica tions workers of America mem bers against the Southwestern Bell System, the company plan ned newspaper advertisements to explain its position. One Issue Remains Only one issue held up settle ment of that strike. The union called it a "no strike clause," and a "'last minute legal gimmick." Southwestern Bell said that three shots from a high powered rifle damaged a cable near Jop lin, Mo., yesterday and disrupted service on 800 long distance tele type circuits. In another incident at Joplin, a non-striker complained to po lice that his car was marked with lipstick and chalk. California Declared Better Than Florida For Retired Oldsters Albany, N.Y. (U.R) State Sen. Thomas C. Desmond claims retired oldsters seeking warmer climates will find California "more suitable" than Florida. The Newburgh Republican, a leading authority on problems of the aged, today gave 10 rea- Searchers Fail To Find Sign of Man Lost Hear Ml. Hood Portland XU.PJ Weary search ers reported today no sign had been discovered of Ralph Day, 60-year-old Portland business man missing since Sunday noon south of Mt Hood. A group of searchers, includ ing 19 firefighters, pushed through rain-swept ridges in the Wolf Camp butte area yesterday but said they found no tell-tale marks to Indicate Day had been in the area. Mountain Climbers Called Late in the day, searchers put out a call for members of the Mountain Rescue council, which includes all mountain climbing organizations, for volunteers to Join in the hunt. Day, owner of the Ralph Day Iron Works in Portland, disap peared while on a huckleberry- picking expedition Sunday with his wife and friends. His family reported he suffered from high blood pressure and might have lapsed into a coma at the high altitude. Day was clad only in a pair of slacks, a light sweater, sports coat and hat. Nursing home standards in California are uniformly high er. 8. Local communities have developed programs for elderly people that have only just begun in Florida. 9. The western economic re sources are diversified and strong enough to take a reces sion, where Florida's lop-sided economy would be hard hit. 10. Some of the nation's top medical experts and facilities for the aged are located in Cal ifornia. Knowland To Survey Free Asian Nations Tokyo-(U.R) Senate Republi can Leader William F. Know land of California arrived here by air today to begin a survey of the free Asian nations. Knowland said he would go to Korea in two or three days to confer with President Syngman Rhefe and U.S. officials there. CIO Communications Workers staged peaceful mass meetings in Indiana last night. Settlement la South CWA strike director A. J. Jones, Washington, D.C., called on the company to "get rid of its high-button shoes" policy at an Evansville, Ind., meeting. He re ferred to' wage differentials, a strike issue in the Indiana Bell dispute. The walkouts in the East, at Philadelphia, Boston, Providence, and Springfield, Mass., were similar to the one that disrupted long distance service in Chicago last week. Some 2,300 employees stopped work there to attend a "protest meeting." New Contract Signed The Southern Bell System yes terday signed a new contract with the CWA, providing raises of $1 to $3 a week for workers in nine southeastern states. The old pay scale for "hello girls" in the Southern System was $38.50 to $55. In Oregon, union members were taking a strike vote follow ing collapse of negotiations. No strike deadline was set. Mrs. Hobby Denies Department Fails To Cooperate Beverly Hills. Calif. U.F3 Mrs. Oveta Culp Hobby, secre tary of Health, Education and Welfare, said today it is a "com plete surprise" to her if her de partment has not been fully co operative with Congress. She made the. statement after Rep. Carl T. Curtis (R.-Neb.) charged that the department has been withholding "essential in formation" requested by his House Ways and Means subcom mittee. Always Cooperative Mrs. Hobby, on her way to Los Angeles to address a Red Cross meeting, said she believed her department had "always been cooperative" with Curtis' subcommittee. Curtis, who heads the subcom mittee, said in a statement dis tributed by his office last night that he would not like to believe that Mrs. Hobby "has been insin cere in her statements about Im proving social security." Refuses To Amplify But, he said, "the fact remains that her department has not been cooperating" with the sub committee's social security in vestigation. Curts statement gave no indi cation what kind of information the subcommittee has been un able to get, and the Congress man himself refused to amplify his statement.
