Round-Up audiences particularly like the Washington Publisher Exchanges Charges With McCarthy on Freedom of the Press Washington (U.R) Gen Joseph R. McCarthy (R-Wis.), end Philip L. Graham, publisher have exchanged charges re garding a recent Post editorial and press freedom. McCarthy said the editorial contained "falsification" and that this was of "more than academic Interest" since the newspaper receives mail subsidies from the government. Graham said the editorial was "fair" and declared he did not agree with McCarthy "that news papers should be compliant to a senator's demands just because the Congress has voted mail rates that may psovide a subsidy to newspapers. On Wchiler Quia The editorial in question dealt with the questioning of James Wechsler, editor of the New York Post, during hearings be fore McCarthy's permanent In vestigating subcommittee McCarthy objected to a state ment in the editorial that Weschs ler "was subjected to intensive interrogation about editorials in his newspaper critical of Sen. Jogstrry Lesson ... Spain ceded all claims on the Pacific north of the 42nd par allel of latitude in 1819, when the United States bought Flor ida. It became the southern boundary of the "Oregon Coun try." The Russians in Alaska around 1821 declared possession of the North American Pacific Coast down to the 51st parallel, a claim disputed by both Great Britain and the United States. We'uns made a two-nation treaty with Russia three years later that held the line to-54 de grees and 40 minutes north lati tude. Next year Great Britain agreed. Then she squared off at the United States to what flag was to fly over the Pacific North west country between the 42nd parallel and old 54-40. The Rus sians were pleased. They always like to see Rule Britannia and Hail Columbia in each other's hair. The United States and Great Britain peacefully agreed to joint ocupancy of Oregon, however, until their treaty of June 15, 1846. The boundary was left at the 49th parallel, with a south ward dip to leave the whole of Vancouver Island to the British, with half of Juan de Fuca Strait. More Seesawing ... Boundary making was a great national concern of the time. The lines between Canada and Maine had been in long dispute, until August, 1842, when they were settled by the Webster-Ashbur-ton Treaty. From 1820 to 1848 the southwest boundaries of the United States were an issue that was decided only by the annexa tion of Texas and the dirty Polk War with Mexico. U. S. possession of California brought up a new question on the extension of the Missouri Compromise line on the 36-30 parallel through to the Pacific Coast. This would have given Southern California to slavery and the northern part to free dom. For the politics of it, look up "The Wilmot Proviso" in your history books. General Stephen W. Kearney was sent west with 1,800 soldiers in 1846, to conquer California. Utah's powerful Brigham Young sent 500 Mormon volunteers west to the legendary land, and made ready to move to Utah. But before them all Captain John C. Fremont, of the U. S. Engineers, was making -his "Pathfinder" name but not ex actly earning it. In California Fremont made contact with an American naval force that was cruising off Mon terey Bay. Once more the Ma rines landed, with sailors, too. They joined the small Fremont expedition, overthrew the Mex ican government and formed a provisional government under something called the Bear Flag. There was a tremendous row when General Kearney arrived. It boiled over in a court martial for Fremont, caused his dismiss al from the Army, led to a fa mous feud between Democrat Senator Benton of Missouri and Democrat President Polk and finally, in 1856, to Fremont's se lection as its first Presidential nominee by the new Republican Party. He was not elected. The Dust Settles ... On an Oregon expedition in 1843, Fremont had descended the Columbia to Fort Vancouver, then had returned up river as far as The Dalles, from there striking out overland to Cali fornia. He explored but did not discover a route that California vaqueros were to follow with cattle herds, meeting the voy ageurs of Canada on the Great River of the West The Mexican War came for mally to an end in February, 1848, California was ours and, incidentally, Texas, too. On Aug ust 13, 1848, Oregon Territory came into existence. Abraham Lincoln declined the governor ship. Governor Joseph Lane later as Congressional Territor ial Delegate to foster the birth of Washington Territory took office on March 2, 1849. He was a mighty good man. It is well for the richest timber county on earth to be named for him. McCarthy.' A committee of the American Society of Newspaper Editors, headed by the Post's managing editor, J. R. Wiggins, studied the record of the Wechsler question ing to determine whether free dom of the press was endangered. The full 11-man group decided it was not its function to reach a conclusion. But Wiggins and three other editors issued a minority report saying that free dom of the press had been en dangered. Asks Questioning In letters Friday night to the seven who did not join in the minority report, McCarthy for a second time asked that Wiggins be questioned about the alleged "falsification" in the editorial. No action was taken on a similar request he made Aug. 14. Wiggins is on vacation in Maine- In a statement, Graham charged that McCarthy was "at tempting to disguise his real pur pose as a personal attack on Mr. Wiggins." The real purpose, he said, is "to deny the right of an independent newspaper to ex press its own editorial opinions." Six Persons Killed In Hesd-On Crash Yuma, Ariz. (U.R) An unsuc cessful attempt by a car to pass a semi-truck was blamed today for a three-car collision in which six persons were killed and five others injured, one critically. Arizona Highway Patrol offi cers said the collision occurred on U.S. Highway 60 some 50 miles east of here yesterday. The dead were identified as Mrs. Rose Fang Lee, 35, Tucson; her daughter Evelyn, 6; Mrs. Jennie Self, 35, Brawley, Calif.; her husband, James Self, 55; their son, William Allen Self, 3; and W. M. Simpson, 63, West Moreland, Calif. Jerry Lee, husband of Mrs. Lee, who is in critical condition; and four of his children Lillian 14, Jerry 12, Victor 9, and Les ter, 4. None of the children was injured seriously. Chilean Official Denies No-Sale Report Santiago, Chile U.B For eign Minister Oscar Fenner yes terday denied reports from Washington that Chile has prom ised not to sell copper to the Communist nations. But, the foreign minister said, Chile will accept no European orders while present price nego tiations with the United states are in progress. Fenner said Chile hoped to reach a "preferential under standing" with the U.S. and add ed that he was 'confident the Washington negotiations will produce good results."
