Meeting Planned Rogue River Laurel Garden club of Rogue River won first prize at the Josephine County fair for iti entry "Blue Bird Trail Park." The entry was made up of various summer flowers, moss and miniature trees laid out in a park with playground equipment in miniature, dolls, cars, road lights, silica for the roads and a playground. Tiny blue bird houses hung in the trees, as well as a real bird's nest containing three tiny eggs. Members who won with their individual entries were Mrs. W. A. White, sweepstakes winner and blue ribbon for her double tiger lilies, second on a single tiger lily, first on decorative white dahlia, first on pompon dahlia, second on annual phlox and first on Unwin dahlia; Mrs. Henry Bonney, second on yellow dahlia; Mrs. Orma Farnham, third on pink and purple petu nias; Mrs. Claude Willoughby, third on pink dahlia. August meeting of the club was held at the country home of Mrs. Claire Douglas, and was a dinner with husbands of mem bers as guests. Next meeting will be Septem ber 2 at the home of Mrs. Wal ter Kasworm at 1 p.m. Gold was discovered in Aus tralia in 1851. S. Campbell home. A potluck picnic supper was serv ed in the patio. The game of horse shoe was a diversion of the evening and the women held a brief business meeting at which a rummage sale was planned for Wednes day evening, August 26 and all day Thursday, August 27. The sale Is to be used toward the group's annual Christmas pro ject which provides toys for children of needy families. It will be held jn a vacant store building next to the Bartlett street Safeway store. Those who have rummage to be picked up may call tele phones 2-4034 or 2-9882 by Tues day afternoon. Mrs. E. O. Mc Keen is chairman for the sale with Mrs. Herbert Seitz, assisting. Mrs. E. S. .Etrother, Shady Cove, recently entertained Cir cle 2 of Medford Methodist woman's Society of Christian Service at her summer home on Rogue River. A brief business session was held and a covered dish dinner was served. Announcement was made of two study groups to be held in the Medford Methodist church. Dr. Gertrude Boyd Crane, Pa cific university, Forest Grove, will conduct the first, September 8 to 12 and another in October which Mrs. Hardwick W. Harsh- man will lead. ' Subject of Dr. Crane's study will be "Jeremiah the Prophet,"' and Mrs. Harsh man will lead the subject, "Latin Speaking Americans in the Unit ed States. The book used in this study will be "Within Our Bor Mrs. Harshman was a guest at the meeting. Mrs. E. G. Paschke will be chairman for the circle bazaar and Mrs. Floyd Lewis is chair man of the sunshine and visita tion committee. A dessert luncheon was serv ed to 16 members of WSCS Cir cle 4 and a visitor at the home of Mrs. W. G. Werner on Tuesday. Mrs. J. R. Woodford prepared the devotions from the book, "The Golden Key," and a quiz program was conducted from The Methodist Woman," led by Mrs. Bryan Pierce. Numerous ideas and plans were discussed for a bazaar. Next regular meeting of the cir cle will include a work time be fore lunch, each member to take a sack lunch. Mrs. Walter Gar ner, hostess for that meeting, will furnish dessert and coffee. A newspaper survey covering 1,724 physicians revealed that 1,700 of them believe women should not wear shoes without stockings. Much of the increase in serious foot trouble among women, the doctors said, is due to the practice of going without stockings in summer. J. Fuson and Ed Ma this took second with 103Vi points, and the Howard Boyds were third with 89. Mr. and Mrs. B.'L. Sanderson scored 84 points to take fourth. Mrs. C . Kunz and William Hickey scored 97 points for east west first place, and second went to Mrs. Mary F. Raines and John Sharp for a score of 94. Mrs. Gallier and Mr. Lynch were third with 93 Vi and fourth went to Oda Thomasson and Mrs. Edwin Eggert for 88 points. Winners Announced For Riverside Club " Riverside Bridge - club win meet Wednesday, August 28, at 1 p.m. at the American Legion home, Riverside avenue.' Last week's winners for the north-south position were Mrs. W. W. Stevenson and Al Gilhou sen, first; Mrs.- Alice Swanson and William Isaacs, second; Mrs. Frank R. Baker and Mrs. Van Gilbert, third. East-west winners were Mrs. Josephine Clark and Mrs. Marrs Gibbons, first; Mrs. Yvonne Da lem and Mrs. N. F. Reed, second; Mrs. Fred Rehling and Mrs. Dwight Seely, third. Hutchins, 870 Gar field street, was honored at a family dinner August 19 at the home of her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Clifford W. Hutchins, 112 South' Colum bus avenue. Barbers Return From Tr'p Abroad Mr. and Mrs. Frank Barber, 718 McAndrews road, have re turned home after spending sev en weeks traveling to England and Scotland where they visited relatives and friends. This was the first trip Mrs. Barber had made to England since she left that country In 1922. Mr. Bar ber visited there in 1937. The Barbers were accompan ied by their oldest daughter, Mrs. Leon Henderson, Portland. a Records at the archives and western history department of the University of Wyoming show Ella Watson, alias "Cattle Kate." was the first woman hanged in the territory of Wyoming. The Lewis and Clark expedi tion from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Coast and back again lasted from May, 1804, to September, 1808, and 31 men were in the official party.
