W. A. Gallahan, regional com missioner of internal revenue, said his agents contacted 8,800 tasnaver of all kinds July 30 and 31. These included corpora tions, partnerships, sole prop rietors, wage earners and others. Of the 8,800, it was found that 1.150 had failed to file at luast one nf the reauired forms. Gallahan said many taxpayers did not file two or more required forms, resulting in 1,400 delin quent returns from the 1,150 de linquent taxpayers. In Washington, Internal Rev enue Commissioner T. Coleman Andrews said the results of the survey "indicate conclusively the need for such a checkup- al ready required by law, but long neglected. Plane 'Gimmick' Said Used on Jet Fighters Columbus, O. (U.R) The Columbus Citizen said today it had learned from an Air Force publication the gimmick" that enabled American jet fighters in Korea to increase their score of MIG-15's during the final days of the Korean fighting. A new wing design with an extended leading edge replacing the conventional' slat enabled the F-86 to outspeed and out maneuver the Russian - built plane, the Scripps-Howard news paper reported. The newspaper said that it ob tained its information from the publication Flying Safety pub lished by the deputy inspector general, U.S. Air Force, Norton Air Base, San Bernardino, Calif. Camp White Member Returned by Police Car Carl C. Nicholai, 34, Camp White, was returned to camp by police car at 4:30 p.m. yesterday after police picked him up at Front st. near Main st. According to police records, Nicholai was ill when the officer discovered him. Since police said they felt he was not well enough to travel by bus, they drove him to the camp. Roof-thatching is still a lively trade in England and Wales, where today there are nearly 900 master thatchers, says the National Geographic Society. The husband, Edward M. Rothschild, was suspended from his printing office Job yesterday after he balked at similar ques tions in an appearance before McCarthy's Senate Permanent Investigating subcommittee. She identified herself as the wife of Rothschild and then, aft er consulting her attorney, also she said she was a member of a local Parents Teacher associa tion, but thereafter invoked the fifth amendment to the Consti tution and refused to answer further questions asked her. - They included an inquiry on whether she is the "educational director" of the parent-Teachers group. McCarthy injected the threat of contempt of Congress proceed ings when Mrs. Rothschild refus ed to say whether she claimed protection of fifth amendment solely because she "feared a rtuthful answer" might tend to incriminate her. McCarthy said the constitutional privilege does not protect "perjury." Cast Announced By Theater Group Final selection of the cast for "The Curious Savage," three act comedy by John Patrick, was an nounced last evening at the Med- ford Footlighters little theater at the fairgrounds, after a vigorous two-night tryout. More than 30 actors were considered for the 11 roles to be cast, and Director Frank Buchter was enthusiastic over the turnout of talent The unusual, whimsical com edy which enjoyed a long and successful run in New York is by the author of "The Hasty Heart and other well known hits. Marine Inspection Team Due Tomorrow An inspection team headed by Lt. Col. A. T. Castagna, San Francisco, officer in charge of the reserve branch of the 12th Marine corps reserve and re cruitment district, will visit the Medford recruiting office in the Post Office building tomorrow. He will be accompanied by Maj. Herb Schlosberg of public information branch, and Capt. W. E. O'Brien.-supply officer. August It. 1ISJ Communication Workers Pay Final Tribute Portland (U.R) Officials of the CIO Communication Work ers of America, from over the nation yesterday paid final re sDects here to Ernest Weaver, di rector of District 10 and a long time leader in tne union. Weaver died August 13 at Greensboro. N.C.. while on union business. He lived at Milwaukie, Ore. Heading the list of honorary nallbearers was Joieah A. Beirne, president of Communica tions Workers of America. Mexican Envoy To Cooperate on Wetback Problem Washington (U.R) Mexi can Ambassador Manuel Tello said today he would be glad to cooperate with Attorney General Herbert Brownell Jr., in efforts to stem the influx of Mexican farm laborers illegally entering the United States. He told a reporter that he would be happy to confer with Brownell about the so-called "wetback" invasion, which, Brownell said, has created "a law enforcement problem of the first magnitude" in California. Tello agreed with Brownell that border problems will not be solved until "the illegal move ment and employment of Mexi can laborers is eradicated." Mexico City. (U.R) Mexi can immigration and border au thorities were ordered today to use "extreme vigilance" along the U.S. frontier to stop the il legal flow of Mexican laborers seeking work on. American farms. Reports received here indi cated "thousands" of these Mex icans were massed at various points along the Texas and Cali fornia borders awaiting their chance to cross and get work in U.S. harvests. The government called on all immigration and border officials to use "extreme vigilance in or der to stop this exodus." Cole Holmes Addresses Meeting of Accountants R. C. vcole" Holmes was the speaker at the regular dinner meeting of Public Accountants held Monday at Eaton's Dinner House. He stated insurance goes back to early times, the Phoe nician traders having a system of their own. He then discussed the principal points of the sev eral kinds of insurance we have today. E. G. Sommer, who recently attended a meeting of the Na tional Society of Public Account ants in Portland, reported a suc cessful and informative conven tion. Skeffington, St Louis, a nationally-known op tometrist, told members of the Southern Oregon Optometric so ciety yesterday that he does not regard television as harmful to the eyes if it is used wisely. ' Now on a nation-wide tour, Dr. Skeffington spoke at a so ciety meeting at the Rogue Val ley Country club. He said that while not enough study has been made on the ef fects of TV, if used wisely he could see little risk of it causing eyesight defects. His advice was to avoid too great contrast in lighting not sit in a darkened room; to limit normal viewing to short periods preferably no more than 30 minutes at a time; not to sit too close to the screen usually a distance of six to twelve feet will te least tiring; and sun glasses should not be worn for televiewing because they adapt vision to unnatural conditions. About 3-D movies. Dr. Skef fington said they do not cause eyesight defects but may reveal a visual problem hitherto un realized. Suggesting that the in troduction of 3-D might prove a boon in revealing whether peo ple have defective vision. Dr. Skeffington said that about one- third of the audience appeared to be unhappy because they had a "visual problem." A tremen dous number of people do not know they have one poor , eye until they go to a 3-D show, he said. Marion County Town May Be Vanishing Salem U.R) The. town of Bntteville in northern Marion county may one day be no more. A request for vacation of sev eral streets and alleys in the town has been made to the Mar ion county court by Beryl and Ethel Breithaupt, who own land adjacent to the townsite. Indian Liquor Troubles Seen Less Portland (U.R) William H. Baillie, administrator for the Oregon Liquor Control Commis sion, today foresaw less trouble with the Indian drinking prob lem under a new federal law al lowing it. "Under the old laws regarding purchase and possession, the In dians would get someone else to buy liquor for him and then drink it quickly to hide it," he said. The new federal legislation does not affect Indians living on reservations. They were allowed to. purchase liquor in Oregon under legislation enacted in 1951. Baillie said the state probably would handle sale of liquor that might be dispensed on reserva tions under another bill signed into' law by President Eisenhow er. This bill allows the sale of liquor .on Indian reservations by local option. It requires that such sales be "in conformity . with the laws of the state." COAL FOR ICE CREAM Bannock, O. (U.R) Twelve- year-old Jimmy Huml went to buy an ice cream cone yesterday and got seven tons of coal in stead. Jimmy ran toward a "Good Humor" ice cream wagon in front of his home with a dime in his hand. At the same mom ent, a runaway coal truck car eened into the curb and dumped its load of fuel almost on top of the boy. Worcester. The sailor. Identified as Fred S. Lundahl, was said to have suf fered a seriously injured eye. The Coast Guard here report ed that Lundahl was picked up from the vessel yesterday. and was being ferried to Gander, Newfoundland, where he would be transferred to another plane for a flight to Boston and then to the U. S. Naval hospital at nearby Chelsea. The pickup was made 1,000 miles east of Boston. William Henry Robinson, 40, Yreka, Calif., was moved from the Medford city Jail to Jackson county jail yesterday. Robinson, who entered a plea of guilty in circuit court yesterday to a charge of burglary not in a dwelling, Is being held for sen tencing.
