Record Shipment 01 Spuds Leaves Ontario District Salem (U.R5 A 29-cent upturn in the potato market a week ago started such a rush of shipments of potatoes out of Oregon's Ontario district that 20 additional shipping point inspec tors have been sent into that area, according to W. L. Close, state supervisor for the-federalr state shipping point inspection service. The early crop moving now is chiefly whites and reds, Close said. Early russets have not yet started in volume. Records Shipments Close said V. E. Nugren, dis trict supervisor in that area, informed the Department of Ag riculture that 160 carloads of spuds were shipped out last Friday. That is an all-time high for any commodity in a single day in Oregon. The inspection service has dis patched men from Medford, Hood River, Klamath Falls, Redmond and other points to help in Malheur county: It also has sent men from the Hood Riv er and Salem district to assist in the fresh prune deal at Milton Freewater and the frozen corn deal at Ontario. Early Prunes Shipped Prune shipments moving now from the Umatilla county cen ter are the early crop. Ship ments of the main crop from that section will get under way about August 24, or at the same time Barlett pear harvests open up at Medford and Hood River. Garden Notes Bt C B. MM MEDFORD (OREOOH) MAIL TBZBUSaV-VXTK Where daffodils, tulips and similar bulb plants need to be dug and divided now would be a good time to do it. These bulbs will need to be dug only when they become crowded and do not blossom well. As soon as they are dug they can be separated and replanted, being sure that they are not exposed to the hot sun during the process. Only those bulbs which fall apart easily should be separated. Where the bulb 'is only partly divided and does not separate easily it should be replanted without being divided. For home use, where blossoms are desired and increase in bulbs I is not essential, they should be planted about 10 inches deep. The deeper they are planted the less often they will need to be divided. As these bulbs require a good drainage it is desirable to mix considerable sand with our heavier soils immediately around the bulb. Before replant ing the bulb beds should be deep ly spaded and three pounds of a complete fertilizer added to each 10 by 10 foot area. The narcissus bulb fly fre quently is very destructive. There has been no good control for this pest until recently. Some northern investigators have found that by soaking the bulb in a chlordane solution before planting that excellent control was obtained. These results have been verified locally by Louis Gentner, entomologist at South ern Oregon Experiment Station. This treatment consists of soak ing the bulbs for from 10 min utes to an hour in a solution con taining a heaping tablespoon of 40 per cent Chlordane in a gal lon of water. Roseburg Plumber Killed in Accident Roseburg (U.R) A 56-year-old Roseburg plumber was killed late yesterday when the walls of a sewer in which he was work ing collapsed. The victim, Paul Caskey, for merly a mechanic in the Union garage here, was pronounced dead at 2:07 p.m. Rescuers had dug feverishly for two hours to save him. Another man, Don Addis, leaped from the sewer ditch to safety as shoring began to give way. Caskey was working in a 15-foot-deep ditch on the construc tion site of the new Winston school, about eight miles south of here.
