(lnUmaUc-nal SoundpKou) Eisenhower Better Than Hoppy, Young Cancer Victim Says Denver (U.R) President Eisenhower called at a modest suburban home here yesterday to cheer up a six-year-old boy dying of cancer and received In return the plucky boy's highest accolade the president was better than Hopalong Cassidy. The president arrived at the home of the youngster, Paul Henry Haley, about 10 a.m. after a secret service man had checked to tee hathe had the right house, the president walked to the front door, knocked and asked: Father Apologises "Is Paul here? I came to see him." Donald Haley. Paul's father, caught his breath and said: "Mr. President. I hope you'll pardon my appearance, please come in." The president had read about the youngster in the Rocky Mountain News. A reporter wrote that the boy. who has a cancer that is rapidly spreading through his blood vessels and bones, would rather see "Ike" than Hopalong Cassidy "or any other cowboy." Blue Jeans "I was completely chargrined when I realized that Mr. Eisen hower had come out," Haley said. "I was in the back yard playing ball with my other boys. and I had on blue jeans, an old shirt and I needed a shave. What a way to meet the president of the United States!" Haley has four other boys and a daughter. Paul and two of the other sons were in the back yard with their father when the president arrived, but Mrs. Haley, one son and the daughter had gone for a drive. "Paul heard the knock on our door and wandered into the liv ing room." Haley said. "But when he saw the president he Firing Projectiles At Moon in Plans Pasadena. Calif. TJJ9 A well known astro-physicist today re 1 vealed plans for firing small pro jectiles at the moon and planets in an attempt to learn the se crets of outer space. Dr. Fritz Zwicky, California Institute of Technology scientist who discovered supernovae ex ploding stars, said he needed only $10,000 to finance the ex periments. The experiments would in volve remote control firing of projectiles the size of revolver bullets from balloons 20 miles or more above the earth's surface. Communist Koreans End Slate of War Tokyo 0I.PJ Communist North Korea today proclaimed the end of a state of war in Ko rea and called off military mo bilization. Pyongyang radio said the North Korean Peoples Supreme Council rescinded, effective to day, the declaration of war made June 27. 1950 and the general mobilization order of July 1, 1950. TO ASK BIDS Portland M.fO The Portland district Army Engineers an nounced Saturday it will invite bids August 18 for manufacture and delivery of seven pieces of electrical equipment for the Dex ter reregulating dam which is part of the Lookout Point dam project on the Middle Fork of the Willamette river. Two Persons Die In Pre-Dawn Fire In San Francisco San Francisco U.FD Two merchant seamen were killed in a-pre-dawn fire today that swept through the old frame St. Johns hotel-apartment on Polk st. and fire investigators checked the possibility of arson. At least 11 of the 88 occu pants of the building were treat ed for smoke inhalation and five firemen were treated for minor injuries. Lt George Kelley 4n charge of the arson squad, said the "fire might have been set" It was the third fire in the last three week in the old building, built after the 1906 earthquake and fire. Four Alarm Blase All three of the fires appar ently 'started in hallways, al though the first two fires were not reported until today. Kelley said. Killed in the fire were Hiram Kolomoku, 56, who lived on the top floor of the four story build ing, and Christiano Surez, 43, both of San Francisco. The fire broke out about 4:45 a.m. PDT. Firemen managed to bring it under control within a half hour, using 30 pieces of equipment. One hundred and eighty men answered the four alarms. Five shops on the street floor i were badly damaged by water. Officials estimated the total damage at between' $40,000 and $50,000. Tells of Escape Father Leo Paulson gave the last rites of the Catholic church to the dead on the street outside the hotel. Mrs. Bob Eller, one of the ten ants, said the noise of the flames awoke her. She said she and her husband jumped out their ground floor window into the backyard. They were trapped there by a high fence. Licensed Power Projects Exempt From Recapture Denver (U.R) President Eisenhower Saturday 6igned leg islation exempting federally lic ensed power projects, owned by state or municipal agencies from the recapture provision of the federal water 'power act. The new act also is expected to reduce the annual charges paid by those projects to the Federal Power commission. Price Set The federal water power law contains a formula setting a price at which the federal gov ernment could take over fed erally licensed projects includ ing those owned by state and municipalities, at the end of a 50-year period. Congressional sponsors of the bill signed today said this pro vision interfered with the sale of bonds to finance the projects. Hence the measure would ex empt the state and municipal projects from the liability for sale to the federal government although the national g6vern ment still could take them over by condemnation proceedings. Another, provision would per mit the Federal Power commis sion to charge the projects only for services actually performed. Reduced bookkeeping from the exemption from the recapture provision is expected to lower these charges. The change also will permit the projects to discontinue some of the bookeeping and account ing procedures which they have been required to follow. TUT. TUTi Tampa, Fla. flJ.R) Robert B. HIGHER PRICES SEEN Washington U.R) The Agri culture Department said today American wool growers prob ably will receive slightly higher prices this season. Foreign Aid May Be Maintained for Long Time To Come Washington w (U.R) The Elsenhower administration told Congress today that foreign aid is a "high-yielding investment in national safety," which the United States, may have to main tain for a long time. "The lange range' " nature of the miulti-billion dollar mutual security program was heavily emphasized in a report prepared by Harold E. Stassen's Foreign Operations administration and forwarded to Congress by Presi dent Eisenhower. The report, required by law, covered foreign aid operations during the first six months of this year. Intangible Expression In his two-paragraph letter of transmittal, Mr. Eisenhower said only that the aid program is a "tangible expression of our be lief that the safety and self in terest of this nation are inex tricably tied in with the security and well being of other nations." The report itself went further and directly challenged the views of the powerful Republi can congressional bloc which has been demanding an early ter mination of the costly aid pro gram. No Evidence Declaring that the United States is still "seriously threat ened by Soviet military and pol itical expansionism," it said: "There is no real evidence that this threat has diminished or will diminish within the fore seeable future . . . Mutual sec urity planning must be of a long range nature. We simply cannot aim for a fixed target by a fixed date."
