FROST'S POETRY BOOK SAID VALUABLE It is a common complaint that the grass only looks greener in the next pasture and really isn't And while this is Drob- i gj 11 ably true for t uKi most cows and r. I " a lot of people, lJ ; ' including poets, it appar ently did not nrove so for Robert Frost, considered by many to be the finest poet America has produced so far in this century. For Frost and regardless of the rank you grant him, he has won the Pulitzer prizes for poetry, 1924 and 1930 had his first two books published in England. In other words, this native San Franciscan who has lived most of his life in the East and who has turned out enough poet ry to fill a freightcar, almost, was accepted by the British well before his countrymen would give him a break. How much money he has made out of his poetry is another matter. But whatever it is, it hasn't been enough to start many writers turning out verse In the hope of making a living out of it. The general impression is that writing poetry is still a luxury, still practically worth less when it comes to turning an honest dollar in quantity. Nonetheless, there is money in poetry if you recognize it when you see it, and Frost's poetry is a good example. Take his first book, published in London. The name of it is "A Boy s Will." It is dated London 1913. If you come across a copy with that date, and it is bound in pebbled bronze cloth, you have an item tnat is worth all the way up to $380. But if your copy doesn't have that binding and is bound in white parchment, stamped in rea; or nas duii wrappers stamp ed in black with an A bearing a horizontal rule; or just a plain a aon't reel too badly about it. The book is still worth a fair amount, from $10 up, say. Furthermore, the first Ameri can edition once the English had brought out the book, the Americans quickly got onto it bearing the dateline New York, 1915, has a value ranging up to $35. There's a point to look for in the American first edition, though. It's in the last line on Page 14. It consists of the word "aind," a mistake for the con junction "and." Harking back to my grammar days, I shouldn't end a sentence with "and" much less a para graph, so I've added these few words to end this column with.
