(International Soundptwto) Refrigerator Door Locks Taking Heavy Toll of Children Lives, Spokesman States Washington (U.R) -- A I spokesman for the refrigeration : Industry warned Saturday that j abandoned refrigerators will take a heavy toll of child lives ' In the next several years unless certain simple preventive meth jods are universally adopted, t The spokesman, President C. j W. Phillips of the Refrigeration : Trade Association, said this dan- j ger will become steadily great- ; er for at least five years even if ; every refrigerator maker start- ed using trap-proof latches to- . morrow. ' Educational Program . Phillips has called a meeting i of industry representatives here ' Tuesday night at which to dis cuss safety latches and at the same time launch a public edu cational program to prevent the tragedies he said are otherwise almost bound to occur. Public attention has been riveted on the refrigeration - menace this week by 11 child deaths in three states over a ' period of a day and a half. But Phillips said the industry has been aware of the problem for many years. In the past five years, according to newspaper records alone, more than 100 children have suffocated in lock ed refrigerators, he said. Engineers have exhaustively - studied the latch problem, Phil lips said, and have concluded that the most feasible solution, one which would not add great- ly to a refrigerator's cost or in- COME IN AND GET ACQUAINTED! Self-Locking Doors The villain in the great ma jority of cases, he said, has been the door that locks when it slams shut. For engineering and physo logical reasons, Phillips said, a door that could be opened from the inside by pressure or by a built-in safety device would not be feasible. ' But whatever kind of safety latch the industry comes up with, the great menace for years will remain the discard ed refrigerator, according to Phillips. Contribution Valid At Friday afternoon's final business session, Forrest Cooper, counsel for the association, said the legality of the Oregon con tribution from county funds to support the association had been tested and found valid in the Oregon Supreme Court. His statement came after an editorial in the Bend Bulletin by Robert W. Sawyer questioning the legal ity of the Interstate association. The Supreme Court was closed Saturday, but observers here ex pressed belief the decision must have concerned the legality of contributions to the Oregon as sociation rather than the Inter state association Cooper said a bill introduced in Congress was similar to one drawn up by the stockmen. For mer Gov. Charles A. Sprague in his column "It Seems to Me" to day said "Cooper endeavored to link President Eisenhower to the stockmen's bill by a rather cir cuitous route. Cites Message Citing the President's general message on resource conserva tion of July 30th and then the bill S 2548 Introduced by Sen ator Aiken dealing with grazing in national forests. Cooper gave the imnression that this Aiken bill was very similar to the D'- fcwart bill, and that it followed out the Eisenhower recommend ations; and he quoted Senator Barrett, the Wyoming 'Abraham' as praising the Aiken bill. "The facts are that Aiken in troduced two bills on Aug. 1. One was S 2548 which in the brief time I have had for ex amining it seems quite different irom the D'Ewart bill. The other, S 2549, dealt with co operation between the federal government and local agencies on matters of soil conservation and flood prevention. Commends Aiken It was the latter bill which Sen. Barrett referred to in his remarks save at the conclusion he remarked: 'I want to com mend the distinguished apnatnr from Vermont for proposing both of the bills.' Barrett gave no in timation that he would support the Aiken version of a bill cov ering forest grazing permits." Others had criticized the as sociation for taking a stand in what they said was not the con cern of counties. For instance, Fred Schneider of Colorado spoke at some length on the al location of waters from the Col orado, Rio Grande and Platte rivers. It was pointed out that this is a matter of concern on the state, and not the county, level. Propose Commission Jim Stearns of Modoc county, Calif., said the Northern Cali fornia Association of Public Land Counties plans to propose that a commission of three be created to study all lands held by the federal government, out aide of national parka and for ests, to determine whether they should be retained as public lands or diverted to private use, Two of the commissioners would be appointed by the presi dent and one by the governor of California. He said counties are having a hard time financing their governments because so much land has been acquired by the federal government and is off the tax rolls. F. L. Vegetarian writers continue to refer to those who do not agree with their diet ideas as "flesh eaters." The trouble with most vegetarians is that they are in tolerant. They are not satisfied to outline what they believe the benefits or their meatless diet to be. They have to get nasty about it. Incidentally, the great Arctic explorer Vilhjalmur Ste fansson lived for several years on a diet of meat. He grew healthy eating nothing but meat No vegetables whatsoever. For years, the turf enthu siasts of New York City have patiently endured the outrageous conditions prevailing at the anti quated Jamaica and Aqueduct race tracks. Now they have re belled. Thousands of New York turf fans have been traveling far out to New Jersey daily to patronize the superbly managed Monmouth Park race track, where consideration for the com fort of the customers prevails. Even though you haven't the slightest interest in horse racing, I feel certain you will find a revolt against bad service and shabby treatment of customers most refreshing. Let's have more such rebellions in other lines. Mules and Men To hand is a communication from a subscriber who resents my criticism of men who wear fency colored shirts hanging out side their trousers. He says he likes to wear his shirts that way and suggests that I stop picking on him and others who affect the style. My criticism is intend ed to be constructive. I do not propose to abandon it. Wearing a shirt outside of trousers makes a man look sloppy. Reason many men g for the style is because it makes a "corporation" or bulge in the middle less promi nent If these fellows, who are so fat in the middle, wore their shirts properly, perhaps they would do something about re ducing their "corporations." McAndrew has 10 children, all born by Cae sarean sect f on. All single births. Waiting Unless very recently picked up, there is by the side of United States Highway Number 91 near Cedar City, Utah, a cocker spaniel apparently waiting for the return of his folks. When strangers approach, this dog runs away only to return later to re sume his watchful waiting. He tias been there four months. Un less his folks come to get him he probably will stay there by the side of the road until he dies. Do you know anybody who has lost a cocker spaniel on an auto mobile trip. M. U.R3 Funeral arrangements were pending Sat urday for Gouveneour Morris, 77, noted novelist and great grandson of one of the Cramers of the United States Constitu tion. Morris died here Friday after a heart attack. The former Monterey, Calif., bank president was stricken Thursday night at his home near Coolidge, in the western New Mexico Navajo country. Lived At Ranch Since moving from California 14 years ago, he had lived at the ranch of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Newcomb. ' Morris is a descendant of Gou veneour Morris, a general in the Revolutionary War and one of the men who wrote the nation's Constitution. Among his better known nov els were "Tiger Island," "We Three," 'Tom Beauling," and "Pagan's Progress," although be wrote many others. Scene of Inquiry Morris' home in Manhattan Beach, Calif., was the center of a criminal investigation in 1936 when Reid Russell, a close friend of his second wife, was found shot to death on the front porch.
