Three Aim for Point Lead at County Speedway Tonight Tnnlirht at the Jackson County Speedway in Medf ord, the hottest bardtops In this area gather for an evening of racing, roaring engines and screaming tires. The special event, always a thriller, will be made up of the fastest cars and drivers of the season, out to prove that they really de serve the tile of race drivers. Point standings are so closely grouped that either Elmer Sise more in M46 or Bob Wilcox in Mil could move Into the first position now held by Bernie Mil ler. Bernie has no idea of letting up on the throttle and losing that, hardwon first place but Cecil James thinks that he ought to be back in that position. Sudden Sid Budden is slated for another appearance and this time Sid says that he will stay out of trouble and a long way out in front of the pack. Besides the queen, six princesses made up the Royal Gladolians at the Josephine county fairgrounds. The program also Included the 30-voice festival chorus, as well as many dignitaries. Queen contest Judges were five members from the Medford Active club. They Included Jack Cummings, Russell QeForest, Ray Hlslng, Bud Palmer and Robert DeGroot Federal Tax Laws Claimed Antiquated Washington U.R) Chairman Daniel A. Reed, (R-N.Y.), said today six weeks of hearings by the tax framing House Ways and Means committee have shown federal laws to be unfair, confusing and antiquated. He said a top to bottom tax re vision bill will be the "first or der of business" before his com mittee in the new session of Congress starting Jan. 9. While the committee will postpone decisions on most of the major tax reform issues until next year. Reed said it has al ready "tentatively" agreed on two changes. One would give a better- tax break to parents whose dependent children have part time jobs; the other -would simplify the system of filing quarterly declarations of esti mated tax. Hospital Plane Grounded by Weather Andrews ATB, Md. (U.B A hospital plane carrying eight re cently released Korean war pris oners to Eastern hospitals was grounded today in the Midwest because of bad weather on the East Coast. A spokesman at Andrews Air Forse Base, outside Washington, said the plane was ordered to stay at Scott Air Force Base, 111., until conditions cleared. The morning was drizzly and gusty in the Washington area, conditions attributed to the tropi cal hurricane Barbara whirling along the Virginia capes some 200 miles distance.- French, Rebel Forces Renew Hostilities Luang Prabang, Laos (U.R) Renewed fighting has broken out between French forces and Communist- rebels in Laos, French headquarters reported today. Patrol action was reported in all sectors of this remote moun tain kingdom of Indo-China. French officers feared the recur rent patrol incidents might her ald a renewal in September of last winter's Communist invas ion that reached the gates of this royal capital. Son of Local Couple Returns From Korea Capt. Reed A Gallier, Jr., son of Mr. and Mrs. Reed A. Gallier Sr., Camp White, who arrived in Seattle last week from Korea and Japan with his wife and four-year-old son Stephen, will be in Medford Saturday to visit his parents. It will be Captain Gallier'a first time home in three years. His wife and son have been with him in Japan for a year and a half. Captain Gallier will report to Fort Lewis Sept 4, where he will be the claims officer. New Assistant Engineer A Camp White Named Camp White Manager Eu gene K. Ricker announced today that Joe W. Smith will assume the duties of assistant engineer starting Monday, August 17. He is arriving this week from Ft Bayard VA hospital. ' The position was vacated last month when Al Burman was ad vanced to the position of en gineering officer at the VA hos pital, Saginaw, Mich. Britain Having Tough Time Finding Mate for Margaret As Sho Approaches Age 23 London - UJ0 Princess Margaret reaches the ripe age of 23, that's old for unmarried royalty, a week from today and this nation of unofficial match makers is having a tough time picking a -suitable mate. The earl and Margaret once were said by friends to have an "understand- State Highway Fund Apportioned to Cities Salem (U.R) Apportionment of $2,136,134.79 to the cities of Oregon out of the state highway fund was announced today by Secretary of State Earl T. Newbry. The amount represents 10 per cent of the net revenues to the state highway fund during the six months ended June 30, from motor vehicle license fees, gas oline taxes, motor carrier fees and motor vehicle violation fies. Fair Exhibitors Seek Record Space Salem (U.R) Exhibitors have contracted for 25 per cent more space than ever before for the 1953 Oregon State fair here, John R. Kelly, fair space man ager, said today. A new feature of the fair, which opens 9tpt 5 for an eight day run, will be a display of house trailers. The fair says it will be the largest ever as sembled in the Pacific North west. Farm machinery and equip ment displays will take more than twice as much space as last year, with a value of more than a million dollars. All told, some 300 commercial and non-commercial exhibitors will stage shows and demonstrations. Motor Scooter and Automobile Collide A collision involving an auto mobile and a motor scooter took place at the intersection of Main and Front sts. Wednesday, ac cording to police records. The car, driven by Lee Roy Applegate, 406 Clark St., Med ford, was going east on East Main in the left lane of traffic. As he reached the intersection he turned left and struck the left rear fender of a scooter driven by Lloyd C. Linhard, 1762 South each st., Medford, police said. No one was injured and no citations were issued. This epic also stars Aly Khan. Since Rita Anne Mosey now Is romanc ing Dick Haymes, an immigrant in hot water for jumping the border, she wants no part of any movie co-starring her with Aly. But a Philadelphia com pany is busy editing the picture, and unless Rita comes up with a lawsuit, the movie will grace the theaters. Sells Out The movie "Champagne Sa fari," was filmed by Rita's busi ness manager, Jackson Leighter, when Rita and Aly went lion hunting in Africa three years ago. "I sold the company my In terest in the picture and have nothing to do with it now, for personal reasons," Leighter said. "The film can't show one foot of Rita or her studio will sue." The film shows the handsome Prince Aly plowing through darkest Africa in a pith helmet Following him are several truck loads of champagne. OLCC Nearing End of Liquor-by-Drink Permits Portland (U.R) The Oregon Liquor, Control Commission fteared the end of its massive chore of licensing liquor-by-the-drink places today. The Commission said dispen ser licenses approved, or due to be approved, now total 88 per cent of the quota set by the Commission. 4-H Forestry Club The Valley View forestry club left for our overnight camping trip Aug. 8 There were 18 mem bers attending, along with our leaders, Mr. and Mrs. Pete Ros enbom. While at camp we collected specimens for our exhibit board. We also studied different trees and filled out record books Other parents attending were Mrs. Lucile Scott and Mr. and Mrs. Sam James.
