(lAttrnatunuU Soundphoto) Mental Scars Left On Returned Captives, Psychiatrist Asserts Inchon, Korea (U.R) An Army psychiatrist said today that long confinement in Communist camps had put deep scars in the minds of many American pris oners returning to freedom. Maj. Henry K. A. Segal of Philadelphia, chief psychiatrist at this port of embarkation, said the liberated prisoners are still in a dream world. Readjustments will be diffi cult, Segal said, because the prisoners now have little sense of reality. "On the other hand, they may be able to work off this locked up emotion," Segal said. Hero Complex He said the Communist indoc trination has created a problem that did not exist for prisoners held in World War II. "Men in prison camp live a fantasy," Segal said. The psychiatrist said some of the men have a hero complex which will make it difficult for them to adjust to their new sur roundings after the back slap ping is over. , "This is reflected in such things as the small amount of hostility the repatriates hold toward their Chinese captors," Segal said. Main MedfortJ He said many of the prisoners think of themselves and their families in terms of what they were before the war and not as they may be now. Most returning prisoners are hazy about their future and do not seem particularly anxious to go home. A great number want to stay in the Army for the se curity it offers, he said. Segal voiced fear that when the prisoner reaches home and finds that the Korean war did not have the unanimous support of the American people and was looked upon with apathy by many he might think his time in captivity had been wasted. Thieves Break Open Pin Ball Machines Brown's Billiard parlors, 101 East Main st., was broken into last night and an undetermined amount of money taken from three pin ball machines and a record playing machine, accord ing to city police. The robbery took place some time between 12:30 a.m. and 2:15 a.m. The loss was dis covered by Ivan Thomas Gil man, 1705 South Columbus St., who was notified when it was noticed that the night lights us ually left on were out. Entry was gained by breaking out a portion of the glass in the door and reaching through to unlock the door from the inside. A hammer was used to pry the front off the machines from which money was taken. Posse Loses Hope 01 Catching Two Dangerous Convicts , Adairsville, Ga. (U.R) A weary but watchful posse re traced, its steps across the North Georgia hills today as hope faded that two armed, dangerous con victs who killed a deputy U. S. marshal and kidnapped a second guard were still in the vicinity. "We ought to know something today," C. W; Carson, special agent in charge of the Atlanta effice of the FBI, said but he added that there were "no new developments" yet. Area Criss-Crosced Some 200 heavily armed FBI agents, highway patrolmen and local officers aided by blood hounds and airborne searchers have been criss-crossing the thickly wooded hills since Sat urday, hunting for a trace of the fugitives, Herbert E. Jeulich, 25, and Lewis W. Larson, 31, both of St. Paul. Being Taken to Prison The two men, described as "dangerous and vicious," pumped five bullets into the body of deputy marshal, Sam E. Vaugh, 54, as he and guard George High tower, 30, were taking them from Nashville, Tenn., to the Atlanta federal penitentiary after their conviction on auto theft charges. The California Institute of Technilogy has installed in a nearby mountain tunnel a 79-foot-long "earth strain meter" made of fused quartz tubing and designed, to last 100 years. Connected To Pier The giant horizontal guage is connected at one end to a concrete pier extending deep into the rock floor. The other end can swing free and thus is J sensitive 10 viDrauons 01 ine earth. Dr. Hugh Benioff, institute seismologist hopes the device will indicate earth strains of one part in 100,000,000. Thl is approximately a 1-1000 inch squeeze in two miles of rock or, for example, a one- inch com pression between here and New York. Might Indicate Strains He said the one $35,000 meter could not do a complete job of forecasting quakes, but that if it proved itself a scattered net work of some 50 meters might compile enough data to indicate when strains get to a breaking or earthquake point. Dr. Benioff believes quakes occur only after a certain point of stress has been reached. With the 50 meters placed throughout the state, preferably in pairs at right angles to each other, the seismologist said pre diction as to time and place of quakes would be closer to a reality. Benioff said the ultimate cost of a network might reach $5, 000,000. . The tunnel ' itself is located near big Dalton dam a little more than five miles from near by Glendora. Rhee, in a statement issued by the ROKt government in dicated that he expects United Nations military help if the forthcoming political conference fails to unify Korea. "It has been agreed that in the event the political confer ence fails to unify Korea after three months, the 16 United Na tions, including the United States, will join in an effort to achieve unification by other means." Rhee said; however, that there was "no definite commitment" that the 16 Allied nations would resume the Korean war. "If we succeed in the politi cal conference, it would be really fortunate," Rhee said, "and if not we will have suf fered no great damage. Our ob jective unification will have a chance to be achieved with the help from our Alliea." Emanuel Celler, (D-N.Y.), charged yesterday that the House un - American Activities com: cdist was "like a Russian purge." "It was a shame and a dis grace to American decency," he said. "The record of the hear ings of that committee indicated that it was replete with errors and lies." Charge Mad in Debate Celler made the charge dur ing a debate with Sen. Karl Mundt, (R-S.D.). Subject of the debate was a bill introduced by Celler to turn all subversive in vestigations over to a single joint committee. Mundt defended the investi gation of Bishop Oxnam. "Good must have flown from that in vestigation," he said, "because it took out of the area of the shadow the exaggerated ' state ments and charges and pushed them down before a committee where they were' taken up care fully and he was cleared of his Communist connection." Bishop Oxnam, a long - time critic of the committee, appeared before it at his own request last month after one of its members, Rep. Donald Jackson, (R-Calif.), charged that Rev. Oxnam "serves God on Sundays and Communist causes the balance of the week."
