Before long a weary and more or less gloomy Congress will close up shop and the members will head for home. It is always a little discouraging to hear a Congressional recess referred to as a "vacation." The fact is that a member of Congress generally has less time to him ?lf when he is home In his state r district than when he is In Washington, attending the ses sion. We do not complain about this because it is a part of the job, and a pleasant part, but a recess certainly is not a vacation. I referred to this1 Congress as being gloomy. There are two very different sets of reasons for that condition. First and fore most, the sudden passing of Sen ator Robert A. Taft of Ohio cast a deep sadness over the closing hours of this session. Senator Taft was genuinely liked, ad mired, and respected by every member of Congress. He was a tower of strength to the Eisen hower Administration and was truly "Mr. Republican" in the Senate and in the country. The death o Senator Taft followed within a few days the passing cf Senator Tobey ol new mmp snire, also a respected and popu lar Senator. During the less than seven months since this session began four other Senators and Repre sentatives have died, including Senator Willis Smith of North Carolina; Representatives Joseph Bryson of South Carolina, Gar rett L. Withers of Kentucky, and Merlin Hull of Wisconsin. The Congress with a total member ship in House and Senate of 531 is a relatively small body num erically. These men all were our friends and we miss them. The other basis for a lack of enthusiasm lies in the nature of the work which had to be done during this session. It is far more pleasant to spend money lavishly than it is to pinch pen nies and save. This session of Coneress is the first one in many years to crack down sharply and heavily on budget requests. u knocked almost 20 oer cent (one- fifth) off the post-election Tru man budget. But even so. and to further dampen any feeling of cheerful ness, it has not yet been possible to nrovide any tax relief. This vill come at the end of this year., Then to ton off the financial slory, one of the last acts of this session was to face the necessity cf raising the legal debt limit of the Federal treasury. Althougn that actually amounts to little more than a legal tecnnicaiixy, it did serve to point out force fully that the Eisenhower Ad ministration inherited a flock of tills which must be paid before government finances can be put on a sound basis and taxes re duced. The situation we took ever was something like that of a person who buys a quit claim deed to a business and then has to mortgage the proper ty in order to get rid of the liens and old debts which are pre sented to him for payment. This, I believe, is the last "Letter from Washington" for this year. I do not expect a spec ial session to be called, so unless that does happen I will not be writing from Washington again until Congress convenes its sec ond session in January. Mean while, after about the 20th of August, we will be at home in Roseburg at home, that is, un less I am visiting the seven coun ties in the Fourth District. I hope to spend at least a week in each county. Pythian Organization Sets Picnic at Grants Pass Park A regional picnic for the Knights of Pythias, Pythian sis ters, D.O.K.K. and Nomads, and their guests, will be held at the Grants Pass Caveman park, next Sunday, August 9. Members from Medford, Yreka. Klamath Falls, Roseburg, and Grants Pass are Invited. A potluck dinner will be served at 1:30 p.m. with coffee, cream and ice cream provided. Each family is asked to bring their own "potluck" and their own service. George Bryant and Edward Bostwick of Medford are in charge of entertainment and games. There will be swimming in the Rogue river. Boy scouts who are sponsored by the Knights of Pythias lodges, and their families, have been in vited and a special report will be given on the recent Scout Jam boree held in California.
