(U.R) Indian lights and stage coach robberies arent just something out of a novel lor Louis P. Wilson. 87. He was actually in on some of them and helped spread the news about them. He wanted to get better ac quainted with the Indians when he was 19, so he Joined a French- Canadian regiment and went out to beat down Louis Riel's rebel lion of half-breeds against the Dominion government. Marched in 10 Weather The year was 1885. "We walked along the edge of ice-bound Lake Superior, carry ing full equipment; knapsack, haversack, two blankets and 12-pound gun," he recalled. "We wore greatcoats because it was 10 degrees below zero. Some times we ate frozen bread." Wilson talked with Riel be fore he was hanged and helped to embalm the body. "Riel shouldn't have been hanged," he said. "He honestly wanted to help the Indians, be cause he thought they were be ing robbed of their lands." Wilson traveled in the Old West by stagecoach and support ed himself by doing free-lance writing for newspapers. He made one trip from Portland to San Francisco by wagon that took four months. Wore SUk Hat as Editor "I was a passenger in a stage coach when highwaymen made off with $80,000 in gold that was being taken to a bank," he said. In 1889 I was editor of the Seattle Weekly Star. Silk hat and cane were part of my cos tume. "The fire of 1889 wiped out my business. Later ,in 1906, I lust missed another big fire. I had left San Francisco the night before the great disaster." Wilson's wife died last year. He has two children, five grand children and eight great grandchildren. v . 11 Mini aiiiwilMliiiiwiii 1 lli in in im !! nil mii mm n III II misTs TDKQNQ TOWARD QTJkSTIONXK, Gov. James T. Spider Ancestors Dominated Earth Washington (U.R) Ancestors of the lowly spider were the dominant creatures of the earth half a billion years ago. But their 20th century cousins have seen the light. At least they can bask in the sun instead of crawling along the muddy bot tom of the sea? These ancient predecessors, known as trilobites, left their mark for posterity because they were covered by a hard shell, impressions of which have been found in fossils. According to Dr. Chriflina Lochman of Chicago, who has recently completed a study of this era, the shell of the trilo bite was both a protection and a hazard. It covered only the back of the animal, leaving the ventral side which normally dragged along the soft mud highly vulnerable if the creature was rolled over by a wave or a larger animal. Dr. Lochman believes the tri lobites were sea bottom scaven gers. They were equipped with short legs and antennae and pushed their way in a sinuous manner along the sea's bottom or burrowed in the soft mud in quest of dead or dying organ isms. They fed themselves by push ing their prey toward their mouths with their feet, assisted perhaps, by the water current The present-day spider has come a long way. Teachers Find Parents Problem Carbondale, HI. (U.R) Par ents are among the biggest prob lems teachers of mentally handi capped children face, an Illinois social worker believes. Mrs. Mary Aken, psychiatric social worker for the Illinois Institute for Juvenile Research, Chicago, outlined for teachers studying at Southern Illinois University here some of the At titudes of parents Of mentally- retarded children. She said parents of the handi capped child may: 1. Feel the child is punishment for their past sins. This involves deep-rooted emotion nearly im possible for a teacher to cope with unaided by specialists. 2. Be completely unaware of their child's handicap since they always have played up his abil ities and ignored his limitations, 3. Blame others for their child's inability to achieve by saying, "my child is smart enough, but his teachers are no good." 4. Sacrifice themselves and their other children so family life may revolve around the re tarded child. 5. Over-protect their young ster and keep him from develop ing abilities he possesses. 6. Reject or be cruel to their retarded child because they feel defeated in trying to help him. Mrs. Aken said teachers must try to understand what it means to be a parent of a retarded child and be sympathetic with parents who need constructive assistance rather than criticism. ability to roll into a ball when attacked a defense mechanism its early hard-shelled ancestors might have found handy.
