Oakland 5-2 San Francisco U.R The seat cushion vendors were on easy street today and the Port land Beavers were a game out of fourth place in the Pacific Coast League as a result of yes terday's 22-inning victory over San Francisco in the Butcher town ball yard. After four hours and 20 min utes of top notch pitching by both clubs, the Bevos leU upon Ted Shandor for two runs in the 22nd frame and that was enough to wrap up a 4-2 verdict la the battle for fourth spot. It was the first 22-inning af fair to be recorded in the coast league oooks since 1928 when Sacramepto got involved witn Oakland in a marathon fuss. Want 14 Frames The big guy of yesterday's game was Portland's Royce Lint, who went 14 innings before stepping aside for Red Adams. Larry Ward, who came on in the 20th got the victory. Hollywood retained its six game lead over Seattle by trim ming Sacramento 4-3 while the Suds were defeating Los Ange les in 10 innings, 8-7. San Diego clumped Oakland into the cellar, drubbing the Acorns in a twin bill, 6-3 and 5-2. Max West, who has been out of the lineup for most of the sea son with an injury, smashed a home run in the ninth to tie the game for L.A. Broke The Tie But the Rainiers helped Al Widmar win another when Gordie Brunswick singled home Artie Wilson with the tie breaker in the tenth. Dale Long clubbed his 25th homer in the eighth inning to give Hollywood the one run it needed to veto the Senators. Charlie Schanz threw the gopher ball and got the defeat. Bill Howerton slammed his 23rd of the year in San Diego with two Acorns on the bags but even that wasn't enough to halt the Oaks' slide into the base ment. Howerton's clout came in the first game against Willie Luna and that was all they could do against the southpaw from Tacubaya. Rotarians Set Golf Tourney Pairings for the first round of the Medford Rotary club golf tournament were announced to day by Chairman Bob Corbin. The tourney is now under way, with finals slated for the week of Sept. 8. There are 11 byes in the first round due to the fact that in match play golf the matches must be in number divisible by eight and there are 21 entries, Corbin said. ' The first matches must be completed by Tuesday, Aug. 12. W r r-i Chris Drugs of Jacksonville outslugged Mobilgas to take a 15 to 14 victory in 10 innings in a Medford Softball association game at the high school field last night. Mobilgas pitchers added 14 walks to Chris' 10 hits to aid in the victory. In the seventh inning of the extra-frame affair. Don Wendt, catcher for the druggists, hit a fly ball to center field where it was dropped allowing three runs to cross the plate and tie up the game. In the other half of the twin bill, YMCA poured it on Na tional Guard to the tune of 1Z to 4. The winners gathered 13 hits while the losers could accu mulate but four. Don Basey, pitching for the YMCA, was injured in a slide into third base, in the fifth in ning and had to leave the game. He suffered a possible fractured ankle. Games tonight will send the Grants Pass Lumberjacks against an association all-star team, starting about 7:45 p.m. The second game will pit Chris Drugs against Eagle Point in a battle for fourth place. Friday night Lithia Motors will meet the winner of the Eagle Point-Chris Drugs game, start ing at 7:30 p.m. in the first round of the league playoffs. The sec ond game sends Andy's Jewel ers against YMCA. Winners of the two games will tangle Fri day night for the right to play Grants Pass Lumberjacks. Mangrum Says Hogan Praise Is Hogwash' Chicago U.R) Lloyd Man grum, golfdom's top money win ner of all time, said today that some of the praise being heaped on Bantam Ben Hogan is "hog-wash." Mangrum, who sought his sec ond "world championship" today at Tam O'Shanter Country Club, where he has won the "All Amer ican" open three times, said statements that Hogan is the greatest golfer in the world "make me a little sick, "Sure, Hogan's a fine player," Mangrum said. "But he's a long way from the best golfer that ever picked up a club. "Just let him play on the tour with the rest of us week in and week out and he'll place eighth or ninth occasionally and it wouldn't surprise me if he fin ished out of the money once in a while. Hospitalized, but not regarded in serious condition, was a man identified as William Sherman Wells Jr.. Portland. Sheriffs deputies, alerted by a man who saw someone enter ing the market, chased Wells from the establishment. Wells fled in an old truck, but finally abandoned it and took off on foot That was when Sgt. Garth Stackhouse stopped him with two bullets from his revolver. Market owner John Selling said the burglar got only $4 in pennies. Gold is my business," he said, "just like the boy that goes to the office. Fighters Await Bell Tomorrow For Heavy Bout Seattle U.R) Don Cock- ell, British Empire heavyweight champion, and Harry (Kid) Matthews knocked off training chores today to await the bell which will bring them together tomorrow night in a 10-round heavyweight bout at Sick's sta dium. Both fighters have been hard on sparring partners all week with Cockell particularly dam aging. Cockell has punished both Eric Hutchinson and Dave Col lins on several occasions. Broadhead Shoot Slated Sunday By Archery Club A broadhead shoot has been scheduled for Sunday, August 9, at 10 a.m. by the Rogue Archers, it was announced today. The shoot will be held at the club s. range on the Joe Williamson ranch on the Old Stage road, about five miles from Central Point. All archers are invited. On August 22 a group of arch ers from the local club and other clubs in the state are going to the Hart Mountain game refuge to assist the Oregon State Game commission to set up facilities for the special archery deer sea son tentatively set for Septem ber 12. Local archers who plan to hunt there and who want ad ditional information from any club officer. Joe McDuffy, recently crown ed Oregon State Broadhead champion, has been elected pres ident of the Rogue Archers. Prizefighter Held in Jail Chicago U.R) Heavyweight prize fiehter Bob Satterfield was Jailed today by vice detec tives ana neia on an open charge. The Negro boxer was not booked, pending further investi gation. The arrest was made at an apartment by detectives Robert nurion ana Harry iwicki. Two Negro women, Jean Thompson, 24, and Effie May Cooper, were .arrested with Satterfield. The detectives accused the women of accepting $75 in marked money from them. Satterfield was arrested in an other room of the apartment, po lice said. Satterfield's attornev. EurlM Taylor, said "he denies" any wrong doing and Indicated the two women were merely guests in the boxer's anartment. Taylor said that Satterfield Deiievea nis troubles seem to "stem from an Irate neighbor" with whom Satterfield has had previous trouble. Vancouver Capilanos Sign Kewpie Barrett Vancouver, B. C. U.R) Dewey Soriano, general manag er of the Vancouver Capilanos of the Western International league, today announced the signing of Dick (Kewpie) Bar rett as combination pitching coach and third-base coach. Barrett, long-time Seattle pitcher, was expected to be added to the active status of the club for the last 20 days of the season. Casey Stengel in a peevish mood today. Mantle may be the new golden glamour boy of the Yankees with his long distance swinging ef forts, but he never will be an all-around star with his boss until he quits trying "to kill the baU." Stengel was a little unhappy even though the Yankees had. pounded out 10 hits in 5-4 vic tory over Detroit because they wound up leaving 10 men on base. Mad at Mantle "Sure we're hitting again, but we're hanging up too many run ners, he said. "And that boy (Mantle) is leaving a lot of them on because he won't hit to the opposite field. He thinks he's got to go for the big blast all the time. Well, in this game he left two on In one inning and then he strikes out with the bases full another time." In the National league the Braves cut Brooklyn's lead to 7Vi games again with a 5-3 tri umph when pinch-hitter Walker Cooper drove in the winning run in the eighth with a single. Carl Furillo earlier hit a Dodger hom er as Brooklyn blew a 3-4 lead when Milwaukee scored two in the seventh then clinched it in the eighth. Pittsburgh also came from be hind again to defeat Cincinnati, 6-4, as Hal Rice hit a two-run homer in the fifth inning. Other Games The Cubs beat the Giants twice, 9-6 and 7-6, the second in 10 innings. In a night game, the Phillies downed the Cardinals, 7-3. The Giants' double loss ran their losing streak to six games. Johnny Klippstein gained his sixth victory for the Cubs in the opener, with late-inning help from Dutch Leonard. For the Phillies, Bob Miller scattered seven hits, including Stan Musial's 14th homer, to get bis fourth win. The White Sox remained five games behind the Yankees by beating the Athletics, 9-7. in 14 innings when Sam Mele broke up the game with a two-run homer. In other American league games, Bob Porterfield of the Senators allowed only six hits as he whipped Cleveland 11-0, for his second shutout among 13 wins; and the Red Sox blanked the Browns, 5-0.
