Drain 17 5 Medford 15 7 Coos Bay 14 8 Eandon 14 10 Roseburg , ,, , 10 13 Coquille 7 15 Brookings 1 21 Medford's Cheney Studs gain ed lone grasp on second spot in the Southwestern Oregon Base ball loop and assured themselves of a post season play-off berth by licking the Bandon Millers in both tilts of their two-game week-end series at the fair grounds ball park here. The Studs nudged the Millers 3 to 4 Sunday after winning 6 to 4 Saturday. Coos Bay-North Bend, previ ously knotted with Medford in second position, split with Rose burg to slip into third place. The Lumberjacks won 6 to 3 Satur day and lost 5 to 1 Sunday. Rose burgh was eliminated in the battle for a play-off berth. Drain Wins Drain maintained its loop lead by tripping Brookings 7 to 0 and 8 to 2 on Sunday. In the Sunday hassle, in which Terry Maddox chucked eight-hit ball and got three hits in three times up, Medford hopped ahead 1 to 0 in the first inning when Moose Blevins hit, went to sec ond on Centerfielder Chuck De Autremont's error and tallied on Frank Roelandt's single.. Bandon tied up the game in the second canto on a double by Al Brown and a smash by Bob Signor. Studs Score Twice Medford pushed in front with two markers in its second bat ting turn. George Sanders and Maddox walked, Blevins sacri ficed and Alex McDonald sin gled. The Studs added another score in the third. Smith tripled, Clarence Mellbye walked and Smith scored on a fielder's op tion on a grounder by Don Faw cett. Bandon narrowed the gap to 4 to 2 in the fourth inning on sin gles by Al Brown and Lamascus, an error and a passed ball. The Millers sliced the deficit to 4 to 3 in the fifth with a walk, stolen base and error. In their part of the .fifth the Studs pushed over what was to be the victory margin run on a triple by Pete Bianchi and sin gle by Fawcett. Millers Threaten The Millers tallied again in the ninth. Jim Sinovic started the chukker by fouling out but DeAutremont and Rsy. Stratton singled. Bill Burgher skied out to shortstop. Lee Sninn popped an infield fly which Second Baseman Sanders failed to snag nnH TJpAutremont . scored. Al Brown flied out to First Base man Mellbye to end the ruckus. Medford came up with a dou ble play in the seventh when Burgher's line fly hung preca riously then settled in Right- fielder Blevm's glove, -levins threw to first base to toss out runner Stratton, who thinking the wallop a sure hit, had taken off from first and rounded second. Ghrmana Wallops Pitcher Paul Gehrman won his own ball game with a double on Saturday night. Medford went into the seventh frame trailing 3 to 4. Snuffy Smith got nn base on an error ana tsiancni singled. Maddox walked and Smith scored on Mellbye's fly- out. Gehrman then socked his two-bagger to send home two runners. DeAutremont and Stratton each tripled in the Saturday encounter. SUNDAY BOX SCORE: Bandon AB MedfordTribuni Will City Defeats Central Point 1-0 In Softball Hassle Mill City nicked Central Point 1 to 0 Sunday in the second round of the double elimination tournament at Mill City, for the Oregon Softball championship. Bob Carey pitched no-hit, no run ball for the victors. Mill City's run was not earned. It came on an error. The winners got six hits off CP Pitcher Bob Smith. First Less It was the first tourney loss for Central Point. (U.R) Jack Burke Jr. hoped no dogs would come near Milburn Coun try club during his 18-hole play off with Cary Middlecoff Mon day. Burke, Houston, Tex., and Middlecoff, Memphis, Tenn., were all even with 276's at the end of 72 holes- Sunday in the $15,000 Kansas City Open Golf tournament. The gallery of 8,000 which saw the finish was hushed at the final green as Burke, was stroking a 30-inch putt which would give him the title. Just then a black and white pointer yelped. Bogey Five Burke missed the putt, took a bogey five, and Middlecoff, fin ishing his round just a few min utes later, carded a closing par four that permitted him to match Burke's 72-hole total of 278, al ready , on the boards. Finisrtftg one stroke back of the two leaders at 277, each win ning $1,200, were Ed Porky Ol iver, Lemont, 111., who shot a final 73, Dave Douglas, Newark, Del., with a 72, Jerry Barber, Pasadena, Calif., who finished gamely with a 68. Sports Pay At Oregon Eugene (U.R) The University of Oregon athletic department has announced that it is operat ing well withm the bookkeeping black this year. In its financial statement pub lished in the summer issue of Old Oregon, the Webfoot alumni magazine, the department indi cated its athletic activities for the 1951-1952, fiscal year result ed in a cross operatine rjrofit of $42,114.80 and a net profit ; of $23,146.80. FLORISTS WIN Portland (U.R) Erv Lind's Florists scored twice in the sec ond inning to shut out the Phoe nix Queens 2-0 here Sunday night in the eighth game of the current women's softball series between the two teams. Mill City (U.R) Corvallis, Tillamook and Eugene won their games here Sunday and advanc ed another round in the Oregon state softball tournament. Corvallis shut out Oswego, 3 0; Tillamook blanked Nyssa, 6 0; and Eugene downed Salem, 10-6. Corvallis touched Oswego pit cher Johnny Pierson for only three hits but took advantage of three Oswego errors and Pier son's wildness to score once in the second inning and twice in the seventh. Three-Run Homer Bob Berkey sparked Tilla mook with a three-run homer in the fifth; He got three hits and batted in four runs for the day. The loss dropped Nyssa from the tournament. Bill Hutchinson and Cece Berg each hit home runs to pace the Eugene victory. Cheney Buys Tacoma Park Ben Cheney of the Cheney Lumber company at Central Point has purchased the base ball park at Tocoma, Wash., and his semi-pro baseball nine, the Medford Cheney Studs will participate in the dedication. Cheney bought the perk from the San Diego Padres of the Coast league. It will be used for city semi-pro and pee wee baseball and other Ta coma sports programs. The city of Tacoma will buy the park from Cheney under a long term arrangement DEDICATION AUGUST 28 It is understood that a pro fessional baseball nine, if it desires, will have the oppor tunity to lease the field. Ta coma previously had a club in th e Western International lague ' but dropped out this year. San Diego held the Ta coma franchise. ' The park will be dedicated as Cheney field on Tuesday, August 26, and the Studs will play the city league champs or a city all-star team. Grants Pass First in RVL Grants Pass wound ud in reg ular season first place in the Rogue Valley Baseball league Sunday by defeating Butte Falls 11 to 7 and Ashland took third spot by nipping Glendale 7 to 6. In the first round next Sunday of the season - end . play-off Grants Pass will entertain Ash land and .- second-place Cave Junction will mix with fourth place Glendale at Central Point. Oakland and Hollywood, with only a half-a-game separating them seemed ready to stage a stretch fight for the pennant. Several teams, of course, yet hold a chance to win. But tab bing even San Diego, in third place and the closest of the pur suers, is a long-shot bet. Oaks Nab Two Oakland climaxed a success ful 6-1 series against Los Ange les Sunday, winning two games, 8-4 and 10-1, to stay half-a-game in front of Hollywood. The Stars copped five of seven from San Francisco, taking two Sunday, 15-5 and 7-6. Hollywood once led by four runs in the sec ond game but had to score twice in the last frame to get the de cision. San Diego, which lost a 4-3 series to Sacramento, got some Babes Out Of Tourney Portland U.R) Oregon City blanked the Chiefs of. Portland, 3-0, and Molalla defeated Heales' Babes of Portland, 5-1, Sunday, in the state American Baseball Congress baseball tournament at Westmoreland park. Dr. Frank Dierickx struck out 13 Chief batters and allowed only three scattered hits in lead ing Oregon City to its shutout victory.
