Ladder Fall Thomas Juth zeit, general delivery, Medford, was resting in Sacred Heart hos pital Saturday following a fall from a ladder at the Medford Frink orchard, according to hos pital attendants. Trash Fire Medf ord's fire de partment extinguished a trash fire at the home of W. H. Hart man, 11 South Peach street, Sat urday afternoon. The fire was burning after the noon-time lim it and no permit had been ob tained, firemen reported. Pre-School Roundup The Lone Pine Parent-Teacher association will sponsor a pre-school round up at the school from 1:30 to 3 p.m. August 26. Dr. A. Erin Merkel will be in charge. Car Damaged A car driven by Elsie Gabel Turner, route 2, box 246, Medford, was consider ably damaged Friday morning in a collision at Fifth street and Riverside avenue, according to a city police report. The other vehicle involved, a pick-up truck driven by Rudy E. Conner, Tal ent, received minor damage, it was said. Promoted To Corporal James A. Davis, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ellis E. Davis, route 3, Medford, was recently promoted to cor poral while serving with the 40th infantry division on the active central front in Korea. Corporal Davis arrived in Korea last Feb ruary and entered the Army in November, 195ft. He was former ly employed by the Pinnacle Packing company here. - Health Clinic A health clinic for all beginning pupils of the Ruch and Applegate schools will be held at the Ruch school Thurs day, August 21, from 1 to 3 p.m. Dr. A. E. Merkel, county health physician, will conduct the clin ic, assisted by a county nurse. Also assisting will be Mrs. Ray Offenbacher and Mrs. L. Snople, P.T.A. summer round-up chair men. Parents of all first grade pupils are requested to have their children, present for the medical check-up. From Texas Paula Jeanne Scott, daughter of Mr. and Mrs William E. Scott, 715 Clark street, returned to Medford Wednesday from Ft, Worth, Texas. She spent two months there visiting her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. E. T. Tilley. ' Plan Picnic Royal Neighbors of America will hold a picnic and swimming party for the ju venile group beginning at 4 p.m. Thursday, August 21 at Haw thorne park. Families attending are to take a box lunch, and ice cream and cake will be fur nished. Those not wishing to swim may come at 6:30 p.m., when the picnic will begin. Airman Promoted Raymond V. Swinney, son of Mr. and Mrs. George W. Swinney,' 1013 West Ninth street, was recently pro moted from staff sergeant to technical sergeant in the U. S. Air Force. Swinney is station ed at Amarillo Air Force base, Texas, and has been in the serv ice six years. He attended Med ford high school. On Board Ship William C. Ruffin, torpedoman's mate sec ond class, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. R. H. Ruffin, Camp White, is on board the destroyer USS Henderson, which is returning to the United States, according to a navy release. The Henderson has been on bombardment and screening duty in the Korean area. On Navy Cruize Midshipman Robert V. Walker, USNR, son of Verl G. Walker, 2642 Merriman road, is on a seven-week cruise to northern Europe and Cuba on the destroyer USS Robert H. Mc Card. He sailed recently from the naval base at Norfolk, Va., with 1,500 midshipmen from 24 colleges and universities. The cruise is to stress naval indoctri nation and acclimate them to shipboard Jife. Visitors Here Mr. and Mrs. E. D. Tompkins, route 1, box 433A, Medford, have as visitors at their home their son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer E. Tompkins, Amarillo, Tex. He is an airman, second class, and is an instructor in the engine branch at the air base there. The visitors Mil leave next Thursday. The E. D. Tomp kins also entertained Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Burkhead and grand son, Van Nuys, Calif., last week. Mrs. Burkhead is a sister of Mrs. Tompkins. ASCENDS THRONE The Par liament of Jordan has proclaimed 17-year-old Crown Prince Hussein II (above) as King of Lebanon after ousting the youth's ailing father, King Talal. Child in Hospital After Drinking Cleaning Fluid Two-year-old Coral Hale was reported in "good condition" Saturday afternoon after she drank some cleaning fluid, ac cording to Sacred Heart hospital attendants. The child is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Richard Hale, route 2, box 220, Medford. She re mained in the hospital over night for observation. Conger Morris ambulance took her to the hospital where she was . giv en emergencey treatment. To Write Article Mrs. E. E. Siegley, Portland, a free lance writer, visited the Jacksonville museum last week. She is plan ning on writing a piece on the museum for Sunset magazine. The schedule of events in cludes musical numbers, dances, swimming and diving and sev eral variety numbers. Between 3,000 and 4,000 per sons saw the first annual pag eant, held last year, and- plans are being completed to have fa cilities for larger crowds this year. Bleachers are being erect ed around the pool in addition to 100 permanent balcony seats. Tickets for the performances can be obtained at the swim ming apool office. There will be a charge for balcony seats and bleacher seats will be given with out charge. The pool will close Wednesday at 5 p.m. to allow time for final preparations for the pageant. It will remain closed all day on Thursday and Friday and will open at the regular hour on Sat urday. Obituary IVAN OWINGS Services for Ivan Spencer Owings, 26, who died Tuesday, will be. held at 2:30 Monday at Conger-Morris chapel, with the Reverend Wolford A. Dawes of ficiating. Committal will be in Siskiyou Memorial Park. Mr. Owings was born in Med ford on June 14, 1926. He served in World War II from Oct. 20, 1944 to Nov. 28, 1946. On May 9, 1947 he married Betty Jean Johnston. At the time of his death he was working as a loader in a lumber mill in Ban don, Oregon. He is survived by his wife, his mother, Mrs. Betty Alice Owings; two brothers, Cecil, who is serving in the Army in Korea, and Andrew, Jacksonville; and one sister, Mrs. Mary Belcher, Bandon. WILLIS IRELAND Services for Willis Wilbur Ire land, 60, who died Friday, will be held Monday at 10 a.m. in Conger-Morris chapel with the Rev. Hardwick W. Harshman of ficiating. Committal will be in lOOF cemetery. Mr. Ireland was born Aug. 27, 1891 in Brock, Nebr. He had made his home here since 1922. On April 12, 1942 he was mar ried to Ida Morgan Cole, who survives. At the time of his death he was working as a timber cruiser for a local lumber com pany. Besides his wife, he is sur vived by three brothers: Charles J. Winters and Lester Winters, Medford; Harry Winters, Rogue River; and one sister: Mrs. Ray Olson, Heppner. ROBERT OWEN Robert Clayton Owen died at a local hospital Saturday morn- i ing. Arthur Sueltz, interim student ! pastor of the First Presbyterian 1 church officiating. Local ar- rangements are in charge of Chapel Mortuary. Mr. Mall was born on May 14, 1890, at Jeffersonvjlle, N. Y. He became an electrical engineer and in 1917 was married to Clara Hildebrandt, who survives. He was a veteran of World War I, and moved to Riverside, Calif., in 1935, where he operated a ranch. He was a member of the Methodist church and the Ma sonic lodge. Besides his wife, he is sur vived by one daughter, Mrs. Har old G. Baughman, 922 Park street, Medford; three brothers, Walter, of Jeffersonville, N. Y.; John, of West Norwood, N. J.: and Harry, of Los Angeles; one sister, Mrs. H. Bush, Flushing, Long Island, N. Y.; and three grandchildren, Joan, Jean, and George Baugnman, in meuxuiu. To Diamond Lake Mr. and Mrs. Phil Brainerd and son left Saturday afternoon for tneir cottage at Diamond lake where they planned to spend the weekend. Medford Navy Pilot Awarded Air Medal ' Ens. Russell M. Killingsworth, USN, son of Mr. and Mrs. Russell K. Killingsworth, Route 1, Med ford, has been awarded the air medal for meritorious achieve ment in flights during operations from August 8 to October 17, 1950 in Korea, a navy release re ported Saturday. Ensign Killingsworth ' was re leased from active duty in Octo ber, 1951. A pilot of a fighter plane in a squadron attached to the air craft carrier USS Philippine Sea, Ensign Killingsworth carried out 10 attacks against enemy power plants, airfield installations, lines of communication, trans port facilities, vehicles and ship ping, the release states. Returns to Korea Cpl. Gar land D. Winkle, Eagle Point, has returned to the 25th division in Korea after a rest and recuper ation leave in Japan, according to an armed forces release. Cor poral Winkle is an assistant squad leader in the 27th in fantry regiment. HUNGER PREVAILS Davenport, la.
