In and Around Table Rock First Train Uses Reheated Tracks Portland (U.R) The first train to use the relocated South ern Pacific railroad tracks at Lookout Point dam on the mid dle Ifork of the Willamette river passed over the new section Fri- The 90-car freight and the pri vate car of S. P. Superintendent L. B. Hopkins passed south bound over the new stretch "of tracks, which are on the left or east bank of the river and overlook the dam and reservoir. The old tracks were on the op posite side of the river and did not command a view of the dam. The Corps of Engineers said trains would use the new tracks for a 10-day testing period be fore the section is turned over to Southern Pacific Aug. 25. Table Rock H. , D. . Reed of the Meadows district was a busi ness visitor here one day last week. He informed us that he has traded his farm for land in the Rogue River section. Local orchardists are having pear trees where branches are heavily laden with fruit; support ed with props as the. pears grow larger. A good crop seems in prospect and picking of Bartletts will commence Monday at the Hull orchard where already ex tra cabins are filled and some half dozen trailer houses are on hand with prospective pickers. A statement of bonded indebt edness of county school districts from County Treasurer Ralph Sweeney shows Central Point, which we are now a part of, with $669,136.44, second highest in the county and only exceeded by Medford. Nearly all oi this money was levied for building purposes. In contrast we find that in 1892 the Table Rock dis trict voted a levy of 10 mills which raised $313.41 which was used to build a new school house, the contractor doing-the job for an even $300. During logging operations last week in the Lost Creek section, "Red" Wilson reports that a rat tle snake was killed that meas ured exactly six feet long after the rattles were taken off. An other large rattle snake lying under a log was caught in the loop when the choker setter put the line under and . was parted in the middle when . the pull come on the cable. ' Mr. and Mrs. Rodney Olson of Hood River, former residents of this community, visited with friends here and in the valley the first of the week. They said the pear crop at Hood River was severely damaged by frost. In a roundup with Goodlin's bees one day last week Elgin Robinson, who was mowing hay on the J. S. Richardson farm, jumped from the tractor seat and dived into a canal with three feet of water, then crawled through a large tube throwing the bees off .his trail momentar ily while . he,- ran for a safer place.-According to Goodlin he had been using a brand of hair oil which attracted the bes. The Edgar Pleasant family who resided-for" some time at the Modoc orchard are now liv ing on their farm in the Beagle district and enjoying the con veniences of electricity recently put in by- the California Oregon Power company,' which is now starting work on a line from this district to Sams Valley to in crease voltage there. Sunday. August 17.' 1952 MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE SEVES The Robert Sage family re turned Friday from Eugene where Sage attended a session of summer school at University of Oregon. The Ray Doran family spent last Sunday boat riding and swimming at Diamond lake. Pear picking will commence August 18 at the Modoc orchard where an average or better crop of good quality fruit is to be harvested. Porcupines are more numer ous in these parts than usual this year. One getting in the way of a car on the road a few nights ago was run over causing a punctured tire. Miss Frankie Adams, former ly of Table Rock, accompanied by her two cousins from Penn sylvania, stopped on a brief vis it at the J. S. Richardson home Friday. Miss Adams, who at tended the Table Rock school as a child, is now a teacher in the California schools. Virgin olive oil is the oil that comes from, the first pressing of olives. Refined olive oil is pro duced from the second, third and fourth pressings which are subjected to chemical treatment to improve color, flavor and aroma. American rice farmers grow rice with the expenditure of about two man-days of labor per acre yearly, as compared with 300 to 400 man-days of labor per acre in the rest of the world. Children in school in South China pay their tuition in rice. The tuition ranges from 5 pounds of rice a semester for the first graders to 12 pounds for the 6th graders.
