Average for rest of the country is 87 per cent. A recent check-up on the facilities of New York, City hospitals for blessed events revealed that in the great majority of institutions they are far from what they should be. Incidentally, the country's best hospital for a birth, from, the standpoint of both mother 'and child, is said to be in Jersey City, N.J. Briefly How right George Moore was when he observed: "The sever est moralists are those who have never known the pain of tempta tion." . . . Only a woman of the world who is at least thirty qualifies for that. Besides to know love, to under stand it, a woman must lose thought of herself ahd concen trate on the one beloved. That to the average model is impossible. The nature of her activity in spires her to think chiefly of herself. Models are the most self-centered of all women. Optical Illusion . That a curved baseball is not an optical illusion was proven 82 years ago. The first man to toss a curved baseball was Wil liam "Candy" Cummings of the Brooklyn Stars. That was in 1864. Scientists immediately de clared it was impossible to curve a baseball, that it was an "opti cal illusion." That it was "against all rules of physics. ' The point was argued for six years. Then Fred Goldsmith of New Haven, Conn., gave an ex hibition of curve ball pitching in which he curved baseballs around poles: That was on August 17, 1870. Please Note A musical version of G. B. Robinson is suing his former wife for $1,000 damages for stealing the kitchen sink. Robinson sa'id in his suit that when his former wife moved out of his house, she left everything but the kitchen sink. And when she took that, he said, she dam aged the wall and two doors get ting it out and ruined his lawn driving a truck up to get it. ers. Get It Right "Brooklyn has been sending film stars to Hollywood since Clara Bow." So I note it said. What does the man mean "since Clara Bow?" Fabulous Fellow "Diamond Jim" Brady was worth around $12 million. In his heyday he earned a million dollars a year. After Brady had known Lillian Russell for thirty years he proposed marriage to her. Offered to give her a mil lion dollars in cash as a wedding present. Lillian turned him down and married Alexander Moore of Pittsburgh. "Diamond Jim" was also fond of a blonde from Brooklyn named Edna Mc Cauley. He is said to have pre sented Edna with over a million dollars worth of jewelry. But she also turned down a proposal of marriage from him.
