(U.R) A re search laboratory has been op ened here to find new industrial uses for vermiculite, a low-cost incombustible mineral. Dr. George Ziegler, director, said his staff of 14 will deter mine further uses for the mica like material now known mainly as a light weight plaster and con' crete aggregate, as home insula tion and as a coil conditioner. Vermiculite does not burn and provides a barrier to the spread of flame. Used in concrete it pro vides 12 to 16 times the insulat ing value of ordinary sand con crete; as a soil conditioner it lightens heavy clay- soil and strengthens sandy ground, Zieg ler said. K. Hanna's circuit court for obtaining money under false pretenses. Hebert was taken to Salem to day by Sheriff Howard Gault. 'Another man charged with writing worthless' checks was arrested yesterday by the city police. Elwyn Sherwood Will son, 35, 520 South Fir street, was arrested and charged with passing fictitious checks at two Medford markets. Police charged that Willson passed a $20 check at the Cen tral market, 437 South Central avenue, and a S15 check at the King Street market, 932 King, street Both checks were found to be worthless. Footlighters Elect New Vice-President . Norris K. Porter was elected vice-president of the Medford Footlighters at the first meeting of the new board of directors held this week. Porter, long ac tive in the civic theater group formerly served as president and as business manager.
