Range Reseeding Tour Slated for . August 25 fo27 A ranee tour of several rfr seeding areas in Jackson county has been scheduled August 25, 26 and 27, according to W. B. Tucker, county extension agent. The tour will begin at 8:30 p.m. Monday," August 25, at the courthouse. Medford Kiwanis club will sponsor the observance here for the third year. National sponsors are the National Kids Day foun dation and Kiwanis 'Internation' al. FIREMEN STAND BY The Medford fire department stood by at the municipal air port at about 2:30 p.m. yester dav while an FM-2 plane, pilot ed by Eugene Kooser, landed safely, firemen reported today. Candidates Invited - In a stormy session Wednes day the council voted to invite Democratic candidate Gov. Ad lai E. Stevenson and the Repub lican nominee, Dwight D. Eis enhower, to address the AFL National convention next month. After hearing the candidate's speeches, the powerful 15-man executive council was expected to recommend that the National convention take a definite stand for either Stevenson or Eisen hower. To Make Recommendation "In all probability, after hear ing the speeches of the candi dates, we will recommend that the National Convention endorse a presidential candidate," one council member said. Members of the Political Ed ucation group had . stated pre- viously that, the labor organiza tion was overwhelmingly behind Stevenson. The AFL has endorsed only one presidential candidate in its history. He was Robert La Follette, pro-labor Progressive party nominee, who lost to Cal vin Coolidge in 1924. ' ' Noted Newspaper Columnist Succumbs West Chester, Pa.. U.PJ Mark Sullivan, newspaperman, columnist and historian, died Wednesday night in the same town where he began his news paper career more than 60 years ago. A nationally-syndicated col umnist for the New York Herald-Tribune, Sullivan would have been 79 years old next month. He suffered a heart at tack on his farm in nearby Avondale, Pa., Wednesday after noon and was rushed , to the Chester County Hospital here in an ambulance. One of the most' respected writers on international and na tional affairs, Sullivan was au thor of the six-volume book "Our Times." Nixon Thanks Local Man for Telegram Tony Manno, Medford hard ware man, received a letter re cently from Richard Nixon, Re publican vice-presidential can didate in answer to .a telegram of congratulations which Manno sent the Californian after the latter V nomination. Nixon wrote: . "This is just a note to tell you how much I appreciated your congratulations on my nomina tion for the Vice-Presidency." "We have a real fight in front on us from now until Novemb er, and, as you can imagine, I will be going through some pret ty hectic days. It will certainly be good to know that my friends and supporters will be with me all the' way. "With all good wishes, sincere ly, Richard Nixon." Manno met Nixon when he was a member of the internation al board of trustees of the 20-30 club from 1938-42 and Nixon was president of the Whittier, Calif., club. Later the two be came better acquainted at the 20-30 national conventions held in San Francisco and San Diego. Ashland Man Charged With Theft of Aufo Chester Henry McCoy, 36, of Ashland, was in the county jail today charged with stealing a car which once belonged to him, the city police report. McCoy is charged with the larceny of a car from Medford Motors, Jackson street and Riverside avenue. The car was reported miss ing yesterday from the used car lot. Police said the car was tak en from McCoy several days ago because of his failure to meet the payments. McCoy had an other set of keys so he took the car back, police said, after mail ing the company the money he owed. McCoy's check for the back payment was received to day, according to a representa tive from Medford Motors.. Bite Taken From Cheese Traps Burglary Suspect Omaha (U.R) The police didn't bait this trap but they snared a suspect on. a burglary charge just the same. Officers found a piece of cheese with a bite taken out of it while investigating the rob bery of a chain store. The cheese was sent, along with dental im pressions of six suspects, to the FBI in Washington. Back came word that the im pressions on the cheese matched those of George Bartlett, 24, an ex-convict. . York U.R) At 25-year-old woman gave birth unattend ed to a girl Thursday in the rest room of a Pan-American airliner flying from San Juan, P. R., to New York. Mrs. Lidia Serpa,. New York, and her new daughter were re ported doing fine at a hospital where they were taken after the plane landed at Idlewild Air port. ' Passengers and crew members were not aware of the child's birth until they heard the'eries of the newborn baby coming from the lavatory on the four engined plane. Barbara Giron, stewardess on the flight, said Mrs. Serpa told her at midnight that she was hav ing pains. But the pregnant wom an, whose husband was sched uled to meet her at the -airport in New York, said she wasn't worried because the baby was not due for two more months. The Portland General Electric Co. said Thurs day it would ask that the recent order by the Oregon State Hydro electric commission denying it the right to build the controver sial Pelton dam on the Deschutes river be set aside. A company official said the firm would file with the commis sion an application for a public hearing on the company's appli cation for the permit. The com pany claimed the commission should have conducted a public hearing before turning down the original application. The Pelton dam is opposed by commercial and sport fishermen, who cjaim it would destroy fish life on the Deschutes.
