(U.R) Mayor Arthur Sulzmann is one public official who means it when he talks abou': budget cutting. Mayor Sulzmann last winter told taxpayers either to raise their ante or force curtailment of community services. They chose the latter. That saving in the budget meant someone had to cut the grass in front of the city hall, so Sulzmann, a man of his word, now takes mower in hand to save his constituents money. Gov. Dogulas McKay said the situation was "getting out of hand" and should be made a special order of business be tween the board and prison of ficials. The - state of prison finances came to light at a meeting of the board when it considered a routine request from Warden Virgil O'Malley for permission Oak Grove Sets Registration Dale All elementary school stu dents of Oak Grove School Dis trict 69 will register for school on Tuesday, September 2. Stu dents will register at the office' of the principal from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Be ginning students should bring birth certificates with them at the time of registration. Regular class sessions will commence on . Thursday, Sep tember 4. The "school cafeteria will open on that day, also. Hood River (U.R) Seventy five witnesses have testified this week in a hearing conducted here by the Department of Agri culture to determine the advisa bility of forming a sustained yield timber unit for Hood Riv er county. to attend the 82nd annual Con gress of Corrections at Atlantic City in October. Payment of travel expenses was to be -mafle from institution funds. , Funds Hard Pressed But William Ryan, suervisor of institutions for the board, said he felt obliged to point out that the prison's funds would be hard pressed to provide money for O'Malley's travel ex penses to the convention. The prison has already called on $150,000 from the State Emer gency Board, Ryan said. Secretary of ' State Earl T. Newbry said the difficulty at the penitentiary stemmed mainly from the higher costs of feeding the convicts and the problem of food management. Food Manager Sought The state is now attempting to find a qualified food manager who could bring more efficient administration to the prison's food department. Ryan said most of the other state institutions were able to keep within their budgets. Warden O'Malley's re quest was temporarily passed over by the board pending fur ther study of prison finances. Sow Can't Identify Pigs Sprayed With Kerosene Windsor, N. C. (U.R) When one of Henry Cooke's sows far rowed 14 pigs and another had six, he figured out a way to even up the litters without making either mother mad. Cooke spray ed all the pigs with kerosene so neither sow could tell its own by smell. Then he j?laoed 10 pigs with each sow.
