Smith Sparks Oregon Team in Jaycee Meet Eugene U.PJ Tommy Ja cobs, Montebello, Calif., and Don Bisplinghoff, Orlando, Fla., led the field of 100 young golfers into the opening 18 holes of 72 hole medal play Wednesday for the National Junior Chamber of Commerce golf title. Jacobs, who had a 68 Monday, slipped to a 74 Tuesday but his 142 was good enough to edge Bisplinghoff for medalist honors by one stroke. They were the only two players under par in the 36-hole qualifying rounds. Three players were tied at 149 for third place. They were James Raines of Augusta, Ga., whose 70 was the best card yesterday; Scotty Fraser, Panama City, Fla., and Buddy Manderson, Tus caloosa, Ala. i Teams Tied California and Florida tied at 610 for four-man team honors. Wednesday's scores by their re spectives entries will determine the team title: Georgia was third with 619, Minnesota fourth with 624 and Alabama fifth with 630. A score of 167 or better was good enough to qualify for the 72-hole tournament. Thirty-nine golfers fell by the wayside. Knotted in fourth place at 150 were Ed Brantley, Chattanooga, ' ,.fltoitofg,f. COACH MOVES New York (U.R) The future of big time college basketball in New York was left up in the air Wednesday by the sudden resig nation of Frank McGuire as coach of traditionally powerful St. John's. McGuire, one of the game's top coaches, gave up a contract that still had three years to run at St. John's to ac cept a similar position at the University of North Carolina. Their behavior toward the short-statured southpaw is in corrigible and . . . well, just in downright poor taste. Partly to Blam However, the unlucky left hander had himself partly to blame for the loss. He had a 1-0 lead until the sixth, when he walked Mike McCormick. Short stop Artie Wilson then commit ted his first of two- bobbles on Joe Brovia's grounder. Don Eggert dropped a bunt and' Nagy, with a good shot to force McCormick at third, threw the ball away. One run was in. Brovia scored on Herm Reich's fly ball. And Eggert came home on Ed Basinskl s single the only hit of the inning. Vic David VFW High Rifleman Vic David took high over all honors Sunday in the big bore rifle shoot of the VFW Rifle and Pistol club at the Camp White range. He fired a 162 score to quali fy for sharpshooter. His 116 was high for rapid fire. Jim Scalberg and Jack Beale tied for first in slow fire with 47s. Beale, Scalberg ,and M. Childers qualified. as marksmen with scores better than 130. The club will have its regular meeting at the VFW hall at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, August 13. ' Fingerling Trout Placed by Plane In Cascade Lakes Portland The game com mission's Cascade mountain aer ial fish planting mission is near- ing its goal of 400 remote Cas cade lakes stocked this summer with 3,180,000 rainbow and brook trout. Stocking of Mt. Hood national forest lakes from Hood river and Deschutes and Willamette na tional forest lakes from Fall River trout hatchery flight strip has been completed and fish plants are now being made in Umpqua and Rogue river nation al forest lakes from the Fort Klamath air strip. Aerial pho tos are used to locate many of the lakes for planting. Special Equipment Tiny fingerling trout are flown to the high lakes, most of them accessible only by trail, in a Piper super cub fitted with special belly tanks and an aer ation system. Sam Whitney of Newberg has piloted the fish run for the past four years, with fishery agents Reino Koski and John Dimick handling transport of fish from hatchery to air strip and over-all planting,. Heaviest aerial plant was an allocation of 00 ,000 rainbow and 300,000 eastern brook trout ,to Waldo lake, a 5500 acre body of wilderness surrounded water on the crest of the Cascade range. A two-man game commission survey crew outfitted with pack animals is checking on fish pop ulations in many of the remote Cascade lakes to determine trout survival, fish growth rates and numbers, and fishing success re sulting from the aerial stocking program. Rocky Marciano Starts Training Grossinger, N. Y. (U.R) Chal lenger Rocky Marciano started training here Wednesday to meet Jersey Joe Walcott in their heavyweight title fight, reliably reported to be set for Philadel phia's Municipal Stadium Sep tember 23, As the unbeaten "blockbuster" from Brockton, Mass., began con ditioning at this swanky resort in the Catskills, everyone offic ially connected with the bout still insisted that the match was not made and that no city had been selected for the "millyun dollar" brawl. Marciano was an early 2 to 1 favorite.' It was "even money" Walcott would not last the sched uled 15 rounds. KID SOON READY Portland (U.R) Jack Hurley, manager of Harry Kid Matthews, said Wednesday that his fighter would soon be ready to go into action. Matthews was knocked out in the second round last month by Rocky Marciano in New York. Hurley would not say where Matthews' "come back" would begin, but said a number of cities had made of fers. These include, he said, Pittsburgh, Cincinnati, Cleve land, Seattle and Boise. MOVING? Save by Renting a -BEE HIVE U -DRIVE Vans Stakes and Pickup Trucks JEM'S TEXACO STATION Wasp and HobsoiT Collision Blamed On Young Skipper Washington (U.R) The Navy Wednesday closed its books on the disastrous collision of the destroyer minesweeper Hob sort and the aircraft .carrier Wasp after . placing the blame on a youthful skipper who went down with , his ship. A Navy Court of Inquiry found that Lt. Cmdr. William J. Tierney,- commanding officer of the, Hobson, was solely re sponsible, for his ship being ramrred .by the Wasp during maneuvers in mid-Atlantic last April 26. The Hobson sank almost im mediately after colliding with the Wasp. The accident, in which 176 crew members of the Hobson were lost, ranks as the Navy's worst modern peacetime sea dis aster. The court said Tierney, a 32-year-old former reserve officer, "committed a grave error in judgment'' in making the fatal turn which brought his ship di rectly into the path of the Wasp. The court, which functions much as a civilian grand jury, was set up to determine the cause for the disaster as a pre liminary to disciplinary action. Since it pinned the blame soley on Tierney, a Navy spokesman said, there would be no further Naval action in the case. Oregon Man Safe After Plane Mishap Walla Walla, Wash. . (U.R) Two Walla Walla men who spent a night in Oregon's Blue Moun tains after their light plane was forced down by mechanical trouble, walked out to safety Tuesday. Gene Wentland and Troy Poole were : reported missing Monday night when they failed to return home on a flight from here to Enterprise, Ore., and re turn. Wentland called his fath er Tuesday and said they walk ed down a stream until they came to the railroad tracks which they followed to Minam, Ore. Neither was injured, Wentland reported. Wentland was pilot and owner. Wholesale Food Costs Reach Highest Level New York (U.R) Whole sale food costs climbed to the highest level of the year this week on the Dun and Bradstreet Index. Price increases in nearly half of the 31 foods used in compil ing the index, boosted the figure for the week ended Aug. 12, to $6.66, a cent above the previous 1952 high of $6.65 set the week before. A year ago the Index was $6.94. Belgium Cuts Length Of Military Service Brussels (U.R) The Belgian government Wednesday cut the military service period for draft ees from 24 to 21 months after nationwide strikes and soldier mutinies against the two-month period. Sue DeVoe Enters Junior Tourney Sue DeVoe, Medford, is enter ed in the United States Golf as sociation junior championship tournament which opens on Aug ust 18 at the Monterey Peninsula Country club, Pebble Beach, Calif. Miss DeVoe, a Portland resi dent until this summer, won the Oregon Golf association junior girl's toga in June. Match play opens on August 19 with finals on August 21. URNESS HURT Norfolk, Va. (U.R) Eddie Urness, bonus pitcher from The Dalles, Ore., suffered a twisted ankle in "the second game of a doubleheader between Roanoke and Norfolk, Tuesday night. Ur ness was taken to a hospital for treatment after he injured his ankle while backing up the plate in the fourth inning following a base hit to right field.
