(U.R) The covered bridge is fast vanishing from the American scene and along with it pleasant memories of the horse and buggy days and some bits of history. One of the most beautiful and best preserved bridges today is the two-lane span crossing the Tygarts River at Philippi. The residents oi the town and Bar bour county are determined that this historic old bridge shall not be allowed to rot away as others have done, or be removed for modern structures. , This well - preserved link to the past stands near the ground where the first land battle of the Civil War was fought and it brings' memories of the tramp, tramp, tramp of marching feet that echoed through the cool green hills of the Tygarts River Valley. The bridge first came into being in 1852 and it has seen a great deal of history in the making. Slave Freed Nearby It was near this bridge that the first slave was freed from prison after the Emancipation Proclamation of Abraham Lin coln. Near here, too, in the early 19000s Mother's Day had its origin. However, the old patriarch nev er looked better than it does to day, for the people of Tygarts Valley are dressing the bridge up, getting ready to celebrate its 100th birthday. The bridge has proven its great strength ov er the 100 years. It forms part of the connecting link between Philippi and the junction of U. S. Routes 119 and 250 north of the town.. Only towering trailer trucks are prohibited from using the bridge because of its limited 11- foot, 10-inch clearance. It was not long after the bridge was completed that it heard the rumble of cannon and reverberated to the marching feet of the armies of both the North -and South in the battle for the preservation of the Urv ion. Military Objective Actually the first land battle, although it had far-reaching ef fects, was pretty much . of a farce. It was signalled, not by a general or military man, but by a frightened woman. Col. George A. Porterfield of the Confederate troops arrived in Philippi late in May, 1861. He was to gather a band of loyal confederates and proceed north to capture the railroad between there and Wheeling. Gen. George B. McClellan heard about the plan and sent his Ohio and Western Virginia forces south to hold the rail road. McClellan decided to attack Philippi and cut off Porterfield's escape route from the town. Part of McClellan's troops were to proceed south, skirting the. .town,, and 'capture trie Philippi cover ed bridge, over which the Rebel forces would cross to retreat southward. Premature Shot Meanwhile, the other North ern troops were to entrench on the hills overlooking the town from the north, ready to launch the attack on June 3. As McClellan's troops passed a farm house that night an old woman was awakened and ran out of her house iiring a pistol at the "Yankees." 'A pistol shot was to be the sig nal of attack, and since it was premature, the escape roifte ov er the bridge remained open, al lowing the Confederate troops to get out of the trap. Steelways, magazine of the American Iron and Steel Insti tute, says that the Curtis-Wright Corp., co-operating steel comp anies and the Air Force combin ed efforts to work out a method for faster propeller production. Extrusion, the production method by which hot steel is made to "flow" through a shap ed die, long has been in use to make simple forms with uniform thickness from soft metal. Steel ways says to make so compli cated a shape as a propeller blade from a nickel-chrome- molybdenum steel, one of in dustry's hardest alloys, is some thing else again. Initially, a 400- pound block of steel is electrically heated in salt solution, then put into a die and smashed at with a bat tering ram called a mandrel ex erting tremendous, pressure to form the propeller shank. The second step requires use of a tapered mandrel to taper the shank. Then the steel is re heated, a longer mandrel is used to batter it, and the steel flows out through the die to form flat, hollow blades. The final step then is simply a matter of flat tening and twisting the blades. , When cigarettes are "lit up," they have no sense of reason and most forest fires are caused by smokers. Tilt.
