The Dizick's have ten children, two being in service and eight at home. Five are of school age, three will attend the local school and two will go to Central Point. O. J. Wilson, on his return from Sams Valley. Monday re ported that some of the alfalfa seed fields there were flattened by the Sunday storm. Table Rock housewives dug out the old tallow candles Sun day when power was off for some four hours during and after the storm. : Subscribers here of the Cen tral Point Mutual Telephone company regret very much hear ing of the resignation of Jack Sharp as manager. During the fifteen years of his management he has been a loyal and faithful employee and in the pinches many times going beyond the line of duty. Personally he was a great help to the writer when during the war he was trying to keep the line intact while the Table Rock people were man ning a 24-hour observation post and construction crews at Camp White were continually putting the line out. Last Friday evening a large number of people turned out to burn dry grass and dispose of the fire hazards around the Sams Valley school buildings and Grange hall. The project was sponsored by members of the Grange. A field of alfalfa being kept for seed on the J. S. Richardson farm has ben abandoned for that purpose and cut for hay owing to a poor set of seed pods thought to be caused by weather conditions. The raccoon tribe which has been making themselves scarce here for some time are begin ning to be a little too numerous again. A m6ther hen and her brood were destroyed recently on the Everett Brown farm and a mother coon and three young ones were seen a few nights ago around the Robert Sage home. John Dodge of Medford was telling us last Tuesday that one of his neighbors reported that hail stones as big as a hen's egg fell at his place killing chickens and doing other damage. HUGH PRUETT Pacific Regional Director, American Meteor Society The annual visit of the August have often heard It said that hailstones as big as hen's eggs fell but have never seen any, and while we hesitate to dispute anyone's word, we have won dered if some folks don't have hens that lay eggs of a smaller caliber than the ones we are used to. W. W. Timm the obliging care taker of the TouVelle park tells us that at the present time the facilities of the park are being used by some 3,400 people a week. The Tunberg boys who are spending their summer vacation here with their grandmother, Mrs. Ray Bosworth each re ceived a bicycle last week from their father in Los Angeles. The machines, made in England, are somewhat different from those made In the U. S. A. Light enough In weight to pick up with one hand, three speeds, one low enough to climb hills, with a high that will go to 30 miles per hour depending on the ri der's leg motions, which is the limiting factor in all gears. A shep shearing crew has completed shearing 1.200 lambs belonging to Mr. Phillips of Roseburg and now on pasture at the TaUle Top ranch. The Donald Richardson fam ily arrived Tuesday from Port land to spend their annual va cation with Donald's parents at the J. S. Richardson home. While here they expect among other things to do a lot of fish ing and attend the Shakespear ean Festival at Ashland. The big machine designed and built by Aubry Taylor for har vesting cucumbers is busy this week on the Ed Taylor Pickle farm picking one of the best crops of cucumbers according to Mr. Taylor that he has ever grown. A letter to Mrs. Fred Smith from her son Sgt. Ernest Smith states that he is now in Japan waiting for a boat to begin his long journey home where he expects to remain for some time. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Myers and grandadughter Carol Myers returned Tuesday from a motor trip up the coast as far as Seattle, Wash. Com monly known as Perseids since they appear to radiate from the star groups Perseus, they fur nish a display of shooting stars which varies little in intensity from year to year. In some coun tries they are called the "Tears of St. Lawrence." They are yel low, often trace long arcs across the sky, and sometimes leave paths which remain visible for several seconds. The Perseids travel in the orbit of the comet of 1862 (Tut tle's) and are thought to be the debris from its disintegration. In August, the earth in its tra vel around the sun, runs into the path of these meteors. As one writer expresses it, "the earth and swarm reach the grade crossing near the same time." Hot Enough to Glow The tiny particles are not luminous from heat until they enter our higher air. Traveling at 33 miles per second in rela tion to the surface of the earth, they become hot enough by at mospheric friction to glow when at heights of 70 or 80 miles. Most of them are entirely burn ed by the time they get down to the 50-mile level. Every year large numbers of the membership of the American Meteor society observe and count the Perseid meteors. They are usually most numerous on the nights of August 10-13, but some may be seen earlier and later than this. Average indivi dual counts under good seeing conditions are about 70 per hour at the time of maximum. Some persons with good eyes and at high elevations have counted as many as 90 per hour. Can See Only Few H. A. Newton has calculated that one person with normal eyes can see only 17 of all the visible meteors that flash above the horizon. Larger groups are needed to watch the entire sky. Individual counts are what are wanted by the American Meteor society, of which Dr. C. P. Oli vier of the University of Penn sylvania is president. Dr. Olivier requests that large numbers of non-members join in the counting this year. The best counts will be obtained after midnight. A count of two hours at each sitting is suggested. Look any direction, but record it. Reclining Chair Suggested Very few meteors .will be seen if the observer walks around making only casual glances at the sky. A reclining chair in a dark place with the eyes con stantly "heavenward" will bring the best results.
