Guy Cordon, R-Ore., commended pri vate timberland ownership to day ore the 10th anniversary of ''tree farming'' in the western pine forests. Cordon addressed more than 1000 persons, including seven Eastern congressmen and scores of prominent western lumber men, during a woodland cere mony southeast of here on the "Weyerhaeuser Timber com pany's 500,000-acre tree farm at Keno. Hot in Public Interest He said that private woodland owner must have the opportu nity to hold and manage their properties. "It is not in the public inter est that all forest land be in pub lic ownership," Cordon said. "It Is not in the public interest even to have a preponderance of forest land in public owner ship. Yet there are some who feel only government ownership will solve our forestry problems. I know them to be wrong." The Weyerhaeuser tree farm was established a decade ago as the first in the 12-state western pine region. Farm History Traced A. J. Glassow, Bend, general manager of the Brooks-Scanlon Lumber company which oper ates a 146,000-acre tree farm, traced the history of western tree farming through its spread into 34 states and 3.697 such farms in the United States cov ering nearly 26,000,000 acres of private land. Oregon Traffic Deaths Increase Salem (U.R) Traffic deaths in Oregon climbed to 40 or more for the second consecutive month as incomplete reports listed an even 40 victims of fatal traffic accidents in July, accord ing to Secretary of State Earl T. Newbry. The death count in June was 41. July's toll brings fatalities for the year to 217, Newbry said, just 10 fewer than at the same time a year ago. The margin may be narrower if delayed re ports are received or if persons now listed as injured do not re cover. Last month's fatalities mark ed an increase of eight over the total for July of 1951. Heavy travel in August and September may set the stage for further in creases, Newbry warned.
