In twentieth century hospitals the expectant father is not only permitted but urged to remain with his wife as much of the time as possible, before, during and after birth of their baby. This is indeed the essential fea ture of rooming-in and natural childbirth, which has proved so successful wherever adopted. A superintendent of nurses or maybe of the hospital -said in an open letter to a midwestern pa per that "The doctors and nurses in the delivery room are far too busy to stop and take care of fainting husbands." Perhaps it was in her hospital or one close by that the husband was persuaded to go home (30 miles away) with the promise that they would call him when the time came. OFFICE OFIN SUNDAYS ONLY Friday, August 8, 1952 As We Live IT DOESN'T PAY TO BURN THE CANDLE AT BOTH ENDS One of the most serious mis takes many young people make is to do more than their health will -permit. The worst thing they do is to stay up late, losing sleep they need. The young boy who wrote the following letter is upset because his parents are' interfering with, his pleasures: (Q) "I am 15 years old. I have a problem with my par ents about what time I should -como home. I work all day. until 9 p.m. Then I have one day a week off. How lata should I be allowed io stay out the night I'm off? I would also like io know if I should be allowed to go fishing after work. Fishing may tako from 10 p.m. to midnight or 5 a.m." (A) How does it happen that a boy your age has such long work hours? According to the law of almost state, the num ber of hours a minor can work is limit ed. You are working far more than the , i jj. ' 'v limit. Are you I working for. a "Hji mm, i nimj relative or are you employed by an outsider? These long working hours not only overtax your strength for growth but they also deprive you of the fun you should have during summer vacation. Is it necesary for you to work so long to help support the family? If not, try to change your work ing hours to about half of what you are; now doing. Naturally you want .to fish but, if you work all day and through the evening, the only wise thing to do is to go to bed at once when your work is fin ished. Otherwise, you will be dangerously tired the next day. Late Hours Questionable Even oh your day off, it is questionable to stay out late. Remember you have a workday ahead and, if you get little rest the night before, you can't ex pect to do a g"ood job the fol lowing day. Your limit should be 9 or 10 p.m. on your day off. It is hard on you to have no for their benefit, not for the patient's benefit. Yet, a hack neyed argument of the old timers is that the mere presence of the husband in the delivery room or at his wife's side when the baby is born might infect the rigidly aseptic environment (haw-haw). That bit of malpractice just goes to show what may happen in lying-in institutions that cling to the nineteenth century system. Once again I recommend as a primer for every expectant father and mother Preparing for Maternity, booklet by Ol' Doc Brady, for which send 25c and stamped, self-addressed en velope. As required reading for the ex pectant mother I recommend Dr. Grantley Dick Read's famous book Childbirth Without Fear, published by Harper & Bros. For doctors and nurses not yet familiar with the. new obstetrics I recommend Briefs, published six times each year by Maternity Center Association, 654 Madison Ave., New York 21, N.
