SHC MEDFOHD (OREGON) Cheney Studs Eye 20th Triumph; Play Globetrotters Here Tonight Seeking their 20th win of the seasoifand their ninth in a row, the Medford Cheney Studs will be host tonight to the ever-popu lar showmen of the sports world, the famed Harlem Globetrotters. Game time at the fairgrounds will be 8 p.m. " Besides their antics that amuse the crowd, the handpick ed 'Trotters reportedly play t top brand of baseball and the Studs anticipate one of their toughest hassles of the year. At least one new face is sched uled to appear in the Cheney line-up. Charlie Jandreau, Ash land athlete who has been play ing for Hilt in the Northern California loop, is ticketed for an infield post. Other infielders will be George Sanders, over from Crescent City, Cal., Jack Gordon and George Gitzen. Maddox Pitcher Slated for outfield berths are Don Fawcett, Snuffy Smith and Moose Blevins. Terry Maddox, the ex-Medford high school ace who recently drew praise from fars for his performance against Weed, Calif., at the fairgrounds, will pitch tonight. Maddox on that occasion fanned six con secutive batters. Frank Roelandt will catch. The Globetrotter line-up prob ably will be Slugger Slade catch ing; Lonme Davis, first base; Clarence Williams or Randolph Campbell, second base, Eugene White, third base, and Willie Lee Ivory, shortstop. Outfielders may be Theodore Dixon, Larry Cunningham and John Keene. The pitcher will be picked from a roster of eight men. Burning Desire Burning desire of the crack Globetrotter nine is to compile a record comparable to that of the world-famed basketball crew of the same name and manage ment. The baseballers have v an 531 games and lost 106 in five seasons for an .834 percentage. Record of the hoopmen over 25 years is .940. Being a counterpart to a re nowned team' in another sport is conducive to a winning base ball team. The baseballing 'Trot ters are hustlers and play hard baseball from the word go. Own er Abe Saperstein and Manager W. S. Welch have selected play ers with a will to win and with a possibility of developing into major leaguers. Satterfield Gets Nod Over Johns Chicago tfJ.R) Manager Ike .Bernstein was ready to shoot lor the moon Thursday with his light heavyweight battler, Bob Satterfield, a scrapper who has been knocked out eight times in 41 pro bouts. It came about simply because Satterfield threw caution away in the tenth round in the Chi cago stadium Wednesday night, began swarming with botch pun ches, and won a split decision over Harold Johnson of Phila delphia, ranked third in the line up of light heavyweights aiming for Joe Maxim's title. "Now we'd like to fight the winner of Joe Walcott - Rocky Marciano, Joey Maxim or Jake LaMotta," Bernstein said. "But we'll do whatever the IBC says." Cochell's single came in the extra sixth frame after Lanny Crow got on base on an error and Duke and Richie Condray on -safe blows. There were no outs at the time. Central Point shoved over the first run of the game in the first part of the sixth. Smith and Green walked and Allen singled to load' the bags and Lyman Stubbs hit to score Smith. Grants Passiwon the first half title and Central Point took sec and half laurels in regular sea son play. Main Phone 2-5487 Ez Charles, Rex Lay ne Take It Easy Ogden, Utah (U.R) Former heavyweight Champion Ezzard Charles and Utah's chunky Rex Layne took it easy Thursday, their training for Friday night's 10-round all-important fight in Ogden stadium complete They will weight in at noon Friday in the lobby of an Ogden hotel as the final preparation for their battle before 25,000 to 35,000 fans anticipated as the biggest sports turnout in Utah history. Promoter Ken Mayne said the gate already has topped $100,000. Charles said he was deter mined to win because he wants to get another step along on the comeback trail toward becoming the first heavyweight champion to regain the crown. Layne, who has had his ups and downs in a brief career, also was eager and. anxious to -Step up the ladder. Dempsey Reftr ( Jake Mintz, Charles' voluble co-manager, admitted that "if Ezzy should lose this one, he's through." Mintz added that Layne, "could lose and not be hurt much, he's young enough to come back." Referee and sole judge of the bout will be Jack Dempsey, most colorful heavyweight champion Of them all who got his fistic start while peddling papers in Salt Lake City years ago. Dempsey was asked by the Layne camp to watch for low blows. Dempsey said he would but "the fight isn't going to be stopped because of a small cut or a little blood." Racing Club Drivers Tied Ashland Dick Mills, Grants Fass, and Elmer Sisemore, Ash land, are tied with 116 each in the point standings among hard top drivers of the Southern Ore gon Race club. Mills, winner of last Satur day's main event, picked up 30 points to catch up with Sise more. The Ashlander got only 14th place in the main and fifth in the time trials to accumulate only 17 points last week-end. Kodat Ranks Third Bob Kodat, Medford, ranks third in point totals with 91. Satohel Paige thought he might go fish ing Thursday. In any case, he wasn't going to any morning practice. The aging right-hander of the St. Louis Browns admitted that he- was just 'plain tired' after his sensational 1-0, 12-inning vie tory over the Detroit Tigers Wednesday night, and Manager Marty Marion felt like giving him the day off. Mind Made Up Marion, in recent days, has ordered morning workouts for the Browns after a loss, and Paige, along with- his mates, was informed that it would continue prior to last night's game. I made up my mind that there wasn't gonna be no morning workout," Paige grinned. "I told Marty that I had 100 outs in my arm last night and I sure used them all up. I'm still tired." Judge DoesnTt Believe One-Legged Man's Story Oakland, Calif.ttJ.RJ Harry Short, charged with burglariz ing a tavern, told the judge he saw nothing unusual in his car rying a wrecking bar, a screw driver, a hacksaw and three blades, and a three-cornered file, "I have a wooden leg and I need these things to keep it in good walking order," he said. Midget Cars Romp Sunday The Southern Oregon Midget Racing association will stage a five-race 90-lap racing program at the Jackson County Sheriff's posse grounds on Sunday eve ning, August 10. Two Medford cars will be in the thick of the 16 to 18-car com petition. One is owned and driven by Bill Vielbig. The other is owned by Tuny Bullis and driven by Ben Spalding, veteran Grants Pass driver. Improving Track There will be a trophy dash, a match race, two twenty-lap semi-mains and a forty-lap main. Time trials are planned for 6 p.m. and the first race at 7 p.m. A special comedy attraction is being arranged. Work is under way to improve the track sur face and keep dust down. Top driver of the association now is Donny Hood. His car has a Drake engine built up from a Harley. The Pointers go to Grants Pass for a 9 o clock scrap with the Elks lodge team. It will be the first of two-out- of-three series. The second game will be on the Medford senior high turf at 8 p.m. Friday, third conflict, if necessary, will also be on the Medford diamond Central Point will go into to night's encounter a full strength, The club has a record of two wins and one loss in king's-x competition with Grants Pass The Pointers won 2 to 0 and 7 to 1 and Grants Pass' victory margin was 3 to 2. Collins To Hurl Vern Collins is scheduled to pitch for Central Point and Bob Smith for Grants Pass. There is one difference in ground rules at the Grants Pass and Medford fields. At Grants Pass players are permitted to wear spikes. On the Medford field spikes are forbidden. A 7:30 p.m. preliminary to the clash tonight will be a don key ball contest. . QUEENS WIN Portland (U.R) The Phoe nix, Ariz., Queens were two games up over the Lind Florists of Portland Thursday in a trans- Oregon series after drubbing the Rose City girls' softball , squad 7 to 0 last night before a crowd of 6000. The world champion Queens -oroved too tough for the Florists, despite the pitching of Betty Evans Grayson. Next game in the series is slated for Albany. NOT QUITE FRESH Memphis, Tenn. (U.R) A friend boasting to Mrs. Naomi Church of the "fresh" eggs she bought on a visit to the country opened the case to find a baby chick had hatched. same on the Yankees and trail ed them by only three, when they defeated the White Sox 7 to 1 after which Washineton trimmed New York 6 to 4. The Cubs defeated the Reds 5 to 3 as new Manager Hornsby found out it was lust as easy to blow eames in Cincinnati as with the St. Louis Browns. The Phils and Braves were rained out nf a nisht double-header, along with the Dodger-Giant single same. Paiee won his blank-blank duel with Vireil Trucks and Hal White when Bob Nieman hit a noD-sinele with the bases loaded in the 12th. He gave up seven hits in gaining his eighth victory. Paige survived a bases-loaded nnnp-out iam in the 10th when two runners were forced at the nlate and he struck out Connie Berry to retire the side. Past his prime and rather slow at 36, Big Jack is an important reason for San Diego's tenacity it its fight for the Pacific Coast league pennant. Bespectacled Graham has slapped 18 homers for the Padres this season. And he's batted in more than 70 runs. A give - all type of player, Jack took to wearing the skull protector . un der his cap after Portland's Red Adams beaned him out of Ac tion a few seasons ago. Make It Tough Along with fellow ex-Seals Jackie Tobin, Guy Fletcher and manager Lefty O'Doul, Graham has made it tough on San Fran cisco 18 times in 23 games this year. . Seven, or possibly more, en tries are expected from a local racing group. There will be two Klamath Falls racers and a sizable group from Yreka. The race program will de pend on the number of cars but the events - planned are four heat races, a trophy dash, a semi-main,- main romp and a special race. Bears Smother Victoria 25-4 By UNITED PRESS " Scores in the Western Inter national League are beginning to look more like basketball re sults than baseball tallies. In a slugging marathon Wed nesday night, Yakima hammer ed Victoria pitching for 27 hits to score an almost incredible 25-4 victory over the first-place Tyees. It was the worst defeat suf fered by a WIL team this sea son and was Yakima's revenge for a 17-14 . pasting handed the Bears the night before by Vic- tor;a. The Tyees used two pitchers, Ben Lorino and Ben Gunnar son, in a futile attempt to halt the Yakima slugfest. TO OPEN ZONE FINALS Montreal -K (U.R) The United States was expected to name Vic Seixas of Philadelphia and Herbie Flam of Los Angeles Thursday to play the opening two singles matches in the Amer ican Zone Dayis. Willie Luna, a slim southpaw, worked a six-hitter for his sec ond shutout over the San Fran ciscans. Doyle lade gave up seven hits in winning; John ny Lindell allowed five in los ing. Oakland squirted ahead of its contention by hammering Port land 8-3.. And Seattle bombarded Sacramento, 9-0, as Al Widmar worked a six-hitter. Graham singled home a run in the first frame. And his one bagger chased two more home in the fifth.
