BASEMENT Jap Prayers Observe Seve nth Ann i v e r sa ry Hiroshima Bombing Hiroshima (U.R) Some 2,000 Japaneses bowed their heads in a minute of silent pray er Wednesday, and then, at 8:15 turn., exactly . seven years after the first atom bomb used in war fell in Hiroshima, the city bells and sirens sounded. Five children' orphaned in the famous blast unveiled a memor ial monument as a British plane circled overhead dropping flow er wreaths in respect to the Hiro shima dead. Dead Estimate Differs '' Japanese filed into temples and shrine in this city to pray for. the thousands who died on Aug. 6, 1945. The Japanese in sist that more than 200,000 were killed in .the explosion and by its' after-effects. The American Garden Notes C. B. CORDY - County Extension Agent for Horticulture . . Lawn . weeds are one of the biggest annoyances of the home gardener. Dandelion and plan tain used to be the worst weeds in our lawns, but with the ad vent of'2,4-D they were easily controlled and are not nearly as prevalent as . they used to be. Crab grass and Bermuda grass are the worst offenders now, and while there are chemicals avail able for their control they do not work nearly as well as the 2,-D does on the broad-leaved wr;eds. . There is a good deal of con fusion between crab grass and Bermuda grass. In order to get control it is essential to know which one you have. The Ber muda grass is a fine-leaved grass very similar to our lawn grasses 'and it develops a heavy turf. Crab grass is an annual and while it has a grass leaf, it is a little broader and has a differ ent color from other lawn grass es. Both crab and Bermuda grass develop a 5-fingered seed head. Work on Crab Grass There are two chemicals on the market which are very good for crab grass control, but they are not good on Bermuda. One of these is potassium cyanate, and the other is an organic mer cury. Both of these can be pur chased at seed stores under a great variety of trade names. The cyanate is applied as a spray, whereas the mercury can be applied as a spray, whereas the mercury can be applied either as a spray or as a powder. If the material is to be sprayed on, it can be applied with a small 3-gallon sprayer, with a sprinkling can, or from a small bottle with a clothes sprinkling attachment. The sprinkling can is very simple-but is wasteful, and the materials are rather ex pensive. In any event, the direc tions, that come with the mater ials . should i be very closely followed. 1 Best results are obtained by treating the crab grass in the seedling stage. As it is now well beyond that stage it is necessary to increase' the ; concentration, and as a result the lawn grasses will be severely injured along with the crab grass. As the lawn grasses are perennial they will again sprout from the roots, and while they will look pretty bad for' several weeks, by fall they would be well recovered. The crab grass is an annual, so if seed formation .is prevented it can eventually be eliminated. As all the need does not germinate in one year it will take two or three years of treatment to bring it Under control. A careful wat ering and fertilization program should be followed at the same time in order to thicken up the stand of grass so that it can bet ter compete with the crab grass. estimate of the dead was 80,000. But the bombing of Hiroshima is not forgotten in the Japanese press. A special report printed in the Nippon Times Wednesday gave a graphic description of how a little girl was made to look "like a living corpse" in the explo sion. Another newspaper, referring to the government's recent plan for building up Japan's army, commented: "August 6th is the anniversary of the A-bomb. This is the one day on which the prime minister who favors the strengthening of. Japan's armed forces and the people should take time out for cool reflec tion." Other newspapers also men tioned the bombing, some of them just in passing. Chicago Racketeer Victim of Cancer, Wife Discloses Chicago (U.PJ Police have learned that Theodore Roe, slain policy racketeer, was dying of an incurable cancer, and had little fear of other underworld kingpins and their paid killers. One source said that Roe had known he was a marked man a target of gansters' guns and said he only hoped he would be able to "take one of them with me." Less Than Year to Live The murdered gambler's wife told police Tuesday that doctors had told her husband he had less than a year to live. She said he suffered frbm an abdominal cancer; . Counterfeiters Guilty; Released by Police Milan, Italy U.R) Bewild ered police released a band of counterfeiters Wednesday, even though the culprits admitted striking off a batch of bogus British golden sovereigns. Police could not hold the men because the coins contained the same amount of gold as the bona fide sovereigns. The counter feiters said they made a profit on the difference in the market quotation for gold ingots and coins. Eugene (U.R) Robert E. Josslin Scoffs At Primary Vote Portland (U.R) The Dem ocratic convention proved that President Truman was right sev eral months ago when he said that primaries are "eyewash" William L.
