Campbell of Waco gave this account of the head-on crash of two Greyhound buses near Waco Monday in which 28 per sons were known to have died. By M. H. CAMPBELL . As told to United Press . Waco, Tex. . (UJ3 We were called in about 4:30 a.m. The call said two Greyhound buses had a neaa-on collision ana were on fire, between here and Lorena, south of the circle on Temple highway. When I got there, some ambu lances had been 'there and al ready gone and hauled 15 or 20 survivors and bodies away. More Bodies Found We must have dug out 5 or 20 charred bodies from the wreckage. The ones we found were com pletely burned up. All the bodies were burned be yond recognition. You couldn't tell whether they were men, women or children. We found parts of dresses and ladies' handbags. We found some dogtags that belonged to the soldier boys and turned them over to a major who was out there. Fire Burned Out We couldn't do much about fighting fire it was all burned out. But a little neighboring city, Bellmeade, sent a water tank out there must have had about 400 gallons, of water in it. Its chief, Marvin Gilliam, led them in a good piece of work. They had a lot more water in their little wagon than we did. Every ambulance in Waco was at the scene. The buses hit head-on and were completely destroyed by the impact and the fire. One was coming over a slight incline into Waco and the other was meeting it. ' Met on Hill It looked like they just met right on the east side of the little hill on the incline. The bodies were just lying under scraps of clothes and on the tops of suitcases. We worked about three hours pulling out the dead from the debris. They picked up one end of the bus and we took the bodies out of that end. Then they pick ed up the other erfB and we worked there. We had no way of knowing whether there were any little children in the accident because we couldn't recognize them. But there were some very small bodies that we assumed were youngsters. It was the worst disaster I ever worked - on and I've been with the fire department 26 years. Oxypolygelatin Under Experiment Pasadena, Calif.
