4-H Club Arena Completed At Fairgrounds, Barn Begun Construction of the new 4-H club arena at the Jackson coun ty fairgrounds' is complete and work has started on the hog barn, according to Bill Bigham, county fair board member and 4-H leader. Completion of the barn and arena finishing work is expect ed before the week of August 19 when the four-day county 4-H show will be held. The main show arena will re place the old building which burned down on the same loca tion about a year ago, Bigham noted. The new structure is built of wood and will seat from 1,200 to 1,500 people. It features a trussed ceiling with no posts to obstruct the view from any part of the grandstand. Features Described The building is 120 feet long by 80 feet wide, featuring roof skylight ventilation and many windows above seats on both sides. Four entries are available into the building by large slid ing doors. The arena has yet to Lave a fence erected around it and the floor will be granite based with a sawdust and shav ings cover. A new hog and sheep barn is being constructed 30 feet away from the arena at the southeast end of the building. The build ing will have some 130 pens with hinged gates in a well-ventilated structure. During the show, two chutes will be put up between the barn and arena to facilitate quick entry and exit of the animals. The barn is 120 feet long by 60 feet wide. Both Cost $23,000 v Construction on the arena be gan June 1, according to Big ham, by the Farmer's Lumber and Construction "company which was the low bidder. R. G. (Bob) Fowler, board member, said that the cost of both the arena and new hog and sheep barn would be $23,000. The money for construction is avail able from the county's share of the state fair funds. Besides these two new build ings, the 4-H clubs will have three other barns in use for beef nd dairy animals, and a cafe teria and sleeping shed for club members. The construction and mainten ance of the buildings is under the supervision of the county fair board which includes Wal ter Leverette, chairman; Fowl er, secretary-treasurer; and Big ham, director. Texas Man Sentenced For Two Burglaries James Junior Crowell, Sudan Tex., was sentenced to four years, six months jn the Oregon State prison by Circuit Judge H. K. Hanna Friday. Crowell pleaded guilty to two burglaries in nonresidences, ac cording to Deputy District Attor ney Bob Dickey. . One of the most welcomed features of the building's construction is the trussed roof which does away with any posts obstructing the view. Ventilation Is provided through the roof and by numerous windows and four entrances, one on each side. Other buildings comprising the 4-H group are beef and dairy barns, a cafeteria and sleeping quarters. Baker Police Chief Quits Second Time Baker (U.R) Police Chief Fred R. Hunt of Baker said Saturday he had become a "pol itical issue" and was quitting the job for the second time in recent weeks. Hunt said his resignation would be effective Aug. 15 and was "merely the culmination" of a series of disputes between the city administration and the police department. "I am no longer chief of po lice, but a political issue," he said. The city council last June told Hunt to resign or be fired. That is in seat mates on buses, trains and planes. If some fellows have a vacant seat beside them they draw a beautiful brown eyed honey blonde for a seat mate or a blue-eyed shapely Swedish brunette. Not me though. I always get a talkative male bore, a big fat guy or a drunk sitting next to me. It's just fate I guess. Some cards were made in which pictures of Stalin, Lenin and Russian women were substi tuted for the kings and queens. But the Russian public wouldn't buy these cards. A black market in kings and queens cards de veloped. So now the regular playing cards, kings and queens and all are in use in Russia and approved by the regime. Our dog, very small in compari son, looked up at the Great Daneand it seemed as if he were "saying to her: "Don't be silly!" Nurses There is considerable room for improvement in the uni forms of hospital nurses. Some of the garments worn by nurses bear a strong resemblance to a potato sack. All branches of our armed services seeking to influ ence the enlistment of women make it a point to offer some thing especially glamorous in the way of a uniform. It might be less difficult to lure young women into the nursing profes sion if they could look forward to having a uniform packing plenty of glamour and male ap peal. Get It Right George M. Cohan was not born on the Fourth of July. That's what I stated. Now a Bostonian points out there is a tablet on the house where Cohan was born in Providence, R. I., naming his birth date as July 4th, 1878. The tablet is wrong. George M. Cohan was born on July 3rd, 1878, and there is a record of his birth and baptism at St. Joseph's Church in Provi dence. George's claim that he was born on the Fourth of July was just a publicity stunt to match his billing as "The Yan kee Doodle Comedian." Advice George Simenon, brilliant de tective story writer, who has 148 successful books to his credit, suggests that young writ ers read the novels of Dickens, Stevenson, Dostoievsky, Balzac and Daniel Defoe. Excellent ad vice, however, would 'add the Springfield Grants Property for Smelter Springfield (U.R) The city council here Friday night granted a 30-day option of 13.6 acres of city land to the Apex Smelting company of Chicago- Apex is one of the nation's major aluminum producers and has been looking for a site in the Pacific Northwest to build a light metals plant. The plant would use a new smelting process developed , at the U.S. Bureau of Mines exper imental station at Albany. Apex also holds on option on another 18-acre Springfield site but is not expected to act upon it because the new site has more advantages. Bell, Pacific Northwest regional administrator for the Bureau of Land Management, said Satur day the government realized a net profit of $3.20 for every dollar spent in the region during the 1951-52 fiscal year. The bureau, which adminis ters about 30,000,000 acres of range, forest and mineral lands in Oregon, Idaho and Washing ton, spent $2,976,364 during the year and collected $9,801,800.65. This, Bell said represents a net profit of $3.20 to the Northwest and the U. S. Treasury for every dollar at bureau cost. Revenues includes grazing $339,294.17; minerals $139,673. 16; timber sales $9,293,213.99, and miscellaneous $29,618.73. Bell said if the full amount had been collected for the 415, 833,000 board feet of stumpage sold from O & C lands and the 39,000,000 board feet from pub lic domain lands, timber sale returns alone would have been more than $10,500,000. How ever, the uncollected timber sale funds will be .collected during the current fiscal year, Bell said. The", average selling price for all species of timber on O & C lands was $21.65 a thousand board feet.
