Ironically, second-place Oak land has failed to take advan tage of the Seals' unexpected success. The Oaks dropped their third in a row to Los Angeles, 4-1. Cadres Advanc Third-place San Diego, how ever, has been more opportun istic. The Pads, won their third in a row from Sacramento, 5-2, and advanced to within 4! games of Hollywood's lead and 3V4 games of the runnerAip Oaks. Portland's Red Adams lost a shutout in the ninth but man- San Francisco (U.R) With all the privacy of a politician in caucus, the San Francisco Seals are beating the pants off the league leading Hollywood Stars. Manager Tom Heath's unpre dictable band gave lumps to Hollywood for the third straight time Thursday night, but only 853 came out to watch. . It was the largest crowd of the series. Throngs of about 550 flocked to each of the Seals' first two wins from the Stars. Win 9 of 17 Heath's seventh-place lads have won nine of 17 games played against Hollywood. " Wife of Brown Catcher Killed in Auo Crash Gunnison, Colo. (U.R) Mrs. H. W. Porter, 18-year-old wife of the St. Louis Browns' newly acquired catcher and outfielder was one of four persons killed in an auto crash near here Thursday. Porter, who reportedly was paid a bonus of $65,000 when he signed with the Chicago White Sox, was part of the recent trade that brought Jim Rivera and Darrell Johnson to the Sox. Medford Bowlers Discuss Program For Coming Year At a meeting held last night at the Medford Bowling lanes, members of the Classic league voted to bowl the coming year under a handicap arrangement. A team limit was set at 860 pins with handicap computed individ ually on- of 190. For several years the league has bowled on a scratch basis with the teams set up at the start of the year as near evenly as possible by averages maintained the previous year. This year the members felt that in order to equalize the teams without working a hardship on any in dividual or team it would be necessary, to go back to handi cap bowling for at least one year. Necessary changes in rules to govern the league in handicap bowling were made and the starting date of this season's league play was set at 7 p.m. on Monday, August 18, to run for 35 weeks with a two-week lay off during the Christmas and New Year's holiday. Tax on Gamblers Losing Punch; Most Fail To Purchase New Stamp Washington (U.R) Internal Revenue officials said Friday the new tax on gamblers has lost its punch and business in the gam bling world is picking up. A United Press survey of ma jor cities indicated most of the nation's bookies, punchboard operators and numbers racket eers had not bothered to register for new federal gambling tax stamps by the deadline last mid night. Poor Showing 'Lamentable' In Washington, a high tax of ficial called the poor showing "lamentable." Six months ago, the same of ficial said the law requiring gam blers to come out in the open and buy a $50-a-year stamp and pay a 10 per cent tax on all bets handled had cut gambling opera tions to the bone. Friday he said the "small timers are resuming operations, some 'under cover and others right out in the open. Arrests have increased, he noted, and the number of horse race "scratch sheets" for sale on stands has grown. Drop in Stamp Sales Throughout the nation, local tax officials reported a sharp drop in tax stamp sales. Last year's stamps expired with the -tax year on June 30, and last midnight was the deadline for renewing them. Third and fourth degree work will be put on at next regular Grange meeting August 5. GUARDSMEN WIN National Guard defeated YMCA, 13 to 5, in a Medford Softball league game played here last night. Dick Phillips was the winning pitcher for the Guardsmen in the seven inning contest. A substance known to scien sists as . CVP (citrus flavonoid compound), derived from the pulp and rinds of lemons and oranges, is cited by Dr. Boris Sokoloff, prominent bio-chemist of the U. S. Vitamin Corpora tion, as a new hope in aiding x ray treatment of cancer. Officials were surprised when only 42 New York City gamblers registered with the tax bureau and bought tax stamps last year. This year their number is down to three. In San Francisco, 90 stamps were sold last year and only nine this year. More than 3,000 Illinois gamblers bought stamps last year, but less than 150 have signed up this time, and none in the Chicago area. Said Forced Out Top officials in San Francisco and Chicago--as well as several other cities claimed the slump in sales shows gamblers have been forced out of business. It's not the money, it's the "spotlight, they explained. Many gamblers have landed behind bars shortly after admitting their true colors to the tax collector, and others may have learned from their ex ample. But Chief " Magistrate John Murtagh of New York agreed with Washington officials, who think gamblers are no longer afraid of the law and have de cided to go it illegally. Three Factors Blamed The Washington official blamed the law's failure to knock out gambling on three factors: Congress didn't provide enough money to enforce it; lo cal police often fail to get enough evidence on an arrested gambler to enable prosecution for viola tion of the federal law; and ar rested gamblers can get off the hook by buying a tax stamp even after they have been apprehended.
