A young el ectronics genius named Mac Brainard s p e c i 1 izes in making fantas tic gadgets for movie stars Aline Mosey . and other gadget-minded citizens. In one Brentwood mansion, for example, the lady of the house doesn't have to worry about the sun fading her furni ture. When the sun hits a huge pic ture window, the drapes auto matically close. After the sun moves on, the drapes grandly open again, all by themselves. Brainard installed an electric eye that does the work. Method Demonstrated "She always takes her friends outside at night and shines a flashlight on the eye to show how the drapes work," he grins. Brainard has installed buttons in automobiles by which you can turn on the yard lights, open the garage gate and start the phonograph when you're 20 miles from home. One businessman can push a button in his home and open the garage door. Another but ton pushed, and his car starts, backs out of the garage and stops in front of the walk! "It's done by a little motor that starts the car and drops the ' fluid drive shift into reverse. A timing device turns it all off after the car has gone 150 feet," explains Brainard. Music Under Water . One producer ordered music under water. The electronics wizard installed a special metal loudspeaker in the swimming pool so music can be heard clear ly under water, but not outside the pool. Brainard whose customers in clude Clark Gable and Donald O'Connor, made one movie ex ecutive's jcar steal-proof. If the car is driven a half block without first turning off a "burglar alarm," the brakes lock, lights flash on and the horn sounds. Dial different numbers and you can start the coffee maker, open the front door for the dog and turn on the radio. In one Brainard-serviced in dustrial plant, you can't enter the electronically-controlled door to a restricted room without first- whistling a certain tune. He has several customers who can turn on a light in their liv ing rooms by Waving a hand in front of a wall. Comedian Lou Costello had Mac design a secret room for his home. "There's a photograph of Lou on the wall," says Brain ard. "You put your finger on the nose in the picture and the secret door behind a bookcase swings open." Director CHIROPRACTIC-PHYSICIAN four bouts of it in the past ten years, from the arsenical spray residues I have eaten on celery, lettuce and other leaves and per haps some fruits that have been sprayed with lead arsenate or perhaps paris green especially in a dry season. Loss of appetite, nausea, belly ache (and I mean belly) and per haps some diarrhea are the usual manifestations of mild arsenic poisoning, when one gets a little more than one can handle. A sure cure I have fund, is simple enough: eschew green salads and fruits or berries for a week or so. Some poor geeks, unaware that such symptms warrant the suspicion of arsenic poisoning, keep right on eating arsenic and among the symptoms they de velop eventually are recurring eczema; a peculiar waxy pallor; red infected eyelid linings and in some cases swollen or puffy eye lids; onion or garlic odor of the breath, skin or sweat; puzzling tingling or numbness in legs or arms; sometimes actual "neuritis. In some instances chronic ar senic poisoning has been respon sible for such peculiar conditions as erythromelalgia keep your shirt on, we'll interpret it pres ently and idiopathis peripheral vasoconstriction. I'm sorry about these ten dollar words, folks, but there they are or perhaps I should say there are the mangled remains of them laid out in the style to which the typographer is accustomed. Eyrythro (red) mel (?) algia (ache or pain) was invented be fore this column, so you can't blame me for it. I merely notice it as we amble along and kick it around just for the fun of it. At that, I'm letting you off easy the correct word is erythromegal algia one up on Webster, al though Webster does mention that megalo is a combination form meaning big, large or great. For instance, megalomania is unreasonable conviction of one's own importance or great- ! ness; and acromegalic pertains to j extremely large limbs or feet. The other sesquipedalism well, it would take too long to go over it again, but a medical i term for it is Raynaud's disease, which was first described by Maurice Raynaud, a French phy sician, about 80 years ago, as local asphyxia and sTrrmetrical gangrene. A more familiar term for it, in mild cases, is "dead fingers'' or "dead toes." If you happen to have either big red ache or dead fingers or dead toes, do not infer that the troubje is necessarily a manifes tation of chronic arsenic poison ing in most instances of either condition the cause is unknown and I mention the fact that ar senic seems to be responsible in some instances only to show how obscure and mystifying mild arsenic poisoning may be.
