For Housekeeping New York U.R) The fact that mamma holds an outside job doesn't mean that mamma's a haphazard cook. A leading home economist says that our standards of house keeping and cooking are the highest in history, despite the fact that a record number of women, close to 20.000,000, hold outside jobs. The home economist is Ellen Ann Dunham, director of con sumer service for General Foods, who was one of the speak ers at the recent annual confer ence of gas appliance manufac turers. Miss Dunham said some of the credit for the high standards goes to the women themselves for their ever-increasing interest in food; part goes to better equipment and some goes to the packaged and frozen foods now available. Work Already Dona "Food processors are doing most of the work our grand mothers had to do themselves," she said. The home economist added that in the early 1930's there were just three frozen proces sors in the nation. Today there are more than 1,000. "A survey shows," she con tinued, "that today's housewife each year uses more than 1,100 kinds of food packages, includ ing the frozen foods and prepar ed mixes. "More than half the cakes baked today are made from packaged mixes." Beth Bailey McLean, home economist for Swift and Co., told the manufacturers that the soaring cost of living was caus ing a revolution in women's shopping habits. "We used to urge the home maker to plan her meals before she went shopping," Miss Mc Lean said. "Now, we tell her to first check the -specials at the meat and grocery counter and then plan the menus." Kitchen Glamorised Russel Wright, designer, told the conference that women now are eivinff as much attention to decorating the kitchen as the rest of the house. The housewife wants the kit chen to be more than just a food preparation center," he said. "She wants it to be a part of the day-to-day homelife, with more than scullery functions." Dr. William Smith Jr., profes sor of family relationships at Pennsylvania State College, saw kitchens changing because more husbands are helping in them. With more wives working, he explained, "more husbands and children are sharing in kitchen duties; That is all to the good, because the teamwork is helping to build warm and en during family relationships. These are the days when everyone wants to be out in the open as much as possible. To have leisure time requires planning ahead of time. A little forethought in marketing will save many a last minute rush when an oppor tunity for a day's pleasure presents itself. An assortment of tinned and jarred foods on your pantry shelves can afford a delightful quick meal or a picnic lunch at short notice, and save many long hours of preparation. Five O'CIock Cooler, 2 cups tea infusion 1 Vi cups grapefruit juice, sweetened 14 cup mint jelly green food coloring Vi cup sugar pale dry ginger ale fresh mint Pour hot tea over jelly and sugar; stir until dissolved. Add grapefruit juice and coloring; chill. Divide among 8 tall glasses. Add ice cold ginger ale. Stir gently to mix. Top each with a spray of mint. Oregon Legionnaires Open KF Convention Klamath Falls, (U.R) Gov. Douglas McKay of Oregon and National Commander Donald Wilson of the American Legion are scheduled as principal speak er at the Sunday afternoon ses sion of the Oregon American Legion convention. The convention runs through Wednesday and about 2000 dele gates are expected to be regis tered by the time the main busi ness starts Sunday. Friday and Saturday were de voted to sessions of the auxiliar ies and fun groups of the Legion. Wilson Is from Clarksburg, W. Va. Hollis Hull of Albany, state commander, is to preside over the business sessions. The convention is the largest here since 1949, and two hotels, the Veterans Memorial hall, ar mory, Sacred Heart auditorium and the high school auditorium have been taken over for hous ing facilities. St. Helen's Man Dies At New York Airport New York (U.R) Max Oberdorfer, 72, president of tye St. Helens Pulp and Paper com pany, St. Helens, Ore., died of a heart attack at Idlewild air port here Saturday. Oberdorfer was identifed as president of the St. Helen's Pulp and Paper company. He col lapsed at Idlewild airport just as he cleared customs after leav ing the plane.
