Methodists Welcome New Minister, Wife At Church Reception One of the events of the past week was the reception held in the First Methodist church on Wednesday evening to welcome the Rev. Hardwick W. Harsh man, the new pastor, and Mrs. Harshman. Parlors of the church were decorated with baskets of sum mer flowers which had been ar ranged by Mrs. J. S. Heathering ton. Mrs. Everett Faber was re sponsible for the refreshment table decorations. A table foun tain surrounded by purple tapers and purple and white petunias formed the center arrangement. Mrs. William Neal was at the punch bowl and Mrs. Floyd Jen kins served cake. During the program hour, Charles Adamson, lay leader of the church, presided. Those who welcomed the Rev. and Mrs. Harshman in behalf of the several church departments were Mr. Adamson, F. S. Newman, Mrs. Jessie Minear and George Goodman. The Rev. and Mrs. Harshman then expressed appre ciation to all for the welcome given to them. Mrs. Charles Adamson pre sented the musical number which included a mixed quartet from the church choir. Presenting the quartet numbers were Mrs. How ard Bush, Mrs. Frank Elaar, H. S. Daniels and William W. Wil son. Mrs. Archie Pierce sang two solo selections, "My House on the Top of a Hill" and "By the Bend of the River." Dr. J. S. Heather Ington sang a comedy number. Members of the Woman's So ciety of Christian Service were In charge of reception arrange ments. Church Group Announces Officers, Chairmen Officers and committee chair man for Circle 9 of the First Methodist church were announc ed recently during a picnic at the home of Mrs. Eva Van Aus- dall. Fifteen members and one visitor attended. Mrs. H. R. Walker is the new chairman and Mrs. Van Ausdall Is vice-chairman. Mrs. Pearl Sigler Is treasurer; Mrs. C. C. Ferris, secretary; Mrs. Grace Pankey, sunshine chairman, and Mrs. Eva Low, membership chairman. The next meeting will be August 19 at the home of Mrs. Matilda Dietrich. Sandwiches made in advance may be wrapped in a damp cloth and placed in the gas re frigerator until time to use. The double ring ceremony was read by the Rev. D. K. West. About 75 guests attended the wedding and the reception which also was held at the church. Pink gladiolus decorated the church and the wedding music was furnished by Gordon How ard, Roseburg, accompanied by Mrs. Eva Marsh. The bride is a granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Martin H. Ebright, Alhambra, Calif., announce the engegement of their daughter, Miss Barbara Ebright, to Vernon D. Varenhorst, son of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Varenhorst, Hillsboro, Ore. Dr. Ebright was the former pastor of Zion Lutheran church, Medford. The bride- elect graduated from St. Olaf college, North field, Minn., and received her M. A. degree at Syracuse uni versity, Syracuse N. Y. She will be on the personnel staff of the University of Redlands, Red- lands, Calif., this year. Mr. Varenhorst is a graduate of Pacific university, F o re s t Grove, Ore., and obtained his M. S. degree at Stanford univer sity. He is now with the General Electric company. The wedding will be an event of June, 1953. . Miss Adele Davis, Noted Nutritionist, To Be Here Thursday Members of the Living Foods group and others interested in nutrition will be interested to learn that Miss Adele Davis, Pa- los Verdes Estates, Calif., nu tritionist, author and lecturer. will be in Medford July 31. Miss Davis will speak at 8 p. m. in the YMCA. Tickets are being sold by members of the Rogue River chapter of the American Acad emy of Applied Nutrition of the Living Foods group. Tickets al so will be available at the time of the lecture. Miss Davis, in private life Mrs. George Leisey, the mother of two children, will speak at 2:30 p. m.f July 30, at Grants Pass in the VFW hall at Fourth and L streets. Numerous out-of-town persons are expected to attend her lec tures. Included are Dr. and Mrs. L. .M- Masemore and friends from Olympia, Wash.; Mrs. Ed Burroughs, formerly of Grants Pass, now of Eugene, and Mrs. Frank Buck. Several Crescent City persons also intend to at tend the. lectures. The speaker has studied nutri tion extensively and holds both bachelor of arts and a master's degree on this subject. She has written numerous books concern ing nutrition, including a cook book. The Living Foods group was able to secure Miss Davis at this time because of her interest in gladioli. She also will attend the Gladiolus festival in Grants Pass. The group sent Miss Davis about 1000 gladiolus bulbs last spring. z To Picnic The Rogue chapter of the Grandmothers' club will, meet for a picnic Thursday, July 27, at 6:30 p. m., in Hawthorne park. Husbands of the members will be guests. Those attending are to take a potluck picnic dish and table service. Simp- land, is the son of H. V. son, Portland. The bride was given in mar- 1 riage by Mr. Tucker. She wore a street length dress of silver grey sheer silk. Her flowers were a bouquet of pink orchids with stephanotis and her head piece was a net cap trimmed with stephanotis. She wore a gold cross which had belonged to the bridegroom's mother, the late Mrs. Simpson. Miss Jane Simpson, sister of the bridegroom, was maid of honor and the only attendant She also wore a silver grey silk street length dress and carried a nosegay of baby pink roses. Her headpiece also was of net and stephanotis. Ushers were xCash Perrlne, Ashland; Robert Chamberlin, Eugene; Cece Daniel, Eugene; and Peter Moe, Roseburg. During the reception Miss Peggy Boyce, San Francisco, cut the wedding cake and Mrs. Robert Chamberlin was in charge of the guest book while Miss Dixie McCullouch presided at the punch bowl. Out-of-town guests included Mrs. Georgette Manthey, Port land; Mr. and Mrs. B. B. Boyce, Prineville, with their daughter, Miss Boyce of San Francisco, aunt, uncle and cousin of the bridegroom; Mr. and Mrs. Charles Daley, Portland, cousins of the bridegroom; Mr. and Mrs. Arthur W. Priauld, and Mr. and Mrs. Emmett Stoddard, all of Portland; Mrs. Ida V. Donovan, the bride's aunt from Chattan ooga, Tenn. Robert Metz, Oregon City; Frank Johnson, Portland; Don Zdroy, Eugene; Charles Plum mer, Roseburg, and Payson Wolsey, Lowell. The couple returned July 21 from a wedding trip to San Francisco and after August 1 will live at 1332 Lawrence street, Eugene. The bride attended Medford Senior high school. The bride groom is an Ashland high school graduate and Is a student at the University of Oregon where he is a member of the Delta Upsilon fraternity. The couple will live at Eugene where the bridegroom is a student at the University of Oregon. The bride is a granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. Martin H. McCul lough, 707 West Clark street, an nounce the engagement of their daughter. Miss . Donna Gayel McCullough, to Robert C. DeVol, son of Mrs. Clarice DeVol and Perry DeVol, both of Medford. Miss McCullough and her fi ance are graduates of Medford high school and she later at tended Oregon State college where she was a pledge of Al pha Phi sorority. Mr. DeVol was a student at Southern Ore gon college. The bride-elect is now an em ployee of the Jackson County federal savings and loan asso ciation. Mr. DeVol is employed by Davis Transfer and Storage company. They plan a September wed ding. A two-foot strip of wall will hold a hinged snack bar which folds against it when not in use. It's a handy hide-away eating place. Morion Helen Mongrain, Ray C. Tippan Wed at Methodist Church Rites An eight o'clock evening cere mony July 17 at the Methodist church wed Mrs. Marian Helen Mongrain and Ray C. Tippan. both of Medford. The Rev. Hard wick W. Harshman officiated. Mr. and Mrs. Jack Cleeves, Cen tral Point, attended the couple. The bride's suit was blue and she wore a starched lace hat. Her corsage was of white flow ers. Mrs. Cleeves also wore a suit, in a tan shade, with con trasting accessories. A reception was held at the home of Mrs. Ruth Meusel. Vari colored asters decorated the rooms. The bride and bride groom cut the wedding cake. The bride is the only daughter of the late A. R. Chandler, and Mrs. Chandler of Fortuna, Calif. The bridegroom is a longtime resident of this area. The couple will live at the home of friends at 3835 Crater Lake highway until their own home, now being built, is completed.
