(International Soundphoto) Malaya Rubber Shipments To Russians Encouraged To Halt Economic Slump Singapore (U.R) Britain should allow Malaya to export rubber to Red China and Russia to prevent a slump in this coun try, the general council of the Singapore Labor party contends. A resolution passed by the council said: "The only remedy to the sud den and persistent drop in the price of rubber lies in an extend ed market. - "So far we have restricted our rubber exports to North At 1 a n t i c Treaty Organization countries for political and mili tary reasons, which is in viola tion of even capitalist principles of free trade. "By denying one - half of the world an essential commodity like rubber, we are in actual fact starving ourselves. This policy has resulted in America obtaining a monopoly position in the buying of rubber, which coupled with her ability to pro duce synthetic rubber, reacts adversely to the interests of rubber - producing countries." See Serious Results The resolution warned that if this state of affairs was allowed to go on unchecked "the econom ic repercussions, besides the pol itical and industrial unrest in Canadian Rats Pied Piper's' Edmonton, Alta. (U.R) The Alberta government's "pied piper of St. Boniface" halted the main vanguard of an invasion force of Saskatchewan rats but his defenses are being infiltrated and out-flanked. N. L. Poulin, an imported pest control authority from St. Bon iface, Man., "rat proofed" 40 farms close to the inter-provincial border. He planned to lay a poison blanket across a 12 mile strip of country straddling the main invasion route west. Alberta's envied reputation as the only rat-free Canadian prov ince bit the dust as hundreds of brown Norway rats started to desert Saskatchewan. Blue Poison Used In a bid to stem scrambling hordes, the Alberta government hired its special "pied piper,"' who uses a mysterious new weapon of war that he guaran tees will give rodents the blues. The blue poison was spread in a grain-saving effort on both sides of Sibbaid, Alta., the main bastion against the invaders. W. A. Lobal, supervisor of crop protection, said if the in vasion were not halted, millions of dollars of grain would be de stroyed by the rats in years to come. He said the poison, which is effective from six months to two years, was believed to be eliminating the pests. Defenses Breached Then from Red Deer, 160 miles northwest of Sibbaid, came a re- TO BUY SELL OR TRADE CARS - PICKUPS & PANEL TRUCKS Be Sure to See ROOTS MOTOR CO. 101 West Jackson at Fir MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE SEVEN the country will be very ser- i ious. The recent price drop below one Malayan dollar a pound had rocked the country badly and union as well as employers' as sociations have warned against the danger of Communism mak ing inroads in this unstable ec onomic situation. Union leaders said further drops in the price of rubber will affect the earnings of nearly 300,000 rubber workers and drive them into the arms of the Communists. Britain Opposed Union leaders have clamored for an end of destinational con trol imposed by the United Kingdom government to prevent strategic war material from go ing to Red China soon after she joined the Korean war. Before the imposition of the control, Red China was a regular purchaser of Malayan rubber through its buying agents in Singapore annd Hong Kong. Rubber men are confident that with the lifting of destina tional control and the entry of Red China again as one of the principal purchasers of Malayan rubber, the price of this Malay an commodity will be firmly stabilized despite American ef forts to bring it down. Outflanking Poison Line port that Alebrta's defenses had been turned. The district pest control offi cer, Vic Bjorkeland, announced discovery of the first Norway rat ever spotted in central Al berta. It was a dead rat. Bjorkeland said that where one dead rat was found, there were sure to be a score of healthy and hungry ones in the vicinity. With the rats chewing holes in Alberta's hopes and defenses, Lobal brought out his battle maps to consider setting up a second line of defense. Between the two lines he ' promised to wage a bitter "no-bites-or-bait-barred" war and re pulse the rat invasion. Narcotic Seekers Pick Poison During Burglary Houston, Tex. (U.R) Burglars who broke into C. E. White's pharmacy probably meted out their own punishment. They sought narcotics and did pick up a small quantity of a mild barbit urate. White said the burglars missed the strong barbiturates and instead picked out several nearby boxes of poison in the dark. VACATION TRAVELOANS Use the Traveloan plan for your vaca tion cash.
