TWO MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Wednesday, July 23, 1952 Mormons Pick Site For First Temple of Church in Europe Glasgow (U.R) David Mc Kay, 78, president of the Church of the Latter Day Saints, an nounced Tuesday he had obtain ed a site at Berne, Switzerland for the first European temple of the Mormon church. McKay made the announce ment at end of a seven weeks tour of nine European count ries where he visited 10 differ ent Mormon missions. Many European Member! McKay said the church had 40,000 of its world membership of 1,370.000 in Europe and of that number half live in Switzer land and Germany. "Full details of the costs and plans for the building will be I discussed later," he said "but the site has been secured at Berne and further negotiations are under way." He said the. temple would serve the entire European area and would become the sacred house in Europe where the sac red ordnances are administered to the faithful. Leaves for Stales McKay announced the de cision shortly before he left Glas gow for Prestwick airport where he planned to board a Scandinavian air services plane for New York. Registrations will be accepted at the pool in the mornings Wednesday ; through Saturday Seven years is the minimum age The lessons will be given Mon day through Friday for two weeks. An intermediate class will be held for those who recently completed the first class, but emphasis will be placed on be ginners' classes. Western Delegates Taking New Counts As Balloting Hears Chicago 0J.R) The chair men of eight delegations from Western states were taking new polls of their groups at the Democratic convention Wednes day, but they admitted the re sults may mean nothing by Thursday. Preliminary nose- counting among the 160 delegates showed only a couple of votes for Gov Adlai Stevenson. If the Illinois governor s band-wagon keeps rolling, the chairmen said, he may get 100 or more by the second or third convention ballot. Polls Could Be Upset The polls also could be upset by a rumored alliance between Sen. Estes Kefauver and mutual security administrator Averell Harriman. Kefauver has 90 nledeed votes in California and Oregon, and he and Harriman have scattered votes in other delegations. The preliminary polls, outside the pledge California and Ore gort groups, gave these results: Utah Harriman, 6V2; Sen Robert S. Kerr, 2; Sen. Richard R Russell. 2: Kefauver, 1, un committed, V2. Idaho Harriman, 5: Kefau ver, 5; Kerr, 2. Nevada Russell, 7 12, Steven son, 1; Kefauver, Vr, Harriman, V2. Arizona Kefauver, 1; Ste- Local Adventists Honored at Camp Meet in Portland Several members of the Med ford and Valley View Seventh day Adventist churches were given special recognition for outstanding service during the Adventist camp meeting near Portland. . Honored in a Saturday eve ning laymen's service were Elsie Arnold, Gladys and Frank Arn old, B. F. Blank, E. R. and Fern Brainerd, Evelyn Burns, Ray and Amelia Chamberlin, Elaine and Dick Christensen, W. J. Cline, Mr. and Mrs. William C. Gray, Mr. and Mrs. Dewey Pen rod, Leona and Knox Quirling, Wesley Riley, Dorothy and Al vin Siemson, Bertha Work and Frank and Myrtle Archer. To Honor Others There were other Medford persons scheduled for honors, but they were not present at the meeting and will receive rec ognition later. Offerings for the first Sabbath were $21,173, according to R. T. Emery, secretary and treasurer of the Oregon conference. There are 15,000 attending the camp meeting. A blood mobile unit operating on the grounds received over 200 pints of blood from the camp ers. Pastor O. E. Schnepper, Mel vin Tompkins and Lyle Corn forth, all of Medford, were among the donors. venson. 1; uncommitted, 10. California Waits Word The California delegation waited for word from Kefauver on the reported Harriman merg er. Chairman George Miller Jr., said he was "certain" that Ke fauver would be in the top spot if a coalition is formed. An Oregon delegate said that Stevenson would be "very ac ceptable" to that group if Ke fauver fades after the first bal lot. Idaho was struggling under a unit rule to get an agreement on one candidate in spite of the even break given by 10 of the 12 delegates between Harriman and Kefauver. Nevada Votes to Scatter A Nevada source said that delegation's votes would scatter among several candidates if Russell is through. One Mon tana delegate was working for first ballot votes for Stevenson, although the delegation has. an informal agreement to vote ini tially for Sen. James E. Mur ray as a favorite son. The Washington and Arizona chairmen said- they had taken no formal polls of their delega tions up to Tuesday and were only estimating the strength of the candidates. 24 Communicable Disease Cases Here Twenty-four cases of com municable disease were report ed to the county health office last week, according to Dr. A. Erin Merkel, county health of ficer. Included were four cases of chicken pox, nine cases of Ger man measles, three cases of pneumonia, one of septic sore throat (a Grants Pass patient treated here), one of infectious conjunctivitis, one scarlet fever (in Jacksonville), two of Vin cents angina, one of strep throat, and one of an undetermined type of meningitis, in Medford. Dr. Merkel relayed to physi cians of the county instructions from State' Health Officer Har old M. Erickson that all cases of poliomyelitis are to be reported within 24 hours. There were nine cases in the state for the week ending July 5, and seven in the week ending July 12, Dr. Erickson said. No residents of Jackson county have come down with polio yet this year.
