FOUR MEDFORD (OREGON) Estey, Hughes in Final; Extra Club Portland (U.R) Ben Hughes and Dick Estey fought it out Saturday for the Portland city golf championship at Eastmore- land. Mrs. Naomi Kidd faced Mrs. Richard Grubbs in the women's division. Mrs. Kidd entered the Women's Golf Activities Mrs. William J. Miller, Rogue Valley Country club, has been named general chairman of the women's division of the South ern Oregon Golf championship tournament over the Labor Day holiday week-end. Others on the committee will be Mrs. Harvey Woods. Mrs. Merle Russell, and Mrs. Art Nelson, all of Ashland, and Mrs. F. G. Bunch, Mrs. W. L. Stark and Mrs. H. E. Nulton, all of Medford. Play August 29, 30 and 31 in the women's meet will be at Oak Grove Golf club in Ashland and the September 1 finals will be at the Rogue Valley Country club here. Two teams knotted Thursday in women's two-ball foursome play at Rogue Valley with 38 rets. They were Mrs. Tom Cul bertson Jr., and Mrs. Ken Teet er and Mrs. Ray Larson and Miss Isobel Stuart. Spec play is planned next week starting at 8 a.m. with pairings at the tee. Mrs. Richard Finch has been named vice chairman and pub licity manager of the Rogue Val ley Women's Golf association, replacing Mrs. James Wyatt who has moved to San Mateo, Calif. Junior girls over nine years of age who have had or are hav ing golf lessons are invited for special play at 9 a.m. Monday at Rogue Valley course. The women's association will super vise. Willamette Valley - Southern Oregon Golf association team play is set for July 30 at Bend. Women filing post entries from Rogue Valley are instructed to contact. Mrs. Charles Barnes. Women will have course priv ileges on July 29 and a barbe cue dinner and entertainment are planned that evening. Women golfers of Redding, Calif., and Oak Knoll course, Ashland, have been invited to play here on August 7. Stars Defeat Padres, 11-2 Hollywood (U.R) The Hol lywood Stars continued their phenomenal winning streak ov er the San Diego Padres Satur day by trouncing the Southern ers 11 to 2 in a Pacific Coast league game. Hollywood Hurler Mel Queen went the distance to hold the Pads to four hits while his mates sparked by Frank Kelleher and Irv Dusak, sent the Twinks to their 11th straight win over San Diego. The determined Padres, fight ing to overtake second place Oakland, played a nip and tuck game during the first three stan zas and took the lead in the fourth inning when Jack Tobin singled and Herb Gorman smashed a homer over the right field fence. The Padres' loss, nevertheless did not endanger their third place rung in the PCL since Seattle, next in line, trailed by more than four games. Hollywood countered in the next frame when Frank Kelleh er opened with a home run. A triple by Dusak and singles by Dick Cole, Mel Queen and Monte Basgall gave the Stars a total of four runs off five hits in the inning. Jul? 20, 1952 Negotiators Again Try for Settlement Of Maritime Strike San Francisco (U.R) Point negotiations in the nearly e.ight-weeks-old Pacific Coast Mari time strike were resumed Sat urday with Federal Conciliator Omar Hoskins presiding. Friday's session between rep resentatives of the AFL Sailor's Union of the Pacific and the Pacific Maritime Association was recessed "to give both sides a little more time to prepare possible compromises," Hoskins said. Compromist Proposals Hoskins reports that both fac tions have submitted compro mise proposals in the lengthy bargaining sessions, but could not seem to agree to anything at the same time. The SUP has asked for an 11 per cent pay increase, overtime pay for Saturday work at sea, and 13 other benefits. Harry Lundeberg, SUP sec retary, rejected a package deal by the shipowners which would have established a contract to run until Sept. 30, 1953. The proposal would also have chang ed the amount of time the Sail ors Union must give for a con tract termination from 15 to 60 days. On one side is the Association of Petroleum Refiners, represent ing a group of companies which reprocess used oil. It claims we are wasting 12,000,000 barrels of oil a year by not refining old oil for passenger cars. Opposing Side On the other side, there's the National Petroleum Association, spokesman for the major oil re fineries. It says the refiners are trying to sell a product that's often inferior to fresh oil. There are certain facts about re-using oil that no one ques tions. For example, the Air Force has been buying refined lubri cating oil for years and finds it perfectly satisfactory. Also, gov ernment tests have shown that oil never really wears out. If properly cleaned with all ac cumulated waste and dirt remov ed, it can be used again and again. The Air Force is just one customer of "laundered", oil. So are several big airlines. So are many railroads. Argument on Private Cars The argument is whether re fined oil also is good for private automobiles. Those who sell it claim it's as good or even better for Thefts fie lane. Ogden police said ser ial numbers of the dental equip ment matched those of supplies reported stolen in Ogden. Safe Cracking Jobs The Ogden authorities said the Frosts also were suspected or a number of safe-cracking jods in Utah, Idaho and Wyoming. Frost has served terms in the Oregon and Washinston state prisons for burglary and police saia ne has a long criminal record. Among the dental supplies seized were 72 opium tablets and several hypodermic needles which detectives said smelled strongly of morphine. COURT NO BARROOM Providence, R. The major oil companies have no argument with trucks and air lines and railroads which use re fined oil. But they point out this oil is carefully saved by the transportation company itself, picked up under contract with a refiner and undergoes a scien tific cleaning process before it's used again. It's an entirely different mat ter, say the big oil firms, when it comes to oil used by passenger cars. Here the refiner must get his supplies from gas stations and garages which are not sub ject to careful storing. May Be Contaminated It's too easy, the oil companies say, for drained crankcase oil to become contaminated with transmission lubricants, chassis grease and other waste products that accumulate around a ga rage. It can be reclaimed, but only through a careful and lengthy process. The National Petroleum Asso ciation says such refining is ex pensive, and it believes too many refiners cut corners in cleaning used oil. It also points out that many new model cars equipped with hydraulic valve lifts which require oil containing a deter gent. The petroleum association says refining takes out the de tergent and that a lot of refiners don't bother putting it back in. While the major oil companies concede you might be able to buy reclaimed oil that's as good as new, the chances for hitting an inferior product are much greater. (U.R) Western Reserve University has solved the problem of where to file col lege theses. The graduate school tomes, which cover subjects of all sorts, have gathered dust in library shelves many years, only occasionally to be perused. Now Reserve has microfilmed many of the papers and hopes to file the more than 2000 works in a fraction of the space. Financial panics in America have occurred in 1837, 1873, 1893, and 1929. Merchants Pay $44,538 For Over Celling Sales Portland (U.R) Oregon mer chants paid 544,538 during the first half of July in settlements for sales above ceiling prices. Willis West, enforcement offi cer for the Portland district of the Office of Price Stabilization, said all the payments to the U.S. Treasury for violation of price laws were "single settlements," or payment of the amount of overcharge without damages. OPS did not release the names of the violators since the over charges were committed before May 1, Violations and names of violators will be published in all cases occurring after May 1, West announced. Force has admitted that people Speedy Rocket Plane actually see "something" when they report flying saucers and said some of the unexplainable objects traveling at speeds up to 2,000 miles per hour have been tracked by radar. Capt. E. J. Ruppelt, head of "Operation Bluebook," the Air Fore group studying reports of unidentified aerial objects, said ground radar had tracked son aerial objects at speeds ranging between 1.500 and 2.0C0 miles plane, a sawmill, combines, trac tors, jeeps and automatic wea pons. Tiie party will establish a model farm on a 500.000-acre tract leased by Letourneau from the government of Liberia. Na tives will be taught Christian ity and modern agriculture. The ship will be loaded with hardt wood timber for return to Am erica. Yages of City Officials Up 75 Per Cent Frcm'5i Chicago (U.R) Present sal aries of most city officials aver age five to 15 per cent higher than in 1951. A survey by the International City Managers' Association showed that the median salary for mayors in non-council-manager cities of 50,000 to 100,000 population increased $1,000. It was increased from $6,000 to $7,000. The average salaries of city managers in three population classes below 25,000 and in the 250,000 to 500.000 group in creased an average of eight per cent in each, the survey said, while the increase in the three groups between 25,000 and 250, 000 was five per cent or less. Pay raises were recorded for rank and file city employes gen erally. Of 58 cities surveyed, the association said 83 per cent made service-wide wage increas es since Jan. 1, 1951, while an other five per cent boosted the pay of certain employe groups. A test pilot disclosed Thurs- day that a rocket-powered Navy Skyrocket fighter plane attained a speed of 1.238 miles per hour at El Segundo, Calif. It was the fastest man ' has ever been known to fly. Ruppelt said jet fighters equipped with the very latest radar have been sent aloft to "make contact" with the phan tom objects, but all efforts to catch up with them have failed. Of 1.000 investigated reports, Ruppelt said. 38 per cent were meteors or other heavenly bod ies. 13 per cent balloons, 22 per cent birds or aircraft. 2 per cent hoaxes, and 25 per cent unex plained.
