EIGHT MEDFORD (OREGON) MAIL TRIBUNE Wednesday, July 16, 1952 Davids Thrash Studs 8 to 3; Havana Cubans Here on Friday Their language may seem strange but the Havana Cubans reportedly will play Daserjau as it should be played on Friday night when they take on the Medfcrd Cheney Studs at the fairgrounds ball parK nere. It will be the second fray of the week for the Studs against a barnstorming crew. Game time is set for 8 o'clock. Fans, according to the ad vance raves, will get a big kick out of the Cubans, for, when a fray gets good and hot, they start jabbering in Spanish. Signals in Spanish Also, instead of using tricky signals to instruct runners and batters, the Cubans come right out and yell the instructions. But there is a catch. They do it in Spanish. Sponsor Ben Cheney and Manager Hoosier Hoffard of the Studs will have to have Spanish dictionaries to keep pace with the colored visitors. The Cubans play ball too. They are fast and are good field ers. They have good throwing arms and when they have good pitching fans get to see some fancy throwing and fielding. House of David has met the Cubans a number of times. The Davids strategy in opposing the Cubans has been to "hit 'em where they ain't." Clarence Mellbye is slated to chuck for the Studs on Friday. A hard - slugging House of David baseball nine, whammed out 13 hits and capitalized on six Stud errors to thump the Medford Cheney Studs 8 to 3 at the fairgrounds ball park Tuesday night. Showing more strength than the club they fielded here last summer, the Davids cracked most of their hits for extra bas es. They swatted seven doubles and one triple. Homer Garner headed the bearded gang with two doubles and a triple. As the Davids were having a big evening at the plate off the offerings of pitcher Marty Hume, Hurler Bob Bell held the Studs to seven well scattered hits, no more than one an inning except for two singles in the ninth. Terry Maddox got the only Med ford base blow, a three-bagger. Davids Take Lead The bewiskered crew took the lead in the first inning with two runs on doubles by Frank "Williams and Alec Ballis and a single by Garner. Snuffy Smith in center field made a nifty knee- high catch of a fly ball to pre vent further trouble for Med-ford. In the second the Studs caught up at 2 to 2. George Sanders, Crescent City resident playing shortstop for Medford, got on base on a walk. He scored on Maddox's triple and Maddox tal lied when Bell made a bad throw to first base trying to pick off Don Fawcett who had walked. In the fourth frame the Dav ids went ahead 4 to 2 on a pair of runs produced on a single by Ballis, a double by Bob Mit chell and two errors. The edge went to 5 to 2 in the seventh when Bill Brady walked and Garner two-baggered him home. Bags Loaded Medford loaded the bags in its batting turn in the seventh. Roelandt singled, Smith walked and Fawcett was hit by a pitch. Roelandt crossed home on Bell's miff of a rap by Ned Landers. The Studs had previously load ed the bags in the fifth inning but Smith was thrown out at- Medfo: rTRIBUNB Camp White Knots for Loop Lead In Softball; EP Girls Winners Camp "White gained a first place tie with Mobilgas in the men's league and Eagle Point tightened hold on second spot in the girls' loop in Medford Softball tussles last night. Camp White blanked the Eagle Point men 7 to 0 for its fourth win against one loss and the Eagle Point gals downed Butte Falls 17 to 8. Ray Singler pitched a three1 Walt Dropo Ties Record Washington (U.R) A helpless Walt Dropo stood in the batter's box and prayed but his prayers went unanswered, he sadly ad mitted Wednesday. The broad-shouldered Detroit first sacker, who tied an all- time major league record, by rapping out his 12th consecutive base hit in Tuesday nights sec ond game against Washington, wanted that 13th hit badly. "I felt I could get it, too," he said. "Why not? I was hitting the ball real well." Foul Caught He picked on Lou Sleater's first pitch in the seventh inning and raised a foul near the first base stands. "I just stood there and prayed that the ball would fall into the stands," he sighed. "I watched it all the way and my heart sank when Mickey Grasso, Washing ton catcher squeezed it for the out." Before Grasso made the catch, Dropo tied the record for 12 straight hits established by Frank (Pinky) Higgins of the Red Sox on June 19 and 21, 1938. one of Bell's pitches got by Catcher George Anderson. That retired the side. The Davids got another two markers in the eighth on two basers by Frank Cerillo and Mitchell and an error. Their fi nal run was in the ninth on a double by Garner and single by Bell. Line-Up Differs Medford's line-up was some what different from the usual with Sanders at shortstop, Mad dox in right field, Fawcett at second base, Tom O'Donnel at third and Landers relieving George Gitzen at first base in the sixth stanza. Pitcher Marty Hume and O'Donnell, are both from Sac ramento Junior college. They have seen previous action with the Studs but were making their Medford debut. It was a rough night for both. The Camp Whiters got only five hits themselves off Eagle Point's Lewis but the Eagle Point throw er issued seven walks and heaved three wild pitches. Biggest in ning for Camp White was the fourth when three runs scored on three walks, an error, a wild pitch and a hit by Singler. Ten In Sixth The Eagle Point women un leashed a 10-run barrage in the sixth inning to bounce Butte Falls. Bigham got two raps in the canto and Hickson, Hoffman, Ballard and Jackson each, one. It was a close fray until the big eruption. The score was 6 to 6 at the end of five innings. In games tonight National Guard and Crater Lions vie at 7:30 o'clock and Andy's Jewel ers meet Mobilgas. The Crater Babes and Eagle Point girls play at 7:30 p. m. Thursday and" the Central Point men tangle with YMCA. Leads All Way Miss DeMoss lead all the way to end the match after 13 holes. Another winner in first round play was J. C.
