City Council Acts To Finance Airport The city council last night took action to encourage the speedy letting of additional bond issues to pay for the expense of the new terminal being built at the municipal airport, during the council meeting atcity hall. Councilman Dwight Hough ton called for an immediate check of the finances and ex penses of the $135,039 terminal. Because Contractor Frank R Fairweather has agreed to com plete the construction in 90 days and because it takes so long to let bids, Houghton said, we might have the job finished and then not be able to pay for it if we don't watch the finances pretty closely." City Superintendent Robert Duff said that additional bonds will almost certainly prove nee essary despite a $50,000 govern ment grant that has been applied for. The council also voted to share in the expense of installation of 12th street traffic lights with the State Highway commission. The city's share is expected to be $2,850. Another important matter was the approval of the plans for remodeling of the former scnool offices on the main floor of city hall. The engineering and build ing departments will be moved into the office "space when the remodeling is completed. Coun cilman Elmer Childers, of the building committee, said the job can be done within the city bud get for this year. After approving the plans the council authorized, the superin tendent's office to call for cost estimates. None were false alarms. The department went to seven dwelling fires and answered a call to an apartment house that resulted from a short circuit in the fire alarm system. Three of the dwelling fires were caused by electric appli ances or wiring. Two were caused by an overheated oil stove and a stove too close to a wall. Ten grass or trash fires were put out by the department and it flushed away eight gasoline spills. There also were two car fires and a standby at the air port for an emergency landing at the airport, during June. The fire marshal reported that 566 homes were inspected under the department's new home inspection program. At the 916 homes called on, only 70 refused inspection. There was no one home at 280 of the homes visited. The marshal made 49 other inspections and 79 issued orders or recommendations on the re moval of hazards. There were 310 burning permits' issued. iTacticauy every alley m town was found to be lined with rubbish or a high growth of grass, weeds or brush. Own ers of the property along these alleys claimed that the city should be required to clean the growth from the alley right-of- way before they be forced to clean up the rubbish and dis pose of the fire hazard. State Forest Patrol Controls Small Fire A small fire on the highway between Trail and Shady .Cove was controlled Tuesday eve ning by the state forest patrol. Fifteen state men and several residents of the area helped ex tinguish the brush fire. The fire was stopped before it got larger than three acres, according to the forest patrol. A crew was left there to patrol it. The fire was apparently started J by a cigarette thrown from the highway, it was reported.
