The Oregonian Not long ago, a university professor crawled through the gullet of a dead sperm whale to prove that there was elbow room. Yes sir, you can believe that story about Jonah. A whale, and they grow to 70 tons can swallow a man. gulp down an octopus, an enor mous squid or an eight or ten foot shark. Perhaps it's harder to believe that the proof, if such is needed, can be found smack in the mid dle of California's fabulous Red wood Empire. Hold on. there on the coast, I mean. Look at the map. Fields Landing is an unpre tentious little fishing village a turn off the Redwood highway, little more than a stone's throw from Eureka, county seat .of HumDoiat county which boasts bu per cent of the world s stand ing redwood timber. It's an often-bvDassed town and rightly 'so, when compared to northern California's two coastal giants Eureka and Crescent City. It's on your high way map, but not in a home- sized atlas. But IT IS reportedly the only active whaling station on con tinental USA, and the age-old whaling business is not dead by a long snot. Two Whalers Used Fielsd Landing is a friendlv town that thrives on its fishing fleet but shows an unfriendly attitude to whales. That was the opinion of ex-Portlander Bud Newton, 41, at least. He captains one or the two government licensed whaling ships out of the Landing. His 136-foot Lynn Anne, a converted war surplus sub pa troller, was idle, slapping at the dock, when our white Ore gon State Motor association's Areata .... Eureka The coast highway in north ern California is being im proved, and one new stretch near Orick has been built along a sand spit, almost at sea level. Time was, only a year back, when the Lynn Anne harpooned the 16-ton sperms, finbacks and humpbacks right offshore. Any where from 10 to 40 miles out. Captain Newton said. But the oldtime Norwegian muzzle-loading harpoon gun, and her quiver of six-foot spears, have grown rusty on the Lynn Anne's restless bow. The captain scraped a gnarled hand downward across his leathery chin and tried to explain. "The price for whales isn't right just now," he volunteered, but cynically. But another whaler, foreman of the Maritime Industries Re duction plant where they used to unload the big whales, cut mem up and boa them down into the hieh-auality oil. had an other explanation. Folks hereabout, he told this inquisitive motorlogger, just didn't take to the smell of whale. They re kind of un friendly about it, he said. The Lynn Anne and her brother whaler, the Dennis Gayle, put out occasionally to sea champing for the hail of "Dar she blows." but not like they did a few years back when the catch was 100 or more of the gigantic mammals a season. Ihe plant owners. Gilbert (Gib) Hunter, 34 who hailed originally from Waldpori and Herman Foland. 39. formerly of Depoe Bay, are making plans to move the plant elsewhere. But there's no move in the immediate offing. State Has Many Trees ' Practically everv kind of tree that grows north of the tropics is found in California, but none so magnificent as the redwoods. Stretching both north and south of Eureka on Humboldt bay, whose 23,000 rjorjulation and lumbering wealth make her chief port between' San Fran cisco and the Columbia river. are the fabulous giant redwoods. Rogue River Rogue River Major and Mrs. Cortland Gilmore of Gar den Grove, Calif., and two friends, Thad Dickenson and Teddy Light, were guests of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Hughes last week. Mr. and Mrs. Chris Leyen, Kansas City, Mo., left Friday after a few days visit with the John Leyen family here. They will go from here to Iowa to visit relatives before returning to their home. Janice Elliott, niece of Mrs. C. C. Cooper is spending the summer at the Cooper home on West Evans road. She is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George Elliott of Lynwood, who recently visited here. Mrs. Hoffman, an employee of the Herald Express is spending her vacation here. Mr. and Mrs. Roy Stouder, Goshen, Ind., are spending a week at the C. E: Willis home on Cedar street. Stouder is a brother of Mrs. Willis. The volunteer firemen made a "dry run" to the Glen Black ranch on West Evans road one day last week and reported the fire was in Black's frying pan and Glen had taken it out into the yard by the time they ar rived. Mrs. Black stated the ut ensil containing grease was left on the electric stove while the Wednesday. July 16. 1952 The most famous stand of all in the 22,000-acre Humboldt Redwoods state park, is just 40 miles south of Eureka. The tall est tree in the world (how they ever measured it the traveler wonders) is there 364 feet high. Highway 101 the Redwood highway winds through this incredible forest like a humble invader. The 20th century man, the highway builder, had to go around the centuries-old sacred giants instead of cutting them down. Man brought his machines into the redwoods nevertheless. Deep inland, away from the highway's edge, the whirr of the chain saws fills the motorist's ears. Redwood logging for all its majestic endurance the redwood (sequoia sempervirens) is a soft wood has been going full scale for ten years. Elk Protected Six miles north of Orick, in the 9100-acre Prairie Creek Redwoods state park, live the last remaining herd of native Roosevelt elk in the country. They graze (and multiply) safe from the hunter's gun. Californians take good and deservedly tender care of their Redwood highway. All of the 100-odd miles our AAA car traversed after crossing the Ore gon border is newly surfaced. Something new, apparently a concession to the curve critic, is a straight new three-mile stretch beyond Orick. It erases some tiresome bends in the road, cut ting across a sandspit down at the ocean's edge. The Pacific ocean laps one side, and a paradox a warm lake lagoon without a ripple on the other. Just north of Eureka lies Ar eata, onetime terminus for tne rich Trinity mine country. The wildly beautiful Trinity river is followed eastward by high way 299 across the state from here. It's the front door to Califor nia's legendary gold country. family was outdoors. Britain's sec ond Queen Elizabeth is 'criti cized by her subjects for only one thing. They're afraid she's working too hard. "She's young, and she and Philip should go with the young er generation more.. Mrs. An thony Mullen, a housewife from Cheshire, said as she stood in front of Buckingham Palace to watch the changing of the guard. "We'd like it if they'd brighten up the place a bit." Worried About Burdens In the House of Commons the members of Parliament are wor ried about the heavy burdens 26-year-old Queen Elizabeth as sumed so uncomplainingly. Besides cutting down the number of public appearances required of the monarch, the M. P.'s have even brought up the . possibility of moving the royal family from "the white elephant" Buckingham Palace which is antiquated and high ly inconvenient. Such a move, however, is unlikely. This fatherly concern shown the young Queen is just one ex- ample of the devotion of the subjects. Devotion lo Duty "She has the same devotion to duty her father had," explained one British businessman. "She has everything she needs to make her a beloved ruler."
